Do you not notice how shitty and scrambly the play is?
Hahaha my goodness what a comment.

The biggest weirdos on this site will be the ones that go at lengths to tear this league down.

Don’t get me wrong you don’t need any interest but some are going to go out of their way to hate it which is almost disturbing.

I’d also love to know the skill level of these guys I’m talking about.

I enjoyed watching the Ottawa game I was able to catch. That being said, with no local team and a schedule of following my hometown NHL club.. I can't imagine I get too involved with keeping up.

I think it would be great if top level female hockey players were able to have the fame and fortune as the male hockey players. It comes down to who's watching and going to games, merchandise, all that. Female athletes in certain other sports have the interest levels of the public to achieve exactly what their counterparts do. Hockey isn't one of them.

I don't like seeing ppl trash women but there's a lot of accusatory stuff towards ppl that don't really deserve it. If it's warranted, absolutely.. blast them, but if I'm being honest here.. it's annoying as all hell seeing the narrative pushed that everyone is a misogynistic person.

Hockey just isn't as appealing to the masses when it's females playing. That's not clear cut as something nefarious.

I enjoyed watching the Ottawa game. I wish the women's league well and really think that more support by fellow females is a must. If they aren't interested in watching the league, I don't see it succeeding. And it shouldn't be propped up and force fed "just because".

Good luck, well wishes.

Nobody has to go out of their way to tear this league down. All you have to do is watch it and relay your thoughts. Seeing it for what it is is the easiest thing in the world.

The quality between this and the NHL is just like the gulf separating the WNBA and the NBA. It's an unwatchable mess.

There is no business reason for this league existing, only a political one. We'll see just how devout this league's supporters, and sponsors are when they start losing money.

Who said it would be as good as the NHL? They aren’t making NHL salaries. You are literally going out of your way to bash the hockey. If you expected the same quality that is on your for being stupid. Such a big man being butt hurt about a womens league you won’t have to watch or pay attention too.

Also guarantee any of the women competing in the “unwatchable mess” would probably dust you at any point of their lives on the ice.

Zero interest. But then I'm only haphazardly interested in the NHL outside the Penguins, and couldn't care less about the AHL/ECHL/etc.etc. outside of Penguins prospects. There's too many sports, and too many things outside sports, to get invested in stuff that far down the pyramid.

I never said it should be as good as the NHL. The problem is that the quality of game played in the PWHL ranks behind:

Midget AAA boys
Junior A tier 2 (AJHL, BCHL, etc.)
Major Junior (OHL, WHL, QMJHL)
US college hockey
University Canadian hockey
virtually all men's leagues.

There are so many levels of hockey before you even get to the NHL that offer a superior product (and can be seen in person for peanuts), that it's impossible to justify the existence of the PWHL on any grounds except for "but they're women".

The fact of the matter is subpar products do not typically succeed on their own. Unless they become the recipient of some sort of corporate welfare, they won't even exist in five years time.

If the WNBA hasn't managed to become a success after 25 years even with massive financial support from the NBA, there is zero reason to think that the PWHL will be able to.

Attendance for the league opening games topped out at about 8,000 people. In four months, once the novelty is gone, what kind of crowds will they draw for an evening game on a week night? Two or three thousand? Unless those tickets are worth more than Willy Wonka's Golden Ticket, there is no way there is enough money available to pay the players are livable wage.

Saying these things isn't an attack on women. It's just an attempt to get people to wake up to reality.

the skill level is below other offerings they'll have to find a way to market their players personalities to be successful.
I don't want to come across as outright saying it can't ever succeed.
I feel that to succeed they are going to need more than social guilt.

As it sits now the psychological payoff of watching is hindered. Mainly IMO due to less physical stakes.
We don't really talk about it but a major subconscious draw to hockey(outside of instinctual tribalism) is how in the NHL we are always a moment away from amazing skill or brutal violence.
Sadly the women, due to physical differences don't offer the same risk level and that subconsciously takes away some of the enjoyment. Thats not specific to women, since female MMA is awesome<it has that risk factor.

But it is still hockey and growing the game in anyway is a positive. So if it can generate a female following that inspires more girls to play than thats a win win.
Due to us males being 1 step from cavemen, we still need that risk to become vested.

I heard Canadian TV numbers for first 2 games, they weren’t exact about it.

Game 1 - National Game, on CBC, Sportsnet and TSN - about 850k
New York vs Toronto

Game 2 - Regional game on TSN5.
A little over 400k
Montreal vs Ottawa

Edit: Accurate numbers
879k avg during game 1 (National)
Looks like 2.9 checked in

Why do you care so much. I can’t understand how this bugs you so bad. Such a weird hill to die on. Just don’t pay attention. You obviously are begging for it to fail.

Midget AA, maybe. A decent Jr C team in Ontario would win the league.
Thanks for that. Not far off of what I am hearing from other people.

The next obvious question....why would people pay to watch hockey of a Midget caliber when you can watch it for free?
I mean if the caliber of the hockey warrants paying for it then fine but that doesnt appear to be true with the PWHL.
Once the novelty wears off how is this League going to sustain itself?

Just go down to a rink for the sights and sounds and smells of beer leaguers or kids playing hockey. The women's league is a glorified funded beer league. I don't know these players, their teams are brand new made up and there's no glory or prestige or anything. If I'm too old to learn how to play new games and keep going back to 15 year old titles and Nintendo DS games, I'm not gonna like, spend a lifetime figuring out who to like and hate and why for a league that won't exist in 2 years.

Only polls in the front page that have more comments are Matthews polls.

It’s odd to me how bad a lot of you want it to fail.

I’m really enjoying it. The women’s game is very fun to watch. USA - Canada remains the best rivalry in sports

Can tell the guys who never got laid by their comments about all the men’s leagues that are better etc.

You keep saying I care so much, which is wrong. I'm just pointing out that this league is folly. I'm not going to be high fiving myself when it fails. I just won't be surprised, or like the activists/proponents for this league enraged when it inevitably happens.

Nah you care. You want it to fail it’s painfully obvious or you wouldn’t spend so much time in here. Good try though.

It’s been mentioned several times, even if they had logos, CEO said the jerseys wouldn’t be ready, as suppliers need several months lead time.

Weird hill for a dealbreaker, the jerseys lol.

The comment you responded to was incredibly ignorant.

Hitting is not allowed in soccer or basketball, yet they are extremely physical sports with tons of body contact in them.
They are not extremely physical, they are just physical. I played both for like 15 years competitively. The most physicality you get in soccer is guys bodying each other for control/position and slide tackling. Extremely minimal. Basketball is a bit more physical, but still wouldn't call it an "extremely physical sport" There is a bit of a physical aspect but very minor.

Martial arts, American football and hockey are extremely physical sports.

That's the definition of physical.

And a sport that is played nearly 100% of the time in a physical manner, is what I would call "extremely physical".

The word you're looking for, to describe martial arts and American Football, is "violent"
