I think but for Gru being quite likeable as a player and for the fact that he when he “gets hot” for 4 or 5 games a year he resembles Patrick Roy, there would be a lot more chatter leaguewide about what an abysmal signing that’s been.
I remember when he signed. It wasn’t the money, but the term. I’ll never understand committing to a guy for that long, who at no point had been elite for consecutive seasons, especially when you’re building from the ground up. It was an albatross contract from the moment pen hit paper,

This was a goalie who had never had a season under a 0.915 SV% since he started in the league. Yes, the term was always a risk but I don't think it was an albatross contract during signing.

I don't think any of us expected him to have 3 straight sub 0.900 SV% seasons in a row.

Fair point.

Looking back on it, my befuddlement at the time was more that I couldn't tell what the club was trying to do. Their choices were so in between. But if Colorado gave him that deal I wouldn't have thought it foolish.

Yeah, you’re right. I went back and checked his stats. I just never thought of him as elite. Maybe he was, and it’s my recency bias showing.

I don't think many of us will be sad if he is gone. Not many options, though. He has a 10 team NTC, has 2 more years at 5.9M AAV and has a sub 0.900SV% over the last 3 seasons. He will either require a massive sweetener or pulling of a 3-team trade for 2 x 50% retention. The other option ofcourse is the buyout.
Yeah pretty much all of us said that was a crappy contract when he was signed. Too much $$$ and too long. I understand the reasoning of trying to lock up that position when you’re an expansion team but it’s a bad contract.

Hoping Joey has a great year and Gru will be solid when he starts.
