We had a US ref give 12 straight penalties to Team Canada in the Gold Medal women’s hockey game between the US and Canada at the 2002 Olympics.

Canada still won BTW.

Yeah, since you clearly remember that episode and a fact that the ref was US thats an evidence that this type of issue is important.

Refs had no impact whatsoever on that game. Give it a rest. I thought Canada was lucky to win the game with that score and things could have swung dramatically with a little puck luck. But blaming the officiating is ridiculous. I'm 51 and if you want to really get into how Canada has fared against officiating in international sports in my lifetime, boy oh boy can I share some memories. Lemme know if interested.

The reality is you could hold a tryout for the 50 best officials at this level based on ability, not knowing their nationality, and 46 of them would likely be Canadian. It doesn't mean they will never make a mistake or miss a call, but just like I wouldn't want Canadian officials reffing the soccer World Cup final or the cricket world championships, having Canadian officials overseeing international hockey is still an acceptable scenario to anyone who understands the training and experience that our officials go through in this country. Obviously the IIHF agrees.

I for one hope that the camera is bigger and even more obtrusive.

I know the Hockey Canada president can manipulate it using a secret remote control joystick and closed circuit television to make sure it’s in place for any late game clearances.

No fans in the arena to document what happened. I expect the TSN cameras to save at least three Canadian pucks from heading out. The good old Canadian refs will make sure that there are no other penalties levied against Canada. As for Russia, let's just say I hope for their sake that they've been practicing killing 5-on-3s.

Eh I’m of Canadian heritage...my great grandfather played semi pro back in Quebec I think.

Canada vs Us will be a great match up if it happens! This Canadian team is quite deep and Levi has definitely showed that goalie play is not the weakness we expected. The 2001 Americans are probably the best of my life time and I’m excited to see the match up!

Now of course the Finns are super solid and could upset us while Russia Canada is always competitive!

The difference is that there are good refs and bad refs and where they come from is irrelevant.

When I hear about a French-Canadian ref favouring Montreal or a Calgary-born ref being tough on Edmonton because of the Battle of Alberta it is time to put on the tinfoil hat and roll your eyes.

I get all the optics in a normal situation but this is decidedly abnormal.

In my lifetime I have seen terrible Canadian refs and excellent Russian refs so I really don’t care where they come from.

It’s not complaining about the refs that’s the problem, it’s the fact people think that the refs always favour Canada. I don’t think I’ve ever watched an NHL game and said “the refs always favour [insert team] and are against us”.

Czech fans are great. Always have been, love when the WJC or the WHC are in the Czech Republic. The crowds are always loud and jumping, I mean that both literally and figuratively.
