Yeah, I don`t see how Holden will make it after this game. I`m curious if he will be sent down to Wolfpack, or moved by Jeff G. if he don`t make the team in October.
Anyway it`s just one game, but I`m excited to follow the camp moving closer to the start of the 2017-18 NHL season 5th October vs Avalanche!

I'd imagine we'd make every attempt to move him. No need to put him on waivers when he can be useful.

"A 5'11" newly signed PMD"

Gee I wonder who that could be!!

MH, I admittedly haven't been around much over the summer, so can't speak to PB's previous posts on SK, but it's pretty clear he's speaking specifically of Pionk/ADA, who are both listed at 5'11", both RH PMD, both newly acquired kids (one of whom was signed as an UDFA), both clearly competing for the last spot with Graves, and have both had their play raved about for the last 30+ pages while Graves has gotten a fraction of the notice for playing equally well, if not better (IMO).

I'm genuinely not sure why you'd think he was talking about the 6'0" veteran signed to a 4 x $6.65MM deal who's a lock for the top 4 and didn't play tonight...

Re: the height. Yes, it's only an inch, but he specifically said 5'11" which ADA and Pionk are, and SK is not. It's notable in the context of the argument.

Personally, I think Graves looks NHL ready.

Yeah, I've said this for a long time, Graves is a bit underrated.

And the thing is, when/if he can hold his own in the NHL -- he got two attributes that really will be valuable. First of all he is big and physical, got a little bit of mean streak that will stand out more in a NHL that is getting smaller by the minute. Second of all, his shot is like 90/100. Tremendously hard. And he can use it. Like he can't even remotely get open and use it like Subban/Karlsson/Burns which is what scoring goals from the blueline mostly is about, but he can use it a lot better than most. I.e. one time it, just get it off. Having that firepower from the blueline is just valuable to have. 102 mph. In many games, especially against the best teams, the two teams tends to take each other out. If you play a somewhat perfect D, and have a goalie that is hard to beat in the few 1 on 1 chances you get, its just hard to get things through. But a haubitser from a blueline is hard to take out.

The excitement is anti-climatic when everything is going to be ruined by Vigneault anyway. The hopes and dreams of these rookies are going to be crushed.

I think things are improving on that front. With Gorton willing to unload some of AV's pets (i.e. Girardi and Stepan), and the success of young guys like Miller and Skjei under AV's watch...I think AV is starting to see the light in his younger players. He was content with his rookies tonight and paid them compliments in the Post-Game presser. His attitude towards youth may be evolving. At least I hope it is...

Don't be too critical of AV when Staal is part of the starting 6. He can't be traded right now, and you can't sit that kind of money easily. Just gotta grit your teeth and bear it.

Looking at the D for Wednesday's game. Guys who didn't play---Shattenkirk, Skjei, Smith, Staal, Bereglazov, Day, Pedrie, Gilmour.

I expect Bereglazov and also Pedrie who've they been talking up off and on. Staal's going to be given a shot to defend his position on the team. If Day plays one of Shattenkirk, Skjei, Smith will sit. Gilmour's a long shot to play.

Gilmour. Out of 1091 players to participate in the AHL last season, Gilmore came in dead last on +/- with a -39....even though he tallied 25 points.

His +/- was 5 points worse than Adam Tambellini, who came in 1090th with a -34.

Just an awful defensive display by Gilmour last season. Can't see him going anywhere.

the better these young d play, the more likely the phone rings and a deal can be made to strengthen the middle of the ice.

alot depends on the JTM experiment. if it works, we can hang onto the kids and let them develop further. weve got shatty and smith that both play the right side. theres 1 spot available on that 3rd pair for the next few years

defense is a commodity around the league. a team like colorado is starving for nhl D. we have 2 young R pmds plus graves. i can see a package of one of them and say a marc stale or holden plus a pick or another kid to a team looking for D.

theres a certain centerman available that would sure slot nicely into our 2C. :naughty:

lets hope the kids continue to play well.

I pointed that out a couple times during the season. FWIW most people here hate +/-. That said when it stands out in a particularly negative way as it does with Tambellini and Gilmour it's concerning. Even so Hartford was easily the worst team in the AHL last year.

I pointed him out as a possibility to play on Wednesday knowing last year was a disaster because I'm not sure where the Rangers are on him, how hard he's worked over the summer, whether they've cleaned the slate. For me he's way down on the defender's list though.

This argument is dumb - but if you are gonna correct someone then you should be right.

"Kevin Shattenkirk height" into google

I think Gabriel Fontaine has a real shot at taking that 4C spot this season, maybe not straight out of camp though. He's just really good positionally and very aware defensively, always in the right spot. He's also a good skater with nice size and actually some offensive instincts. I said before the game on twitter that i think NYR fans who don't follow prospects will quickly start to appreciate Fontaines game, i don't think i was wrong.

I'm a bit surprised with the live Lettieri is getting, i thought he was pretty much awful for 40 minutes, had a good 3rd though which makes him a bit hard to judge.

Otherwise i mostly agree with the rest of you guys, loved seeing us play with an actual defense, was a treat. We need to clear the logjam on D, all these young guys look ready to me.

Also, Carey looks good, should probably stay up atleast while Fast is out, then he'll be really important for Wolf Pack.

Thought Anderson, Graves, Nieves, Pionk, and Denagelo all had very good games.

I was very impressed with Graves. He's probably starting the year in Hartford due to numbers but he can play. Made that nice pass to Fontaine and his defensive work was also very good. They need to make a decision with him soon as he's now 22. Not ancient by any means but if he's not in the team's plans, he should be able to play somewhere.

I liked Farnham. He's the perfect 13th forward an because he's a veteran, he's fine with sitting for 7-8 games and then coming in on the 4th line to provide a spark. He's a rat and the Rangers have lacked that ever since Avery left.

Fontaine has a lot of potential as a bottom 6er. He needs more reps and to continue to improve his strength. Not this year but maybe as early as next season if he works on his board play. Kid has NHL wheels and an NHL shot.

Yes, okay.

I too believe that Graves is ready to play. In fact, I think that if he is sent back to the AHL, his play might actually begin to retrogress. Sometimes, players reach a point where they need to be pushed and challenged. They are ready to "move up." Without that extra challenge, they cease to grow. After two full seasons in the AHL, Graves might be at that point. I'm not quite sure what his ceiling his, definitely 3rd pair, maybe second pair, but I do think that he is ready, and ready now.

I'm not ready to declare Bereglazov ready. Based on his pedigree he should be, bit we need to see it first. While I'm expecting him to be fine, he wouldn't be the first successful KHL player to struggle to transition.

This team screwed itself over on the back end. Really was no need to sign Shattenkirk and re-sign Smith, you are only blocking your NHL ready youngsters and spending big amounts of the salary cap on guys who's role will be replaced by someone younger who costs much less.

We'd prefer they take the roles of Holden and Staal, but that wasn't going to happen. This team knew their choice, and they decided against giving these players a chance.

Sometimes it seems like you love unproven players and hate proven players.

When you see the NHL game like it was played last night, some transition plays can be really really fast. But I still think Bereglazov should be ready, or at a point where its more minor adjustments that are ready. But, I could be wrong! Its not hard to misjudge a European adjusting to the NHL.

Those weren't my words, I like how you added the word signed, which I never said, but keep this up. Its not going well for you. You are just being exposed for unnecessarily defending Shattenkirk against a post that had nothing to do with him.
