Isn't this kind of the path of most recent Euro winners? Even Spain in their glory years weren't usually winning with style points except for that one time they crushed Italy.

I mean Spain were dominant and not getting outplayed by Switzerland.

Plus they actually won trophies and could beat top nations.

From memory, which granted can be hazy, the only team that would have had an easier route to the final and a win than England would have if they someone manage to beat Netherlands and then win the final would be Portugal in 2016.

Southgate has beaten one 'top' team during his tenure, and that was Germany when they were clearly a team in transition, so I'm not even sure it's fair to include them.

England
What universe is this where England are good at penalties? Lucky again though, Switzerland had some good opportunities in extra time. Saka and Mainoo were England's best players. Shaw was decent off the bench.

Kane's average position was between Mainoo and Rice  Foden and Trippier should be replaced too. Can't see Southgate changing anything though.

home it never been to?

Depends. “It’s coming home” was the unofficial anthem for Germany’s 96 euro win :naughty:

Here's the thing, it ultimately doesn't matter how well England play or not, what matters is that they're still in the tournament. It's survive and advance as my American friends like to say.

England is basically 80s Germany now, and it tends to lead to good things on the scoreboard.

Not really, we managed to beat a top team in the 80s

Then and there
Can definitely see that Southgate drew that corner up

Some corners and free kicks were so badly executed, that one has to indeed wonder who planned them. It's one thing to try to be careful not to allow dangerous counters, but England passed the ball back to keeper within 15 seconds from their offensive corner or free kick, without even attemting a cross or shot. Why bring any CBs up inside the box if the back passing to keeper is all you're going to do.

Surely even Southgate couldn't have drawn up that stupid plan, but he has installed the overcautios culture into players mind.
