Not that it matters much but I can't believe Canada didn't score when they had it in the Slovakia zone for 2-3 minutes straight.

Byfield ice time:

USA: 11:40
Russia: 12:56
Germany: 8:55
CZE: 11:26

They did not track TOI in 2013, but I would wager MacKinnon's ice time was similar to or more than that.

Again, there wasn't really anything that happened in the USA game other than game script to justify the drop in TOI, and no one individual could have been singled out for Russia.

I think people are reacting as if Byfield is playing 20 minutes a game.

The problem for me isn’t that he isn’t getting a ton of ice time, it’s that he’s been essentially invisible and useless in the time he has been on the ice. Does he even have a point yet?

As I’ve stated before, he’s a big guy that doesn’t use his size to his advantage properly and I think that’s going to hurt him at higher levels.

What a moron. First minute and you are out and likely out for the rest of the tournament.
What the f*uck are you on about bud? Hit was clean, Slovak player was scared sh*tless and bails, and refs are brutal. Add the three together and u get what u saw. Ironically you are the one who sounds like a moron. Enjoy the game!

I think Byfield has played as solid as I expect a 17 year old to play at this tourney. He’s not a liability when he’s on the ice and that’s really all I can ask for.

I mean, how often does a 17 year old really stand out and contribute? McDavid is the only one I can think of in the “modern” day and Bouwmeester, Spezza, and Ellis from the early-late 2000’s.

Drouin was playing on the top line as a 17yo.
Stamkos was close to PPG.
Tavares has 4 goals and 5pts in 7games
Crouse put up some points despite limited minutes
Crosby was obviously very effective

Its rare but not as rare as you might think.

Fair enough.....those were just the ones I could think of off the top of my head

To be honest I am totally shocked by his play
Not trying to demean the guy but his stock has dropped a ton

MacKinnon would have played less minutes in 2013. He began the tournament as the 13th forward, then was eventually moved up to 4th line right wing. My notes show him playing with Anthony Camara and Mark McNeill. So, think Mercer level minutes.

Drouin, who was also draft eligible (and MacKinnon's linemate in Halifax) worked his way up to the top line in 2013 with Nugent-Hopkins and Strome/Scheifele. Obviously their respective draft status wasn't impacted as MacKinnon still went 1st overall.
You are entirely correct. I believe MacKinnon was only moved up after the JC Lipon suspension, he was the 13th forward before that.

He was also very lacklustre at the Hlinka tournament as well. Starting to see some concerns that he can’t dominate when playing against better competition

I am not questioning his skills nor do I care if he dominates
The pace is too quick for him at this stage of his career
