Deserved. I'm actually glad Finland won this. Brutal coaching, probably on pair with Finland a few years back when someone got fired mid tournament. I was actually thinking I hope it doesn't reach 2 digits if we win and gets to face Canada in the Semi, thankfully we will never find out.

In 2017, Finns had an awful team with no other goal scorers than Eeli Tolvanen, very few guys with pro games and totally unrealistic expectations due to maybe the best ever Finns WJC team in 2016 (Aho, Laine, Puljujärvi, Rantanen, Kapanen, Hintz etc.). Never has got the Finnish team so much worse in 2 consecutive tournaments. The head coach took a suicide mission without any hopes win. The team was like 8th best in talent as Finns tend to be like 4th or 5th best usually, and happened to be 1st or 2nd best in 2016 with a firepower that Finnish team has never had before and never will have after that. I mean, they did not have a super good goalie, but still they did challenge every opponent to a goal scoring race and won. Never happened to any other Finnish team I am aware of.

Ah, now I get it. I think it must be a mental thing, but a guy like Jalonen seems to wire his teams correctly. He was successful before 2019, too.

Is Pennanen similar as a person or somehow affiliated to Jalonen? He also seems to get his guys fired up in a relaxed way. They looked overwhelmed vs. Canada but seemed to learn a thing or two about intensity during the game, and it carried over to today's game.
Pennanen really is a quite similar type of coach as Jalonen. Seems to get the best out of his teams at the right moments. He plays also with quite similar tactics as Jalonen. Likes puck control hockey, but is willing to sometimes make surprising changes to his approach depending on the opponents style.

In my opinion Pennanen values team play over individualistic skills even more than Jalonen, but otherwise they are quite similar type of coaches. Great motivators and masters of the locker room, but especially in a positive and constructive way.

And yes, Pennanen has been a lot influenced by Jalonen, as he has been in Jalonen’s coaching team for the men’s national team and won the sensational gold with Jalonen in the 2019 men’s WHC tournament.

Pennanen is one of the extremely talented young Finnish coaches, with Jussi Ahokas and Tommi Niemelä, who both have already won world championships as the junior national team head coaches. Ahokas winning both U20 and U18 tournaments and Niemelä winning U18 tournament. Both are also doing almost miracles with their Liiga teams that have quite below average Liiga rosters, but are quite close to the top of the league with their coaching.

So Finland definitely has a bright future in hockey with the very talented coaches in addition to a lot of talented young players that have been produced during the last ten years.

Phew what a game.
But i have to admit that i was wrong again.
I truly thought that Sweden will dominate this game and they took 0-2 lead in 1st period.

2nd period was Finland's and Sweden started scare to lose the game.
I don't know was that Finland's disallowed goal really an offside because
all the camera angles what Finland's TV5 had the quality of the camera reviews was quite blurry.
But referees decision is the law in hockey and that's it.

3rd period was Finland's again
even Sweden had their scoring chances actually quite couple good chances.

But Piiroinen was once again very good in our net
and he gave more confidence to whole Finnish team with his saves.

Lundell showed once again how good leader he can be.
And that 2-2 goal was absolutely nice Florida Panthers is getting very good player in Anton.

Was about a damn time for Roni Hirvonen to score finally.
And what the best his 1st goal in the tournament came 23 seconds before the end of regulation time.
That Finland's 3rd goal was absolutely dagger straight Swedes heart.

Usually i don't get emotional because of the hockey game.
But i can't stop crying because i'm so freaking happy and proud of that how our boys played tonight.

This Finnish U20 WJC team has giving to me strong vibes
of Finland's 2019 IIHF worlds gold medal winning team.
It's always great to beat Swedes in elimination round.

Congrats Finland.
We made it see you in semifinals.

It was good goal and not offside, puts you think what is the level of officiating in these games

They should have seen that. There is absolutely no good reason they didnt

Either video ref was

- not on level required for his job
- didnt care
- is corrupted

Well we f***ed it up as we usually do. I called this yesterday already. Got a bad feeling today as well when I read the interview with Gunler, where he was way too confident, as if he had already won. Meanwhile the Finns were humble. I’m tired of this attitude. Even the Canadians, who are dominant enough to be cocky, were humble prior to the game against Finland...

Congrats Finland! You played very well and truly deserved the win!
Yeah that is definetally a bad omen and i don't blame you, i remember when Team Sweden had arraenged post final parties and all for the gold medal game 2014 thinking it was a surefire win, didn't really turn out that way (sorry to remind you i really don't mean to pour salt in your wound)

No worries, I sincerely hate all of that so if anything it just makes me mad. The newspapers aren’t better. I’ve stopped counting the times they’ve declared us the winner of the Worlds after beating i.e. Belarus 5-0 in the first game of the tournament.

Always be humble and respect your opponent, at least then, if you screw up, you won’t look like a complete idiot.

Gunler /the right side pic/ not so happy now regarding that statement ;)

Yes, he made a complete fool of himself and it’s pathetic to see him sitting there. But these kind of posts are unnecessary. I believe all Swedes in here have congratulated Finland and agreed that you were clearly the better team. No need to rub it in. Stay classy. :)

I'm not Finnish though, but I agree that enough said now regarding this game - let's move on

So, Gunler said in an interview, that Sweden should beat Finland, and then you post a picture of Raymond in pain on the bench after getting a puck to the face as some kind of "karma is a bitch" moment?

Also, what was Gunler supposed to say? Some typical "we must play hard, they are a good team"?

Yeah, no. The overall skill level of that 2017 squad was no worse than this year's. The top-six wasn't of course in the 2016 level (that year was truly an anomaly), but it wasn't all riding on Tolvanen either. With Vesalainen, Räsänen, Kuokkanen, Koivula and Palmu in the lineup, there was a permission to expect more. Also, as you can see, the defense had a fair bit of high-profile names. Avoiding the relegation games with that lineup was far from a "suicide mission". The team wasn't maybe the hottest medal candidate; I'd call it the 5th/6th best on paper that year - but QF was very much attainable, and as we all know (or should know), anything goes in single game elimination. It was also a year of fairly little pre-tournament controversy regarding player selections - Rautakorpi more or less built the consensus team of the players available. He simply failed to get adequate results with it, and gets the full credit for that failure.

Although, it should be said that despite this failure, Rautakorpi is by no means a crappy coach overall - he's still a very good Liiga coach; nobody's questioning his merits in that environment. He simply wasn't the right man to helm the U20 NT.

They are good players. Why do you dream of hype dying? As long as they would produce in SHL hype will stay, so you want them to bust or smth?

No... but the hype around them is ridiculous... they produce in SHL but not in JWC that should tell you something.

There was no super line after sweden lost their best centers. Not sure how you missed this since you seem to be swedish.
Holtz severely underperformed but Raymond overall had a good tournament, and showed up against Finland.

I know we lost quit a few guys... all the hype around Holtz and Raymonds can't have passed you by either if you are a fellow swede. (Yes I am born and raised in Sundsvall)

Sure they are good otherwise they wouldent play in the SHL but from all the hype they got from media etc they were not showing up for the hype.

Maybe it's unfair of me pointing them out since it's a team effort but with all this hype around them you would expect more.

Raymond against Finland is one of the best individual performances by a player in these quarterfinals (so far). Again, I think he did well but Holtz was very disappointing compared to expectations.
Hype doesn't disappear because of a couple of bad games though. Maybe Pettersson's hype should have died after the WJCs he had..

Did miss his WJC... why bringing him up? Don't remember the hype around him but I do remember it about Dahlin.
