It’s been a rough year all around for goalies.

JQ deserves criticism, but he also deserves respect.

Guy is the best goalie LA has ever had and got the fan base 2 cups.

Last year he was in a bit of a resurgence that helped the Kings into the playoffs.

The thing I miss the most right now is that feeling of comfort having him in net. It has evaporated and I feel for the guy.

Goalies always have a symbiotic relationship with their teams. Good goaltending is a key component to success. Quick still is a warrior but he is what 38? He has always been a reflex guy that depended on really good systems and defenders.

This is not all on JQ. Yes he needs to be better. Yes Copley is saving their bacon just playing a calm sound game.

I hope Quick can turn it around here and I expect this is his last season in LA.

Just asking for some of us to show him earned respect in the socials. Disgusted by some of the comments I’ve been seeing. I know it comes from passionate fans but I don’t want to see him go out with a fan base turning on him.

For me, it’s not so much anger about the goals being let in & disdain for the man, as much as it is a twinge of sadness.

It’s incredibly difficult for me to watch the best goalie in kings history, one of the greatest American goalies of all time, and possibly the most hard assed competitor from the cup teams just sorta… go out with a whimper.

Love quickie, love what he is and what he has done, but this is just flat out difficult to watch.

I honestly still have some hope. He seems to a little uncomfortable in the crease. Playing too far back. I still think he can be a serviceable back up this year. So many times he has been money in big games too. Nice to have that in your back pocket. I think this is one of the weaker defenses he has ever had to stopgap tho which doesn’t mesh with his style. Sad when you long for Olli Maatta on the left side.

Personally, I’m as certain as I can be (as a non-medical professional with a small drinking hobby) that his body is legitimately not feeling the same as it has, and it’s killing his ability to play agressive, and that’s always been his meal ticket.

Not to be negative here, but body language and playing style both are pointing to the guy just not having anything left in the tank.

Like I said, it makes me sadder than anything else.

If anyone can battle back it is Quick, but it does look like he is about done. Though that same competitiveness and stubbornness might come back to him seeking to hold on. In the end, he is in the final 5 months of his contract and won't be waived or traded. The only thing that can be done is to play out the rest of the year and hope that he has the wherewithal to bow out and retire gracefully like Brown.

His jersey is getting retired, his statue will be built, and he will get HOF consideration. Not much else you can ask from the guy. It is Blake's fault that Cal is sitting in the AHL with his contract, not Quick's.

I will always hold Quick in the highest regards and I'm not going to slam him even if his play is off. Honestly, he's not been at his old level for some time and should have been lowered into a vet backup role a few years back like a Brian Elliott but unfortunately a lack of competent goaltending drafting/development/retention coupled with whatever the heck went on with Peterson has Quick playing to much of a role.

I'd be ok with bringing him back for another year as a 20-25 game backup because I think with better time management and workload he'll do much better. Less is more with him. But if they don't figure out what's going with Peterson it may be to hard to retain Quick, bury Peterson's cap hit and pick up a legit starter.

As much as I like what Copley's done, odds are this is a flash in the pan and he'll come down to earth. I'll let someone else overpay him.

Completely agree. I think we can all have an opinion on where he’s at but it should absolutely be done with respect.

I’ve always said that if I ever had everything on the line over a hockey result, the goaltender I’d want. Forget regular season s% and gaa, because in the moments that mattered he was absolutely money and in those situations the best I’ve ever seen.

I agree with this sentiment. He deserves tremendous respect for everything he's done. He brought swagger and a winning attitude just as the roster was coming together and the team needed the culture shift to put them over the top. I've been a fanatic since 1988, and one day last year, a new coworker, who was also a fan, asked me who my favorite all-time King was. Without really considering the question before, I said Quick - without a doubt. He's a legend. He's also done. It's an unfortunate combination right now that he's very prideful, and the prospect cupboard is bare, and it should have been addressed before the start of this season when it was obvious that Cal was broken.

I never thought he'd end his career gracefully. All his phenomenal abilities were sure to go with time and he never had prototypical size or positioning or calmness to save him from himself.

I really hope, as does everyone, that he can pull it together and bow out comfortably on his own terms, ideally kicking ass like he did last year in the playoffs...but this is the first time in his career where i can say I dont' feel confident he's coming back strongly.

I think Blake will have "the talk" with him like he had with Dustin Brown last year. Quick always struggles when he isn't playing 75% of the starts so it will be very difficult to get out of this funk.

Best case scenario is he comes in the middle of a playoff series and plays like Quick of old on the way to a cup,...otherwise I hope he gets a home start with everyone knowing he is retiring after the start, likely after the Dustin Brown night. Not sure, but I think his cap hit disappears with an in season retirement, so it would make it easy for the Kings to add another goalie.

His contact expires after this season. Signed the 10 year contract the season after winning the cup.

This.

I watch a lot of Pardon the Interruption, and Tony Kornheiser always talks about his favorite player was Willie Mays. And says the saddest thing was Mays last year, when he played for the Mets, and he was flailing around at the plate spinning while swinging and missing. It hurt him watching his childhood idol look mediocre as age had caught up to him and it was time to retire. And every time I watch Quick this season I think of that story, and realize this is probably it for him.

I love Quick, he will go down tied with Kopitar as my favorite King of all time. But Father Time is undefeated, and I sadly just don’t see anything left.

Hopefully before he goes we finally get to see him in a goalie fight.

A retirement immediately ends the contract and cap impact is my understanding. That is why so many players like Pronger don't officially retire so they keep getting paid while the team has to count them against the cap...either with cap space or LTIR.

Quick's MO was always to come far out from the net to cut the angle. And if he was forced to play closer to the net, he'd stay low and rely on his athleticism and balls to keep the puck out of the net. Basically, he dared people to beat him high. Teams are a lot more skilled now and each has at least a couple bottom sixers who can pick the top corner, to say nothing of how much more skilled the top players are now. Quick isn't young or athletic enough to either compete with that or adjust to it. He seems to be opting for a more conservative style, but as someone mentioned he was never a precise, positional goalie. Square peg, round hole. His body language is dismal. He's fighting it.

Really hope he can find some reserves within himself to at least become a serviceable backup and bring some of his gravitas to a playoff locker room (or rink).

He's an all-timer for the Kings. I think he belongs in the HoF, but I doubt he'll get there for all the usual substandard reasons that work against goalies like him.

You dont know your done til your done - could happen at any point in the season.. He was decent last season (bailed out Cal the imploder). Remember when Luc was fading and he actually got scratched by interim Torchetti... that was sad (and wrong). I think JQ knows it based on the look I saw through his mask when that goal was challenged - it was like damn im embarrassing myself. I hope he retires and doesnt pull a Brodeur.

It kind of gets away from you that sooner or later your favorite players will eventually retire.

Is it too early to start posting our favorite Quick moments? 🥹

Can’t remember the exact game, but it was vs Dallas I believe. Quick was feeling it and being feisty. Made a glove save, popped up to his feet and instantly tossed that puck down the ice. It was such a badass move lol.

It's sadness and weirdness all at once. Vachon was gone before I really got into hockey, so Quick is the only goalie I've ever seen just carry this team through games. The closest thing to it was that crazy streak Potvin had when we would go and get free donuts every game night (thanks for the high LDL Felix, you asshole ). Some nights you just knew nothing was getting by him within the first 5 minutes.

Quick can never be a backup, he's a guy who has to play regularly to be on his game. He's always gotten rusty quickly and he's just not wired like that. Backups that can come in after 8 games and win one for you are very rare, usually when two goalies are playing well it's a platoon. It's difficult, but the writing is on the wall.

It will be weird not seeing him on the roster, and what makes me the saddest is he probably won't be sticking around with the team in some capacity (like I expect for Brown). He's probably not coach material. I mean, "just pick up the puck and stop that shit" isn't the best strategy for most goalies. I'll think he'll be like Hasek where you don't hear from him much after hockey. As competitive as he is, he just seems like a realist who will just move on and enjoy life.

Complete and total fantasy. I love Jon Quick and we’ve been lucky to have him but he is not a fighter and has never been tough in that way. Spearing guys in a scrum in the crease when the linesman are 3 feet away does not make someone tough. Quite the opposite actually.

I’ve always wondered why so many of my fellow Kings fans are under the delusion that Quick would ever fight someone.

Never thought his style of play would age well, however we got a lot more miles out of him than I thought we would.
Doubt I will see a better Kings goalie in my lifetime. Hope he starts Brown's retirement game. Didn't expect him to do well against Jersey after sitting for so long, and felt the team was due a crap game. I still think LA will not win anything with Copley, and will need Quick come playoff time to get out of round 1.

Goaltending is such a fluid thing depending on the team playing in front of them. I’ve seen Quick carry teams but also average goalies that were on such good teams that all they needed to do was make those needed saves.
