hughes has been compared to makar for each of the last 6 seasons. one season hughes had a better year and now canuck fans want to act like hughes and makar are now equals. nope, come back with another major award or two to even have that conversation.

What is the discussion though? If we're talking about better player, Hughes has taken over since last year every so slightly. Looking at their careers, it's definitely Makar.

Arguments change over time because their careers aren't over yet. That's not the goalposts moving, it's player stats changing in real time. Also, goaltending doesn't affect possession stats, nobody is out here bringing up +/-.

Did you think maybe Cale has suffered because the avalanche goaltending has been epically bad? His offense sure seems better then hughes

Don't you think its possible that the goal tending looks bad because the defense in front of him is bad? AV fans sure sound a lot like Oiler fans right now.

The Canucks' Vezina finalist goaltender has been injured since May and played 0 games since then.

I don't hear them complaining about goaltending hurting Hughes despite playing a rookie and a goaltender making the vet minimum for the past 7 months.

I did think about that!

It doesn't though, Makar's possession stats are unaffected by actual goals against. As for offense, yeah he's better than Hughes, but Hughes is miles better defensively.

Makar also suffers both offensively and defensively when MacKinnon isn't on the ice, like below 40% in the major stats, while Hughes controls play at an elite level regardless of his linemates.
