Skjei is exactly the type of defenseman that has a way better reputation around the league than he deserves based on his play and almost certainly should be traded to cash in on that. It's the trifecta of former first, great skater, plays a lot of minutes.

Way too soon to be talking about trading skjei. When KAndre Miller is pushing for first pair mins that’s when you have the convo. Right now you’ve got Staal with one foot out the door. And then a bunch of unproven kids. Hajek is solid but what’s his upside? Rykov we haven’t even seen yet. REuanen I really like but he’s heading back to Europe and is another year away from really challenging for a spot. ROBERTSON is 18. Long way to go there. So skjei as bland a player as he is brings a lot of stability right now. You’re hoping playing with Trouba, playing with top players in 10 93 45/89 more elevates his game. But he’s a big part here over the next couple years.

He’s a 2nd pairing guy asked to play bigger mins than he should frankly thru this mess leading up to this year. So we’ll see how a better team around him helps.

I'm not ready to write Skjei off as less than a #3 or even a #2 just yet. He's 25 and entering his 4th year in the NHL. This is the time when a lot of defensemen really start to hit their stride. It's worth remembering that, while a forward's most productive years tend to come 22-26, a defenseman's best years are usually 25-29.

So I'll just pause on my assessment of him until January or so. I'm not taking too much away from the first pre-season game.

At Skjei's best he's a nothing-special #4 who you really wish someone else was playing over.

Maybe I'm being unfair but Skjei is pretty brain-dead and it stops him from excelling with the puck or in transition to the point where he just, idk exists. And he's not good enough defensively to just exist.

he was real bad the other night.

like he just kept being bad everytime he touched the puck or needed to think and react.

he just seems very uncertain sometimes.
