No interest. Wish I did, but between following college hockey and the NHL there just isn't enough time. If the league succeeds though and I hear about the games being of really good quality then I could probably be swayed to start caring. Hope they succeed

The new PWHL (Professional Women Hockey League) begins today. There doesn't seem to be a lot of talk about it on this board.
What is your initial level of interest in this league?
I'm slightly curious at the start but I am dubious it will maintain my interest. What about you?
Saw it mentioned today on TSN that it starts today and thought “oh cool”.

That’s the first time I’ve even thought of it and that ended my interest at the same moment.

I do hope it’s successful as it can only grow the game and the ladies deserve that opportunity, there’s just so many other better hockey to follow on an already busy schedule

Hockey media attacking people for not watching is so f***ing cringe lmfao. NBA media doesn't do that with the WNBA
I'll be honest I think that is one of the reasons why some people don't want to watch it. I watched a period and I would rather drive to my local rink and watch better minor hockey live.
This has become pretty divided and there are two reasons.
1. Not just hockey but evey sport. Soccer as well. Revenue and equal pay. The amount of people saying that it isn't fair and contniue to blame men for making two much money all the while not holding WOMEN accoutable for not watching. YEs some teams have some games sold out but much of that I am sure is corporate and the novelty will wear off. Most people don 't care.
We essentially are in the first generation of moms who have played minor hockey. We still have the vast majority of people playing hockey becasue of their fathers. MAny girls still prefer dance and gymnastics as well as soccer as well as school sports like volleyball etc.
If you want this league to succeed there are going to hasve to be many MOMS taking their daughters to the games. Thats not saying that some dads won't take thier girls. Some will.
If women want this league to succeed. Take your kids. Buy a jersey and a puck. But some souvineers.
2. Stop acting like this is good hockey. Yes this is good hockey for women. In fact it is many of the best female players in the world. Stop attacking people for stating the fact that it is mostly boring. Just because we beleive that it isn't high level hockey doesn't mean that we don't want it to succeed. Just like the person has said, the media and certain groups of people contniue to blame a certain demographic for having zero interest.
This is a hockey board. We are here beacue we love hockey. I'm willing to be that most people onhere ae men. As of now 60/120 votes have ZERO INTEREST on a hockey board. At what point are any of these people willing to pay money and travel to watch something?
Like I said. Stop blaming men for having no interest and start telling women to put their money where their mouth is. The more people attack people for not supporting the more I will not support.

Do I want this league to succeed. Personally I don't care myself. But i love the game and want people to love the game. I want girls to have someone to look up to on the ice. But like I said. If there is no demand there is no product.

I hope the league does well, but there’s just so many options of hockey to watch right now. I would love if they had less of an overlap with NHL games. A summer start would be awesome, IMO. At least for me, by August I’m absolutely jonesing for hockey. As is right now, I’ll probably throw on games randomly if I’m scrolling, but I’m way less likely to seek out games than I would if the NHL wasn’t also simultaneously in season.

I am actually excited to check out the PWHL, MN could have a pretty good team and all games are being streamed on Youtube for free. We had the first overall pick and got the consensus best center, Heise, a Minnesotan. Oh, and their current jerseys are old MN Moose colors, Purple primary with black and white.
Just quoting myself from yesterday. I have the utmost respect for these women and their games, I grew up playing with a girl that would kick a lot peoples asses here (her younger brother is currently doing it in the NHL.) I hope the league finds stability, would love to bring my daughter to games as she grows up. I think it takes time, but the skill part of this game and the mental fortitude required transcend gender, there is glory to be had for anyone that can be dedicated enough to push this sport further, and I think this league at least has the potential to do that for women in hockey.

Reminds me of Adam Silver coming out and saying more young women need to start watching the WNBA... ultimately women viewership is going to have to carry the PWHL into having a respectable following

I think their goal is to get revenue from the NHL. The top players might even be happy earning 60% of the top men's earnings.
Not happening unless they start bringing in a ton of revenue.

I voted low but it's not a quality thing. These teams are all on the other side of the country. If I'm watching on TV I'd rather watch teams I have some history of watching.

It’s kind of funny actually, I would guess in general not a lot of females are into hockey.

The ones that are, probably are still only interested in top level hockey.

The only women's sport I enjoy watching is tennis. And I think a big reason for why women's tennis is so popular is there are personal play styles, storylines and rivalries that you can follow. Hard to do that with a team game like hockey. Which is why I think women's basketball and hockey are always going to struggle.

The idea that women have some obligation to watch is ridiculous.

I watched a period of the New York/Toronto game and there was already a lot of falling over without hitting. Adding hitting would just probably mean more players sliding all over the ice off their skates.

I do think women’s hockey is more entertaining than women’s soccer or women’s basketball though.

It’s a better product, imo
Really? I find the opposite. The Women's World Cup, for instance, I found way more entertaining from a skill and competitive level than I did any of the recent Women's World Championships or Olympics in hockey.

Obviously there's still a huge gap, but I found that the women in soccer looked a lot closer to their male counterparts in terms of skilled plays they could pull off versus how far the talent level in women's hockey is versus their NHL male counterparts. With soccer, they could do a lot of the same stuff but just not as fast/as crisp. With hockey, they struggle with even the most rudimentary things like making D to D passes onto the tape with any sort of pressure.

Women are welcome to do whatever they want, But if you want the league to succeed, it isn't going to happen without the support of women and for the most part that has been the case in virtually every sport. Women play and watch sports but for the most part it is men going to games. Not women. And why would men go watch a sport that isn't as good as hockey they can watch for free at their local rink? That's where the women come in and if history tells us anything, they are NOT going to support it.
What is rediculous about pointing out facts?

National teams are a different bar though.

Even a lot of the people who shit on womens hockey will happily cheer for team canada or team usa.

I tuned in for a bit on the game today. One thing i'll give the women is that they seem to play pretty well structurally and positionally. You immediately notice the lack of talent tho; lots of broken plays, turn overs, plays that just don't develop because they don't have the physical tools.

We all know it's pretty comparable to watching your local Junior C team and i'm not going to shit on them for it. If they want to have their league that's cool - I just hope they don't start demanding absurd things.

"How much you wanna make a bet I can throw a football over them mountains?... Yeah... Coach woulda put me in fourth quarter, we would've been state champions. No doubt. No doubt in my mind."

That's all I can think of when reading that...

Your beer league team would be down double digits by the end of the first period.
Lol yeah right. Most beer leagues would shred these girls

I’m sure lots of women will be taking there kids as well as fathers.

For someone who doesn’t care, you seem to care more than most posters in here so far.

The idea that women have some obligation to watch is ridiculous.
They don't have an obligation at all, but if the PWHL wants to succeed and develop an actual fanbase, they will need average women and young girls to become fans and commit to supporting the league, and not rely on men to go to games and watch on TV. That's just the reality of the situation.

Speaking personally, none of my fiancée, three sisters, or mom even mentioned the league or any intention to watch over the holidays, and same for the wives of my big group of friends, all of whom are huge hockey fans. The league can't just rely on men and hardcore female hockey fans (because there aren't as many yet) to grow the league.

No they wouldn’t, there generally isn’t my structure or systems in beer league.

Beer league I’m in has about 7 tiers, and then a bunch of teams in each tier as a league.
So ya level 1/tier 1 would do well,

also their business seems fine so...
Their stock has tanked and now they run ads constantly pandering to the male demographic that ran from them. I'd say it's far from "fine" but hey whatever.

I doubt this league lasts 10 seasons.

For those on the fence, I can perhaps make you follow the PWHL becase Toronto is as much of a laughing stock as in the NHL!

In the draft they passed up one of the best young players in the game in Alina Müller (SUI) to select a long time retired canadian Jocelyne Larocque. Thats like refusing to draft an 18 year old Sidney Crosby and instead picking a 35 year old Nicklas Lidstrom who has been retired for a year, simply shambolic decision making!

Toronto will regret this for the next 10 years being a laughing stock while Müller will light it up in Boston :D
