Q sending message to Stalberg/Saad

the plot thickens...

Q says Stalberg reports about PP time dispute were "100 percent inaccurate. Viktor didn't play, he knows the reasons why."

Mark Lazerus ‏@MarkLazerus 34m
Q has been reluctant to change his lineup after wins this season. Will Stalberg be in the lineup for Game 2? "We'll see." #Blackhawks

Parsing Q's words, it sounds like he's not denying the conversation took place, only that it had anything to do with the benching.

http://blogs.suntimes.com/blackhawks/2013/05/quenneville_stalberg_benching_.html

A source said Tuesday that Stalberg had been benched for questioning his role after getting only one power play shift during the five-game series.

"That story's 100 percent inaccurate," Quenneville said. "Viktor didn't play, he knows the reasons why. It has nothing to do with anything about our conversation. It was strictly nothing to do with that. At all. That situation wasn't even addressed."

Quenneville still did not elaborate on why Stalberg was benched, pointing out that with Dave Bolland re-entering the lineup after being out with an injury, "Somebody had to come out."

He pointed to some of the tough decisions he's had to make all year, particularly with the rotation of defenseman Michal Rozsival and Sheldon Brookbank throughout the regular season, as an example of players sitting despite deserving to play. Stalberg played 47 of 48 games this year, and all five against the Wild.

"This year we had some tough decisions as far as who plays and doesn't plays," Quenneville said. "We had the rotation on our back end with Brooksie and Rozy ... every game one of them had to sit out. It was definitely unfair for those guys, but that's the situation we're in, where we have to make some tough decisions."

So is it just b/c he thinks Stalberg is playing bad? Why didn't he do the pre-game skate with the other scratches? Inquiring minds want to know.

I'm going back to my original thought now that the PP time has been squashed:

He's mad his line got broken up and didn't want to play on the 4th.

I could care less why he was scratched. He'll play again in the playoffs and the Hawks beat Detroit pretty easily without him. Like Q said, this team has so much depth that people who deserve to play may end up being scratched. This should just give Stalberg more motivation to play better

This whole thing to me seems like something that has been building.

Q never seemed to like Stalberg for whatever reason and has seemed to almost hold him back. The guy has a career year last year and this year he is on the third line first game of the year with Carcillo playing in the top 6.

Maybe he just got feed up with being on Q's crap list and wanted to know what was going on.

Not saying that is the case just saying this whole thing seems to have more behind it then this one incident and I have a feeling if Stalberg had been a headcase in the past we would have heard about it before.

Brouwer scored 22 goals in 2010 and ended up on the 4th line by the time the Hawks won the Cup, in favor of Tomas Kopecky in the top-6. Did we ever hear anything about him being upset about that? How about Versteeg, coming off being nominated for the Calder and having a great year, was on the third line for the entire playoffs. Ever hear anything about that? It's about the team, not yourself at this time of year.

Stalberg was put on the third line this year, and got 2:11 of PP time per game. He also had good chemistry with his linemates and they were successful. If Stalberg really cares that much about playing in the top-6 all the time, or getting a lot of PP time, perhaps he should sign with the Panthers, or Flames in the off-season.

If that's true Bolland is not only a great in game agitator, he agitates his own teammates by coming back from injury. What a rat.

Bolland was playoff Bolland last night BTW. Shaw and Bickel (especially Shaw) didn't look great but that's a tough spot with a new linemate. I expect them to improve as a line Saturday.

Q just didn't like the way it was playing out in the media, tried to squash it. I'm pretty sure if everything was all good Stalberg would have been in there last night.

The latest from Q is the benching was not about Stalberg complaining about PP time (“100% inaccurate” a strangely strong (100%) and at the same time weak (inaccurate) statement.) So the story is it was simply that Bolland is back in on the 3rd line someone had to sit, and Q chose Stalberg.

There may be more to it, but on face value, fair enough. With Bolland back on the 3rd line I have no big problem with Q picking Stalberg to sit after his decent-but-uninspired 1st round. I think the hawks would be better moving Shaw down to the 4th with Fro and Kruger (that’s a pretty tenacious 4th line) but I don’t see any obvious choice.

And I can’t blame Stalberg for being pissed for having to sit in place of Carcillo, who is clearly a less effective player and even more mistake-prone.

I didn’t see Carcillo do anything to stop Applicator from running guys all game, and I’m pretty sure the Wings would rather see Carcillo than Stalberg, especially their D. So hopefully this is resolved over the next game or two and Stalberg is back in there with a little more fire and composure and Q can feel better having sent a message to the team via ice-time/benching - something he seemed to regret not doing last year.

I'm not taking out my pitchfork over this, but we are better with stalberg on the ice over carcillo. not even sure how there's a debate about it.

It's still nothing to have a thread going to 20 pages or more. A bottom 6 player gets replaced by a bottom 6 player and the team didn't miss a beat... hmmm

Highly unlikely that a player of Stalberg's pay grade (http://www.capgeek.com/player/1246) on a team like the 2012-2013 Chicago Blackhawks would complain at this juncture about ice time at all. A Crosby or a Toews might get away with it, but a low-paid player would know better. If he did, shame on Stalberg...that would be equivalent to immature high school nonsense. I remain confident that he did not, and that his Game 1 scratching was completely unrelated. We'll see him back in the lineup soon enough as many in this thread have stated.

Viktor Stalberg said Quenneville told him he needs to be more intense, produce more.

Viktor Stalberg denies reports he complained about his power play time: "Channel my inner Bryzgalov: Check your sources."

And there you have it, both from Q and Stalberg. Shoddy reporting as we've become accustomed to.

to be fair, the inital report might be right, but Q is not gonna air that to the public and Stalberg seems like he got the message and isn't gonna pipe off to reporters either.

I agree with you 100%. It could be true, despite its anonymous and wholly unconfirmed nature. That said, the report - if it even exists - could have come from an HF poster, even me. In any case, with Q and Stalberg confirming that the report is completely false, we're left with little else to go on except to watch and learn.

What about Shaw? I thought Shaw was much worse than Viktor on the overall during the Minny series. Why wasn't he held out? Whether it's "performance" or the orginally purported rift, it doesn't change the fact that it's pure ********.

I guess I feel just as strongly about this team being able to win with a different coach as Q does this team with inferior (to other options) players. I'm sure I'm the only one, but I really wish we'd get Q out of here. The most overrated coach in NHL history IMO. He continually pulls stupid stunts like these despite overwhelming logic to support the contrary. Even when he actually gets something right (not messing with lines during the regular season, giving Frolik and Kruger big roles on the PP) he eventually tries his damnedest to **** it up. It's a yearly circus with that fool.

Dude I have been on that boat for a long time now and don't think I am getting off anytime soon. He would have to win the Cup this year for me to back off that stance.

q's been hard on stalberg since we got him, i funny know what guess on behind the scenes at all but its curious regardless. and i don't see how we are better in any way with carcillo/bollig on the ice over stalberg. strange times, and I'd love to be a fly on the wall to find out what's really going on.

I must agree. Q has gone over the top this time with his Iron Mike impersonation. At lease Keenan would bench a player, then give him a chance to respond. Will Q?? Not so sure. Babcock schools him most nights but gets littlle recognition.
