Makar looks damn dominant with the puck in the ozone. Some mistakes and bad coverage in his own end sadly no goalie to bail him out though. Easily better than 2023 Makar in term of impact. Him and Mack are absolutely carrying the Avs so far. I haven't followed Hughes so far this year.

Hughes has continued to dominate Makar in every possession stat while Makar has continued to struggle when separated from MacKinnon.

...This may be one of the more moronic post I've seen around here in a while, congratulations!

Oh wait, it's an Avs fan. Lmao.
It’s just a few loud ones
I’ve seen it go both ways from both fan bases

How so?

Makar has been a Norris finalist for 4 straight years, unless he gets injured it will be the 5th this season. PPG+ regular season and playoffs. Calder, Norris, Smythe and a cup.

Quinn Hughes cannot compete with that atm

Brother have you taken a peek at Makar's numbers without MacKinnon? They're not pretty, most metrics have Hughes on another level defensively relative to Makar. He's not the same player in his own end as he was the first couple of years in the league. Not sure what the Calder has to do with today, he won the Norris 3 seasons ago, Conn Smythe/cup is a reflection of an elite team (And again, Makar was insanely good during those playoffs, but I don't see the same player in his own end today as he was back then and not sure why).

Quinn Hughes is the reigning Norris trophy winner. Cale Makar is also a special player, but it's more of a 1a/1b situation than different levels, and based off last season and this season, Hughes is 1a right now.

So 1 Norris and a Calder nomination from Hughes swings it all in his favor? I'm not buing it, recency bias at its best. Their accomplishements are clearly not equal.

Makar is considered the best Dman in hockey by most and for a good reason. Could this change? Sure, but looking at their NHL careers so far how is it not Makar.

Because we're not comparing them over the courses of their career, we're comparing them as hockey players today. It's not a slight against Makar to suggest he's 1b to Hughes' 1a, nor would it be a slight to Hughes to suggest he's 1b to Makar's 1a. Now what's stupid is to say one of these 2 are clearly better/on different tiers.

Judging these two players based on one season only is highly questionable and conveniently looks to be the only real argument that you can make for Hughes.

I guess MacKinnon is better than McDavid then, just only look at recent regular season results. That would seem to follow your thought process here.

McDavid finished with essentially the same ppg, was hurt with something that was initially being said required surgery + still had elite metrics (unlike Makar), and then had that playoff run - that's the difference.

Either way, at this point we clearly agree to disagree. Nothing is going to change your homer stance.

Would you have said Matthews was better than MacKinnon prior to last season? MacKinnon had 1 Calder trophy up until 29.

MacKinnon had three Hart finalist nominations before last season + he was top 10 all-time in playoff PPG, an area that Matthews seems to have trouble with. So the answer has to be MacKinnon, even most rankings agreed with that take.

By the end of this season Hughes will have been better than Makar for 50% of his NHL career.

And Hughes is on pace to earn the first unanimous Norris in decades.

Curious to see people's take on this poll now. Makar absolutely lighting up the stat sheet and Quinn looks like a top 3 skater in the league in terms of impact.
Think the poll is fair considering the question. Although they may have been close and the poll being up for discussion at the time when it was posted, Hughes would go on and win the Norris and firmly plant himself in the group of dmen than are just below Makar (and I would say has a good argument to be leading this group).
Given what has happened to start the season, Makar is once again just showing why he is widely considered the best dman in the NHL
