Quinton Byfield disgusting goal

...no, Wright was playing sound defense; Byfield grabbed Wright's stick and did his General Grievous move...pretty goal, shouldn't have counted...
I don't really disagree in theory, he basically has 2 sticks in his hand, but it's not a call that a ref will ever make really. To get a stick holding call you basically have to pull it out of their hands or have the guy keep trying to pull it away while you aren't letting it go.

So many hooking calls are where a guy grabs the other guy's stick with him arm and falls down. To be fair, the stick was there, so it's the defender's fault for that.

If your stick is lodged somewhere you’re not gonna be able to use it yes. Glad that’s out of the way
Was it a pathetic effort by wright? Yes but irrelevant

Got it, so if someone grabs your stick, you just stop playing....it's not irelevant, he didn't lose an advantage, he never had the advantage because he never engaged,

Thats like asking officials to call every cross check in the corner.....

Once it was ripped out his hands and pulled behind Byfield, there really wasn't much he could do.

I think at first he didn't realize that Byfield had a hold of a his stick as they glided towards the net. Or if he did, he was probably okay with it, assuming Byfield would have to eventually let go to play the puck if it were to come near them (what's he gonna do, score one handed?). Instead, Byfield goes into god mode, makes a great play with one hand, and never releases Wright's stick.

I agree with this, so how is it a penalty in the NHL? So Wright was ok with everything that happened, not realizing what was going to happen, had he shown an ounce of grit there, maybe that garners a call, but you aren't getting a penalty on a non-effort, non-engaged play,

Again, like asking officials to call every single stick stap as a slash or cross check

It was probably fine until he literally ripped the stick out of Wright's hand.

I don’t expect every holding play to get called and they shouldn’t. But something as egregious as pulling it up parallel to the ice and holding it until the puck crossed the line is too far for me. Agree to disagree on this one

Yeah. And Wright was just lazily keeping his hand on it. Not jostling for position or trying to yank it back.

He was either being soft or trying to get a call by not fighting for it. I certainly see the argument for disallowing it, but even if driven by homerism, I'm glad the creativity was rewarded more than Wright limp-wristing his stick.

So he reached down after the faceoff and pulled it up? Holy f***......are you shitting me?

Show me where please.

He pulled the stick out of one of wrights hand and pulled it parallel to the ice above wrights shoulder. Why are you getting so mad?

Not mad, amused as hell, incredulous even, tell me again how he pulled it up parallel to the ice, without reaching down when it wasn't parallel to the ice

You are right, so is cross checking, and slashing, though they let those go at an alarming rate,

Again, THAT situation is not a penalty.....no advantage gained.

I've seen some dumb shit argued on this site but "Byfield wasn't Holding the Stick" takes it to a new level:biglaugh:

Still an amazing goal regardless, I'm actually glad it counted.

Yea I have no problem with it being counted because it was an amazing individual effort, it's just tarnished by that one thing...

Which is why this GOTY stuff is absurd to me.

Unless your argument is that the rulebook should be called verbatim where every two handed cross check is called so you have to expand game rosters to 50 players, that situation simply isn't called in the NHL.
Not that, I just thought saying to one of the more sophisticated Oilers fan on this board “you can’t read” was a bit uncalled for

I never said he reached Down. do you know what parallel to the ice means?

You said this "But something as egregious as pulling it up parallel to the ice" so in order to pull something UP to Parallel to the ice, where does he have to reach or are you arguing that Wright was holding his stick far above his head?
