Question About the Zub Hit on Tavares

So several years ago you thought he was good (maybe at around age 26-27) but now that he's 34 you're realizing he isn't as good?

Seems to track.

More like the Islanders got much better when he left and Toronto couldn’t win playoff games:

2016-2017 Islanders miss playoffs
2017-2018 Islanders miss playoffs
— Tavares leaves and the Islanders are doomed —
2018-2019 Islanders make playoffs and win in the first round, meanwhile Toronto loses in the first round
2019-2020 Islanders lose Conference finals, meanwhile Toronto loses in the play in round
2020-2021 Islanders barely lose Conference finals in 7 games, meanwhile Toronto loses in the first round

Tavares was still in his prime for those losses and he had 4 goals and 4 assists in 12 games while carrying an $11 million cap hit and earning $43.9 million.

Yes you do, when you’ve been called into concussion protocol for staying down so long, and only getting up, when the play has left the zone.

Which now groups you in with the rest of us working class proles.

I’ve seen players leave concussion protocol in the regular season faster than Tavares did. If there was nothing to check he would have been out there much quicker.

can still be penalized or reviewed for discipline.
1. They don't have to review it.
2. They don't have to tell you that they did review it and deemed it not worth of supplemental discipline.

Would you be okay with them reviewing it but not telling you?
Thanks, I understand and agree with both points. I am also not saying it deserves supplementary discipline. It was likely a missed penalty and I was surprised there wasn't more about it given the impact it had on the game

If a player puts himself in a position where he receives head contact because of the positioning of his body made head contact unavoidable, the league won't suspend a player and rarely a penalty is called. We've seen this many times and it's in the rulebook.
Understood, it is also true that even if the offender "didn't mean to" they can still be penalized. This is why I thought there might be a review and discussion about that.

Because it really wasn't much of a play, and this thread encapsulates it perfectly. If it was more than it was the usual suspects would be in here ranting and raving to the end of the earth, and i guarantee you the thread would have been up the minute the hit happened.

It probably could have been a penalty (on Zub), but I can also see why it wasn't. It certainly wasn't blatant or reckless by either player IMO .It was a weird play.. thus the thread I guess.

Consensus in here (aside from a few homers) seems to be that as well.

Thanks again, I have found this to be useful for me too. I truly wanted feedback from many sources. I try not to be a homer but there are always many ways to view the same play and the prevailing opinion (not the ones coming from either end of the spectrum) is -- yes, by the book this was technically an illegal play and MAY have been worthy of two minutes, maybe. However it was missed, or playoffs, or whatever and it was not worthy or review or suspension. I can agree with and live with that.

I didn't say violence. You are going with the "dive" angle. Then call embellishment.

You are not really answering why a hit to the head on a player without the puck is not worthy of discussion and review?

Telling you, is Tavares had zero awareness. Zub was boxing out, and Toronto top 6 is the softest shit in league history. It's understandable you didn't like the play, but there was nothing further because it was Tavares fault.

It looked like it should have been a penalty at the time, but seeing it again I think it's because Zub was in place and he skated into him. Refs also seem way more willing to let things go in front of the net in general.

The officiating in these playoffs have not been consistent at all. I counted numerous trips, holds and blatant interference run by the Leafs that did not get called. At the end of the day I think the refs let a lot go to make the calls more or less even on each side, unless one team is blatantly just massively outplaying the other.

Leafs also have exceptional sell skills. Sens have Stu and that's basically it.

Ah, victim blaming, I guess he was "asking for it." And of course we could have Zub elbow you in the head to see how hard or soft you are.

Yeah Zub didn't move at all Tavares skates right into him. This is like when you take your little brother's hand a push it into his face and tell "stop hitting yourself" except Tavares pushed his own face into Zub's shoulder

He wasn't asking for it. He just skated head first into Zub's elbow. Zub was standing still.

Tavares should look at where he's skating.

It's funny being here feeling like I'm in the Twilight zone reading these takes. The discussion on r/hockey on Reddit is far more objective, hell anywhere else I've seen has been more reasonable than this place.
