I don't think that makes sense though. Because if he was AHL eligbile, then why was he not sent to the AHL this year?

My understanding as well.

When he was drafted, he was also drafted out of the developmental program and not the Q. He actually was going to go to UND but decided to go to Juniors instead. Since he's 20 next year, he can be assigned to the AHL as long as he doesn't start the season in Juniors.

I agree that I would have preferred to give up the 29th overall pick, but how is it a wasted pick?

Matteau showed signs of being a good player with us this season, there is no reason to think he won't be a good NHL forward.
