Player Discussion Quinn Hughes, Pt. VII

I really hope he skips the 4 Nations tournament.

He's still got that brace on his hand.

Obviously he's not 100% healthy.

We need him 101% healthy if we're going to make the playoffs.

I hope he decides to sit out, or the team has a conversation with him about skipping it.

Two weeks of rest is a ton of time for a professional athlete and he could really benefit from it.

Doubt he would miss the first best on best tournament in 8 years. Could be the only meaningful games he plays all year.

Quinn Hughes is having the best offensive season since Paul Coffee 30 years ago.

Funny how everyone on that list "of the last 30 years" is from the last 5 years. Hmmmm makes you think.
I think it's impressive. While things have opened up the last few seasons guys like Coffey were playing at a time when you tried to simply outscore the opposition and goaltenders by and large were absolutely terrible.

Well those cap numbers will change many things, but not Quinn's desire to play with his brothers and close to home.
If the Canucks offer 18 mil for 8 years in this tax environment and NJD offer 18 mil for 7 years is it enough to make playing with his brothers and winning or playing for two or three cups secondary?

Another consideration is the Canadian buck as income vs paying in US dollars. I think some people will have forgot what it used to be like before the cap.

Just because you imagined him saying it, doesn't mean Quinn has any desire to go play in new jersey.

All teams are paid in USD too. So his money would go farther in Canada.

I know but I think calling hughes season this year the best offensive seasons by a dman in the past 30 years is a bit...ya know. Certainly a great season but I think it looks alot better than it is because of the era.

From a purely offensive standpoint, Karlsson's season in San Jose two years ago was incredible. 69 ES points on a team that finished 25th in goals scored, and he did it at age 32.

EDIT: Oops, I read it wrong. It was actually 74 ES points, not 69. Even more amazing.

74 ES points and managed to finish with a -26.

That has to be one of the most extreme seasons ever. I think the analytics had him as 100% percentile for ES offence and 0% percentile for ES defense.

Never known for defensive prowess, although the Sharks were outscored by 87 goals and all of their top guys carried big minuses that season. Offensively, it's the 7th highest ES points total ever by a defenceman. The only two players with higher seasonal totals were: Orr, the greatest offensive defenceman; and Coffey who was one of the greatest offensive defencemen, who played on the highest scoring teams ever in the highest scoring era with Gretzky as a teammate. And they were in their 20's. He finished only 3 ES points behind the leading forward (Mackinnon) and was 25 ES points ahead of the next defenceman (Vince Dunn).

What exactly do you think the era 30years ago was like...?

You know...

The era where Brett Hull did this:
88-90 80gp 72g
90-91 78gp 86g
91-92 73gp 70g

88-90 80gp 72g
90-91 78gp 86g

The list the guy posted dated back to 30 years ago, aka 1995 and forward. Where offense dropped off. The brett hull era was over.

95-96 was high scoring because of a huge number of PPs. This was also the case the first two years after the full lockout. Outside of those years, the current era is easily the highest scoring in the last 30 years. Also, league wide scoring doesn’t affect all players evenly. Unlike those other seasons, the league is higher scoring today not because of more PPs but because ES scoring has gone up as the game has opened up, particularly in terms of defensemen carrying the puck, and PP efficiency has increased with the reduction of goalie equipment. This has made it a much better environment for players like Hughes and Makar to succeed than any time since the early 90s.

That said, Hughes’ year is certainly up there, but Karlsson’s ‘16 where he was tied for 4th in league scoring and his 101 point year with San Jose where he was 4th in ES points on a terrible team were probably better from a purely offensive perspective, though not overall.

It looks worse than it was though because his minuses were solely from shorthanded goals against when he was on the PP and from empty net situations. He was a net 0 at 5v5 despite the team being hugely in the negatives with him off the ice
