Proof is in the Pudding - John Tavares

Yup. Obviously you never know if you'll land a big FA, but Kadri as the second line center and 11M spent on NHL quality defense men would have been nice.
How about Tavares signed for free, Kadri still the 3rd line center, and Marner shipped out for assets or defensive help. There is no conceivable possible scenario where adding a franchise centre isn't the best possible move. Like ever.

I really wish people would stop pretending like JT wasn't our 2nd best player in the CBJ series.

STOP creating a problem where there isn't. You want to blame a bad contract bring up Marner's.

But, but...people will tell you Marner's 0 goals, 4 assists (3 in one miracle game) in 5 games is not too bad...you know, Bo Horvat has 10 goals already...something the $11 million muffin-shot winger can't come close to doing...but assists though. :sarcasm:

Leaf fans should just thank their lucky stars we didn't win the Stamkos sweepstakes. T.B paid him less and he stayed, we are lucky.

I said at the time, "if a guy doesn't want to play in Toronto, we should be happy he didn't come" It takes a special kind of player to face the heat and pressure of playing in Toronto, it seemed Stamkos loved his golf, sunshine and general anonymity playing there. So, best you not come, we want players who want to win.

Now, if you were T.B right now going to the final four, who would you rather have, a constantly injured Stamkos (he was supposed to be ready to play in April or May, it's now September), or, JT who hasn't missed many games and works hard to get back in the lineup and fight with his teammates?

Sometimes it's not all black and white. JT scored 47 goals last year. NOBODY expected that. He was injured this year and still potted 26 goals in 63 games. He should be back on track next year, 40+ goals wouldn't surprise anyone.

To me, Tavares comes across like a Pat LaFontaine, Mats Sundin, etc. They just didn't take that step like Yzerman did.

So far, he leads the team with the worst +/- for the last two playoffs. Jake Gardiner gets royally ripped for his defensive game in the playoffs. In 26 games, Jake was a -9. In less then half of that, Tavares has already climbed to -8. To keep doing the same thing is ludicrous. Tavares needs to score, lead, and defend or be surrounded by different players who can. Anything else will be another playoff failure.

But if offense is the only focus, lets see how he's been scoring. Looking at the totals for the last two playoffs for the Leafs, despite Kadri being suspended after two games, he still has half the 5-on-5 points as Tavares. Tavares has one more 5-on-5 point then Kapanen in that same time period.

UFA or no UFA signing, $11 million is a dominate salary for a player who's not dominating.
The numbers say dominating to me

The team didn’t score. Thats Marners fault is it... i f***** doubt it.

Tavares will score like usual. I hope better than ever. He’s a good captain

Tavares left the islanders when they had an 80 point season.

The leafs had just finished with 105.

The next season, the islanders, without tavares, jumped to 103 points.

The leafs, with tavares, fell to 100.

The islanders even won a playoff series while we lost in the 1st round again.

Then 2019-20, the islanders once again have the better regular season and are a single win away from the conference finals while we lost in the qualifiers.

I do wonder if JT regrets coming here. Seeing your old team outperform your new one must be tough.
Two words bud. Barry Trotz

Doesn't matter how you tell teh story the fact of the matter is:

2 years of JT contract are done' with 5 more to go. I expect JT to not accomplish much in the last 3 yrs of his contract.

So 2 yrs of JT is ruined by abysmal management of the roster with AHL level D-men playing, hoping Freddy to play like prime hasek and expecting miracles on ice.

When babcock had said there will be pain; I did not expect this!

This is self inflicted pain
Sounds like you are setting yourself up so you can complain all the way eh

I will admit, he is doing what he gets paid to do.

But what he is paid to do is pass the puck and he makes too much god damn money to do it.

He certainly took ownership of it...he said it himself that he wasn't engaged in game 1, and that he needed to score...you don't get paid $11 million just to pass the puck around.

History. John Tavares is drafted 1st overall in 2009 by the New York Islanders. Immediately he leads the team in scoring. It's his job. Someone has to. It's what his team needs. Now one of the problems with this situation, Tavares is constantly pushing the offense. If he doesn't, you're keeping your fingers crossed with the rest of the roster that you don't get shut-out. Much like Reilly, the offense in their careers has taken precedence over playing two-way hockey.

The Pudding. John Tavares is a decent offensive player, but he's not outscoring the opposition. And the playoffs, it only gets worst. In the last two seasons, which winds up being only 12 playoff games, he has managed to be tied for 45th overall in the league for even-strength goals against. Bozak who's been played almost three times as many playoff games in that time has only been on for two more then Tavares. Joe Thornton in the same time frame was on the ice for the same amount of goals against, but managed to also be one for 50% more goals for. The goalies are consistently doing worst with Tavares on the ice with 90.8-90.9 save percentages.

Leadership. Did you know the Leafs signed a captain? Got use to there not being one for so long, it made me forget we are suppose to have some leadership on this team now. As a leader, he wouldn't even look at the camera during the End Of Season interview where he spewed a bunch of 'Umms' until the question popped up should the Leafs make changes on the roster. Kind of quick to answer that one. Really think John Tavares should be looking at himself first. The money is on the table, now deliver without excuses.

What to do? It's obvious that John Tavares is a player like Jake Gardiner that teams can focus on to score more then he can. Unlike Gardiner, we're stuck with Tavares and his NTC. The Leafs can ill-afford to play Tavares with a huge puck-handler that despite their best efforts, can be prone to turn the puck over. Move Nylander to the 3rd line, put Hyman on his RW or something. He needs solid defensive wingers to baby-sit his game. Offense suffers, so be it. The game is to score more then the opposition, not just score more.

TL;DR

Remember folks. The same ppl who hate everything the Leafs do are the same ppl who hated on the Raps. The same people who hated the Derozan/Kawhi deal and were the same people celebrating when the Raps won. They play both sides of the fence so pay them no mind.

Ignoring OP's idiotic points, I'm in the camp that loves Tavares but thinks that Dubas signing him was an egregious, irreversible, franchise-crushing mistake. I also don't believe that he's the right leader for this team.

Never really understood why he was made captain over Rielly. Our players thrive off of momentum and energy, and you can't depend on Tavares for those things. He's quiet, reserved, and monotone, and while there's nothing wrong with any of those traits, I think this team would have benefited from following the leadership of someone like Rielly who displays a lot more passion and energy on the ice.
Toews has won 3 cups while having the same characteristics you're saying Tavares has. In fact, his team mates joke about it and call him "Captain Serious" . As much as I love Rielly and wouldn't be opposed to naming his captain, I think you're overselling him a little bit

You wouldn’t like it much if he signed Hall then lol i could see him doing it ha

oh its gonna PISS ME OFF. We don't have the cap; Hall is a known locker room cancer; and we need NHL level defense and depth scoring. Need to make the most of the next 2 seasons before Tavares declines significantly

That’s probably who he is making room for and a Ufa dman. Rookie defense and more fire power
