Why is everyone ****ting on Staal? He was fine last night, and actually looked like he could skate. Hell, he was one of the more aggressive dman in the offensove zone, which was just weird to watch.

I’m not mad about goals 1&3. Goal 1 was McLeod blowing his coverage lane on the backcheck to leave Lappin open. On the McLeod goal, Nieves peeled his stick away from blocking the shooting lane to the slot and opened up the seam for the Devils.

I actually thought our entire defense looked much improved overall and yielded essentially nothing to a Devils team that stacked their top pairings

I thought he was awful. His inability to play the puck led to a goal. I know he’s a vet, but him getting top four minutes ensures this team will be one of the worst in the league.

DeAngelo>Pionk and I'm not as down on Pionk as some.

He didn't get any credit for it, but he dropped a dime on Buchnevich's stick which eventually led to the 3rd goal and that wasn't an easy pass.

Both guys are very talented, not sure why we keep playing this game where we choose one or the other. Coaching staff is not going to play veterans "bevuz v3tzzzz"... the kids are going to get their shots

Buchnevich is lazy. Unless he changes that, he will never be a big time player. Andersson the other hand is always in the right place. His hockey sense is off the charts. Listening to the nonsense about his game on here for months was laughable at best.

DISLIKE... How he is lazy?

preseason stuff same as every other year...vets with locked down roster spots aren't going to go all out from preseason game 1, they're not there to make an impressive showing and win a roster spot, they're working on the system and teammate chemistry and easing into the season to be ready to go when the games actually matter. I'll never really worry that much about how a vet looks in preseason since their only goal is to get comfortable and ready for the real game.s

on the flip side, never get too high on how a prospect or guy fighting for a roster spot looks. it's great that Lias scored twice, but when the real games start and teams are playing faster, more structured games, will he still be able to produce? That's always the catch to good preseason performances...the level of play just isn't regular NHL game level yet.

How did DeAngelo get 27 votes? He was awful as usual. It's amazing how many times this imbecile makes a pass down the center of the ice from behind his net. You would think the dope would have figured out that is a low percentage play that usually results in a turnover. On a side note, another terrible, hack article from Brooks. This time on Andersson. Sorry Larry. Only buffoons are disappointed when an 18 year old doesn't make the NHL. Lord, let this senile clown retire already.

He had one bad turnover in his own end... Other than that he had some beautiful stretch passes, he is probably the best skater on this team, team had some quality shots with him on the ice, and he looked greated QB'ing the PP

It’s probably gonna be 25-30 games at least before we see a noticeable change in play/mindset.

Quinn's gotta coach the AV outta these guys. Don’t happen overnight.

Unfortunately for Staal, it's not AV that ruined him. His injuries have made him a slow, trudging player that can't do anything except poke check. He lost almost every board battle he was in, he didn't make a single memorable outlet pass either. I noticed in game that he defers to his partner VERY often, which means that whatever player is playing with him is doing all the lifting, and unlike the rest of the team, who had better flow as the game went on, Staal looked progressively worse with every passing shift.

If he needs to play, then fine, but he should be 3LD--he was as good as Claesson tonight, and this is the consensus of his play for the last 3 years.

I'll say this, if Quinn does put Staal at 3LD off the bat, then it'll be proof that AV was in fact playing favorites, because nothing Staal has shown since the start of the 15-16 season warrants him getting more than 7 minutes of ice time/night.

oh and re: Buchnevich and looking stronger, he started last season looking stronger along the boards etc as well, but when he had some struggles and the the concussion, he stopped playing as confidently and stopped going into those board battles as aggressively. Key for him and the coaching staff will be to keep that confidence up and keep him engaged

Because when you take all of this in context you see the problem.

In a much improved complete team defense, Staal was "fine"...

and by fine, he played at the level of a #6...

Staal with the puck on his stick is as bad as any D in the league.

He had a solid 1st period, but as you said he got worse as the game went on.

Marc Staal's NHL career is divided into two chapters: 2007-2011, and Post-2011. Unfortunately, the second chapter has been 7 years now.

I feel Marc Staal is fairly serviceable #6 defenseman, and can be masked with a more competent partner.

But the Rangers haven't ever really used Staal 2.0 in that role, so it's somewhat hard to gauge.

Sure if you ignore the context that he was positive rel CF and SCF against the Devil’s top line and overall for the entire game. The one mark against him at ES was McLeod’s f*** up on Lappin’s goal, so what are you really complaining about here?

Can also divide it as two eyes and one eye.

Look for McCleod's new book, My Art of Pacifism, to hit stores soon. Sure to be a NYT bestseller.

It's almost as if teams overslot vets just to avoid the bad contract narrative.

Unfortunately this didn't stop Sather from signing him to a $5.7M AAV contract in 2015. Getting to play with Anton Strålman for a full season tricked many into thinking he was back to pre-concussion/eye injury Staal.

Can also divide it as two eyes and one eye.

The eye injury came in 2013, it was an Eric Staal-induced concussion that occurred in 2011.

Thought ADA had a very good game, he's so smooth with the puck and his ability to carry the puck through the neutral zone is something that I don't think any other defenseman we have can do. His biggest weaknesses are his shot and that he's just not great at defending the blue line, but I don't know how he doesn't make the team.

Too much talent not to give him a spot and see what happens over the course of a season.
