A lot of factors. They haven't played each other in the playoffs since 1994 (before that it was six times in 15 years), both haven't really been on the same level at the same time (Islanders were awful post-94 then were respectable for a few years during the Peca-Yashin years, Rangers were awful post-97 until the first lockout, then were respectable to contenders after). Ever since MLB started Interleague play which to me has been a good thing Mets-Yankess from 97-2001 was pretty much Rangers-Islanders from 79-84. Media loved that rivalry. Also Rex Ryan. Giants-Jets was never a real rivalry until Big Mouth Rex came to town and made it a thing for a few years. Finally, and this is not law just an observation feel free to correct me, the millennials and younger kids just don't have that same anger and aggression as us slightly or much older posters do at least in regards to sports, pop culture. Kids I work with don't listen to aggressive music and are too polite to talk any trash. PC in that regards?

Last big rivalry moment I remember between the two teams was 06-07 during the infamous Simon tomahawking Hollweg game. That was the most lively crowd I have ever been a part of during a regular season NHL game. Even moreso than the Stadium Series game in January 2014.

Remember that game well. Ryan Hollweg was the best pure hitter the Rangers have employed in decades. And that was about the only thing he did well. The Simon tomahawk was brutal.

The Theo, Sandy McCarthy years were fun. Theo instigated everything and let Sandy deal with Cairns and Pilon.

Tomas Kloucek, was the best I've seen on the Rangers dating back to 00-01.

I don't know, I hate the Islanders just as much as I always do which is why it was amazing seeing Tavares leave. I think if you'd have to walk out of the building at MSG or Barclays the past 2-3 years after each one of those losses to that shitty team, you'd feel the same way.

The Islanders will always be #1 no matter what in terms of teams I hate. I cannot stand them.

Growing up on LI and becoming a fan in the late 80s when the rivalry was still white hot, I despise them. They are my Klingons, Joker, etc.

No Buchnevich, Kreider, Tony, or Pionk unfortunately.

It’s going to be interesting to see if Gilmour bounces back and plays hard to compensate for that mistake he made against the Flyers.
Crawley is also intriguing. I heard he made good strides last season.
I’m happy to see Hajek again. I thought he may only ever become a really good #5 D or a decent #4 D, but he’s shown more potential.
Lettieri is getting another chance?
Vesey...eh. I’ll give him another shot, but I’m not expecting much.
Bigras is probably the only Rangers prospect that I don’t know much about, so it’ll be interesting to see him play.
Tokarski is rightfully getting another chance. I 100% believe he should be the backup, while Georgiev should get most of the starts for the Wolf Pack. I think it’ll be better for his development, even though the competition may be a little too easy.
Shattenkirk is hopefully going to be good.

Hollweg was fun for about a year. Once it became apparent that the Rangers could develop NHL players (which some of the league still thinks isn't true just check the main boards) he became redundant.

This game is going to be awful and I'll love it.

Like...three Veterans, a few big prospects, and A LOT of borderline players. And McLeod.

I think his point totals are going to fall off a cliff with AV gone, not sure we'll see much interest in him around the league. Signed through 2020

What did AV do for him? He's a guy that mostly cleans up around the net. Not sure what AV's system did to help him score.

Why does he have McQuaid at forward here?

Isles have Martin and Mayfield in. Clutterbuck too. That guy hits everyone.

Rangers seem to have iced a pretty stale looking roster for this one.

It's kind of a weird lineup. Lacks a lot of the NHL guys but they have every young guy you'd want to see in Chytil, Lias, Howden, Hajek, and Georgiev. Also a lot of parts I have no interest in seeing play at all like McLeod, Holland, Butler, Crawley, etc.

You don’t really need a NHL heavy lineup until the last couple of pre-season games.

Also, a new coach is going to see plenty of the established vets during the regular season. This is his best chance to familiarize himself with the marginal players.

Yeah, I didn't mean weird in that sense. Just weird in that on paper it looks like a weak lineup but there's still a lot that intrigues me and a lot that I couldn't care less about.
