I think we'll see the bottom 6 fairly quickly go from...

Janmark-Henrique-Brown
Podkolzin-Ryan-Perry

To...
Podz-Henrique-Brown/Perry
Janmark-Philp-Brown/Perry

And eventually...
Podz-Henrique-Brown/Kane
Janmark-Philp-Brown/Kane

With the natural transition being Podz winning Janmark's spot, then Philp taking Ryan's job, and finally Kane taking Perry's spot.
The main question with that set up is do you want to keep Janmark/Brown together and have Pod stapled to Perry so he gets all the offensive mentorship; or do you run Henrique-Brown and Janmark-Philp so you get two quality defensive duos in the bottom 6?

I think you’re probably right on the players.

I’d be surprised if Podkolzin-Ryan-Perry isn’t the fourth line on starting night. I could see Philp coming up a month or two before the deadline.

As much as I’d like to see more youth on the fourth line, I just don’t see it happening unless theres an injury. Someone like Lavoie probably has to play like Podkolzin if he wants to make it but its not really his game.

Yeah, Brown said it best on GYB. Lavoie needs to play with more energy if he's going to play on the 4th line. The one timer was beautiful, but he isn't going to be getting many of those in the NHL.

Plenty of games left! I'm excited for some of these battles and to see everyone against actual NHL players.

Wouldn’t mind a Podkolzin-Philp-Lavoie fourth line to be honest
I still don't like Lavoie, his best asset is his shot, but I feel like he is looking for it too much, neglecting supporting the play more and he should be more actively engaged in the dirty areas cause of his size. Kind of like Frk and Perlini who had a tremendous shots I don't think Lavoie is touching enough areas in the game to justify an NHL spot.

We'll see on Philp, I like him a lot, but seems more like a late season call up given the amount of time he missed.

I liked Podkolzin's game he was getting his stick in the passing lanes, was aggressive, and I think he can help a line drive possession, but the element I didn't like is I've seen a bit too much blind hope centering passes out of him, sometimes they click, but it's not a foundation for consistent offense.

Only saw bits and pieces but Philp continues to intrigue me. Size, can skate pretty well and has some sneaky good skill. I know he's likely not an option the first half of the season as he adjusts to hockey again but I could see him being a real option after the New Year and eliminating that need going into the deadline.

Was there live:
Liked Podz, Savoie, O'Reilly, Lavoie, Philp, and Emberson.

Very iffy about Josh Brown. Not sure his puck handling and movement is strong enough to be in the NHL.
Considering that 2/3 of the right side D was Ceci and Desharnais last season, I'm thinking Brown could fill that role if he plays merely acceptable defense.
I can already see that Emberson moves the puck better than those two.

i think the plan is to keep him around derek ryan as long as possible as thats the player he will become and probably be better at it, eventually

Lavoie's a tough one to forecast, as he doesn't really have a clear spot. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Injuries happen, and rather than suddenly being forced to rush Savoie or Jarventie back from injury, having Lavoie on deck means someone going down won't create a cascade effect down the lineup.

As for the 4th line, youth would be nice, but honestly I like the idea of Janmark-Philp-Perry. Good size, some bite, plus defensive accruement. I could also see Lavoie and Perry being a decent 4th line combo if you can get some speed at centre.

I don’t mind rotating Perry and Lavoie in. Not convinced that Perry is an everyday player and would allow Lavoie to get some reps.

But also not sure Ryan is an everyday player either. If going to run a 13F, I think having another C like Hamblin, Pederson, Philp, etc makes sense. With both Perry/Ryan, unfortunately I just don’t think theres a spot for Lavoie unless there is an injury. We will see.

With Kane out for the foreseeable future I think there is an excellent opportunity to give Lavoie some meaningful minutes with decent offensive players to see what he can do. If they can put him in a position to show well they could potentially create a bit of value in him as a trade chip in the second half of the season.

At 37 and 39, neither Ryan or Perry can/should be everyday players. The team more or less has to run a 13th forward, I don't think it's debatable.

On this note what I think will happen with Podkolzin on the 3rd line is you get the option to run Janmark at centre. While I'm not sold it's an actual solution (as Janmark sucks at faceoffs), I don't mind the idea of something like this for a few games around the quarter mark of the season.

Podz-Henrique-Brown
Lavoie-Janmark-Perry

Still I think you'd get more value running guys like Hamblin, Philp, and even Grubbe on the 4th line., vs. trying to inject some offence onto it.

And he is a right shot center. That automatically pushes him up the depth chart. He won most of his faceoffs yesterday. We have needed that for years. Ryan is just too small for that position. He's better suited for RW and taking the odd faceoff. Not a full time center.

Perlini pretty much confirmed this in his "What is Main Camp Like?" video (posted in the YouTube thread). According to him, about the only cost covered for the players during camp is the uniform, hotel, and meals...possibly transportation too.
Honestly, that’s all a person needs. They’re there to make a team!

I agree but thats why I think the 13F will be someone who can be a C

I'm personally on the skeptical boat with Brown but I guess we'll see what happens.

Actually just the opposite. It is the game he was playing in Vancouver but he was suppose to be a high-skill guy. No one questioned his work ethic or his willingness to go to the tough areas.
The knock on him in Vancouver was not going to the areas, skating by the scoring areas, and obviously not scoring. I mean its the reason he's here. To say it didn't work out in Vancouver is understatement and he even got ample chances on topline.

He was a prime candidate waiver player who we got for next to nothing.

I wasn't able to watch last night, but curious how strong the stream was.

Were we at least able to get a stream of early 2010's quality, or were we subject to 1998 stream quality like year's past?

Idk if that's the case tbh, I think the knock was more finish and beef with Tocchet. I think the other factor there is that the Canucks just kind of managed assets poorly and traded for or signed a bunch of guys that pushed him out of a spot (Mikheyev, Joshua, Garland, Sutter, Blueger).

Say what you will about the NHL's real time stats, but Podkolzin has lead the Canucks in Hits for, hits taken, and blocked shots per 60 are among the highest on the Canucks for his entire tenure - doesn't speak to a lack of willingness to go to hard areas.

His bed with Tocchet is strange to me, he does kind of seem like a Tocchet guy, so... That's a red flag to me. But we'll see how she goes.

I don't get the player. Anytime I watched he's invisible and a passenger. Didn't get to see the game yesterday.

To me it was a terrible pick and several other players including Boldy were available. Nucks drafted this guy in a topten and ended up being waiver material.

If Podz had any kind of consistent Jam Tochet would have liked him. Its the one thing about the Canucks is that Tochet had most of the players ready to gun for him. Seemed like the whole club became more physical. But in the end Podz was drafted to score and he doesn't score.

We'll see but I don't get the hype.

Seen too many players by now that are all "If only I could get my confidence up" When I hear this from players now its become a red flag.

agree, if anything he will be Foegle'ish, some days a physical force and others awful, for the price tag its what you get, wish they would have just signed holloway before he got the offersheet

They tried. Holloway wanted to wait until the off season. At which point they tried again by using reasonable comparables.

Unfortunately St. Louis wanted to pay twice what he should be making.

How pathetic that they have to around ripping down streams when they don't offer one themselves. Kind of shitty. Explains why I couldn't get a working stream anywhere. I mean this is first preseason game. Imagine them shutting down streams. lol
Thankfully the Jets nhl site had it streaming for free.

Hard to take away really much from a ragged scrimmage game without high end NHL talent. I did think that Podkolzin had a solid two way game from what I saw. He has opportunity to reframe his game as a high energy physical two way bottom six here without necessarily the pressure to be a big producer per draft expectation in Vancouver.

Per your point, on the OT goal he made a great hit to turn the puck over, got on his horse to give a pass option on the rush up ice. But really think you want him to crash net front and stop vs curl away from the net and out of blue paint. Bit of a weak goal by Dineen. I wonder abit about his processor ability but still think Podkolzin will work his way onto the 3W spot over time.

Also need more talk about that sick defensive zone outlet from Savoie to Podkolzin that created the own zone breakout on the OT winner.
