Yeah Pronman is a good source for when he talks about what real NHL scouts say about players, but he has gone a bit overboard with size. It seems like every couple of years he swings way too far one way, then realizes he's been getting some players wrong, then completely shifts gears. If I'm not mistaken, he was obsessed with smaller players a few years ago
One big issue, aside from rankings, is a lot of his little scouting blurbs are just.. wrong. Like he's not familiar enough with the player to give a qualified opinion. Random example... Sandin-Pellika has "average" puck skills? Like what?
Hey, at least he course corrected and moved Raymond into the Top 10 instead of keeping him 28th behind Laf, Slaf, McTavish, Catton, Wright, Byfield, etc.
I don't think he has actually watched Edvinsson play lol.
Just inside Detroit's own group he has Danielson ahead of Edvinsson. Even if the optimistic outlook on Danielson comes to fruition, he will not be as good or important as Edvinsson already is. He'd have to blow past his expectations.
Sooooo he's already 207 as an 18 year old compared to grown men... That's kinda the point. If he never puts on another pound of muscle then yeah, he's average.
Not typically the case for 18 year old athletes...
True for most 18 year olds. I guess I wonder how much more a 6'1" guy can add on. In fact, I was curious enough to do some research!
What would you consider a meaningful amount of weight above average? I would consider 10 lbs. to be about the minimum meaningful amount of weight, and if I look that up I find that 19 out of the 148 players who have played at least a game this year are 6'1" and at least 217lbs, which is 12.8%. If I look for guys who are at least 220 lbs. at that height, I find 10, which is 6.75% of all 6'1" players. That means adding 3 pounds cuts out half of the 19 guys.
So yeah, it's possible he could end up in the upper 210's, or the 220s, or even in the 230s (there are two 6'1" players in the league that heavy). It's also possible that he's physically matured early and already put on most of his weight, and will only increase it a little bit. Regardless, while I have a lot of disagreements with Pronman and his list, he's not wrong that the player is around NHL average size.
Mason McTavish at 218 lbs
Jack Johnson at 227
David Savard at 234
Ryan O'Reilly at 216
Jon Quick at 220
Nic Deslauriers at 220
Jake Walman at 218
Morgan Reilly at 225
Ian Cole at 238
JT Miller at 218
Hunter Shepard at 218
Vlad Tarasenko at 219
Patrick Brown at 218
Timo Meier at 220
Ryan Shea at 220
Michael Pezzetta at 219
Mathieu Olivier at 226
Alex Romanov at 220
Lucas Condotta at 218
*edit* I realize immediately after doing all this that 201 is the average, not 207. Leaving this up because it's still interesting to me, was a bit of work, and is mostly relevant. 6 lbs matters when I've already increased it by 10, but isn't the end all.

Never really been a fan of Pronman. He really needs to create a methodology and a set of criteria for how he ranks players within individual skill sets and then assign number values to then come out with what should be a more objective scale. It's guys like him that will guarantee that I never get a subscription to The Athletic.

I don’t think GP is a sure-thing. I think he ends up somewhere between Maccelli & Zucc. Has no dog in him at all and he’s going to have to cultivate an ability to win battles against NHL competition. The vision and hands are legit though
This seems like an equally bad assessment in the other direction, unless you're actually claiming Hutson's compete level is generational, because Datsyuk and Kane's puck skills are.
I normally like Pronman's stuff, but a lot of these takes just seem straight up uninformed. As an example, he says defense will never be Luke Hughes' calling card.
That wouldn't have been an outrageous take in his draft year, but by any metric- advanced stat, eye test, or both- Hughes has been better defensively than offensively this year. It seems like on a lot of players he's just married to his pre-draft convictions despite evidence to the contrary.
Yep, there is a lot of inconsistency there. MBN is going to play at 215-225 when he's fully grown and putting him as averaged sized is just more of his cursory silliness.
Seems a bunch of his rankings are designed to do just that. Got a bigger hockey market? Run down some of their prospects to cause a furor and get the clicks.

Which metric should I check?
At 5 on 5 for all NJ Defense he was higher ranked at offense than defense for, didn’t look at others, thought I’d just ask which ones to look at.
