oh man. the guy does not look raw at all. he showing a lot of maturity out there. you have to realize this was a 19 year old that was a top 5 player in the SHL last year. this is not McCann

Your take on this player seems like you're clearly just wanting a young top prospect to make the team without honestly analyzing his play. It's pretty clear he needs to go to Abbotsford for at least awhile. Quite possibly and likely all year until the playoffs.

I forget where but Raty mentioned he was ambidextrous so in that sense hes uniquely suited for that technique.
Aatu Räty might be the right-handed centre the Canucks need (kind of) just your luck article dropped today

there was another player in the nhl who used to do that it was claude giroux until he mastered it and they won at least 54 percent of their faceoffs on their weakside. aka the right circle.

How much of the tracking stuff do you think is fixable and how much do you think is innate? I can see things that go wrong but I don't know any of the technical/teaching stuff in terms of how goalie coaches would go about trying to fix it.

I've had a somewhat schizy view of Silovs. I created his prospect thread after two AHL starts because it looked like he had something (and he does have something). After watching him more often in the AHL I became a little more skeptical of his potential, but when he's played in the NHL he's done better than I would've expected based on my opinion of his AHL play (good, not excellent). I still think he's more likely to become a backup than a competent starter but you know a lot more about goaltending than I do, so I gotta ask: what's your best guess of his future?
I think median outcome is decent starter who shits the bed in the playoffs.

If he fixes some of these things, I'd say top 10 goalie but not as good as Demko or Marky. Those guys have always been great at clear sighted non-screen shots. Talent gives you like 80% of this ability IMO. I just haven't seen evidence that Silovs is going to be as good.

He has excellent athleticism and his skating is good. He scrambles very very well but partly this is because he is a typical Clark draft pick - big body, good athleticism and then Clark puts in the technical base.

Another thing I think he has going for him is confidence and fearlessness. You can see he tries to rise to big stages in the playoffs and internationally. I don't think, however, that he is a particularly calm goalie. As I said, he is a good scrambler which is a huge skill IMO but he is like a lot of goalies like this who create those situations where they have to make a huge save because of a lack of rebound control or sloppy movement. His save selection is suspect at times. He can clean things up quite a bit with more technical work, which he was behind on when drafted and he lost development time in the pandemic.

You look at the things we see, yes he can work on them but he isn't a natural play reader. Honestly I don't think Demko is the greatest at it either, but Silovs's play reading potential is probably lower than Demko's. Just on pure tracking and play reading I think that limits his ceiling. And working on those things at the NHL level is just a lot harder. In some ways, the play is more predictable because the players are more disciplined but the speed of the play is much much fasters. We'll see if he can handle it.

Difference is that Silovs if he's a starter in the Tocchet era won't have to be nearly as good as Demko or Marky. So we could have quite a lot of success with him in net. Thing to watch out for is that young guys who are promoted too early and have clearly exploitable weaknesses often just struggle to keep their heads above water instead of improving at this top level.

i noticed raty was trying to win faceoffs by switching it curve side on the right circle before switching back to his natural handiness. malhotra effect?
Malhotra is getting too much credit for Raty's faceoff prowess, he's been doing this since he arrived even though he was put on wing in the AHL last year

I think Lekk is going to go the the A to work on his strength. Raty is here to stay, at least until Joshua comes back. The opening lineup should probably look like.

Heinen Miller Boeser
Debrusk Petey Sprong
Suter Raty Garland
Hog Bluegar Sherwood
I have a strong feeling when Joshua returns Suter is going to be moved. There will probably be a team who will need a depth center.

Discussing the weak points of a guy's game = knives are out?
None of those goals were what I would call a "bad" goal, two were total screens accompanied by seeing eye shots, one was a flukey broken play where the puck ended up on the forwrd's stick 5 feet in front of the net and one was a confluence of players on his doorstep, Not a terrific night for him to be sure but you can bet the farm that if it were Demko in goal his acolytes would be cutting him slack on every goal...

Demko also doesn't have a growing reputation for being beat by wrist shots though traffic from distance. At this point it's fair to question whether this is an issue for Silovs. He had the same issues in the playoffs last year.

I like Silovs, but certainly needs to get better at tracking pucks through traffic.

Demko has acolytes because he's arguably been a top-5 goalie across the past four years. If Silovs plays to that level, he'll have plenty of acolytes. That's how it works.

I don't really see the point in moving a guy that can play anywhere in your lineup, not hurt you defensively and put up like 25-30 points all for 1.6M

I dont want to see him in the top-6 but he's a much better option in the bottom-6 than guys like Aman and PDG.

"Arguably" is a good word; you could say that Silovs arguably carried this team to within a goal of the conference finals couldn't you? I agree that Demko has been a terrific goalie for us when he has been healthy but he is clearly past his best before date and my guess is that this is his last year here. I'm high on Silovs because he seems to me to be the best of the rest not only in his potential but in his past performance. So far I haven't seen any reason to doubt that he's the real deal but it sure seems to me that his every move is studied in detail by some with an eye for finding fault with it which irritates me; he's still a bit of a newb and he's not going to be perfect. I'll bet he's exciting to watch as our #1 if that's the case to start the year.
