WJC: predictions (will be held in the summer)

Not sure if anyone else feels this way but there seems to be a determined effort on TSN to ignore the U20 and U18 in terms of coverage. As well, I don't think I've ever seen the Hockey Canada website so messed up.

I'm not downgrading the seriousness of the whole situation, heads need to role at Hockey Canada, a government committee needs to police their actives for a probationary period but we have many kids playing in the tournaments of their lives. They shouldn't be jeld responsible for the failures of Hockey Canada or the potential disgusting acts of others.

If Latvia finishes 4th over us we need to clean cabinet and fire anyone who works with the U20 program

I've always found the HC site to be garbage.

As for TSN/Hockey Canada, we need to accept this tournament will be done on the cheap. In 4 months, if they continue with the Christmas edition, then we can beef.

Latvia beat Germany in their pre-tourney game. And without the big 3 from 2022, I feel like there is a legit possibility for an upset.

The World Juniors is my favourite hockey of the year, period. I can't describe my excitement/nostalgia for it every single year, and it's an integral part of the Christmas season. However, I have barely paid any attention to it at all this summer. With it not being at Christmas, no team Russia, a larger amount of top players not attending, I just can't seem to get excited for it. December 26 - January 5th I know what days I am watching hockey with nothing else to do, and when the playoffs start, etc. I think that plays into it as well.

That's fair. Hopefully, you will find time to enjoy this tournament - I know I will.

There's no way Slovakia is gonna lose vs Latvia. I could actually see Finland lose vs the Czechs and Slovaks purely because their goalies look suspect. Same goes for USA, Germany and Austria in group A. Sebastian Wraneschitz has put in some crazy efforts in international games already but at club level he seems to have all sorts of issues keeping things together. I'd really like Switzerland to finish last because all of the SIHF coaches are grade a morons should get fired asap but I fear Patenaude may be far better than everything group A has to offer in terms of goaltending besides Clang and Wallstedt. I doubt anybody is gonna beat Sweden with that goalie tandem. In those tournaments, goaltending is everything and more.

Germany’s roster is overrated and has been since the big three in 2020. I have biases so out of hope I put them third, but if I’m being completely honest, I can see Germany losing out to both Switzerland and Austria.

If Slovakia had Slafkovsky, Mesar and Nemec, I could see them medaling but alas, with those guys out it’s a pretty weak roster.

I think in games of the German speakers, goaltending is gonna be important. I don't think the German goalies are any good but they're far better than the Swiss or Austrian backups. So the question is if Wraneschitz is gonna continue his great international play and if the Swiss idiot coaches are gonna be smart enough to play Patenaude. If not, Germany probably is gonna finish 3rd. Otherwise, if Switzerland and Austria get superior goaltending, it will be difficult for Germany and games could be more interesting.

Slovakia is still much better than Latvia and Simon Latkoczy was standing on his head in last seasons WJC20 already. If he plays like that again, the Slovaks are gonna be tough to beat.

My big prediction is that neither the two NA teams win it. I think both teams look pretty weak this edition. Primed for like a Finland win. Maybe Sweden.

Canada has the best team but Sweden has the best goalies. So it could be interesting. Finland I don't think will get the goaltending necessary to compete with the top teams. Don't sleep on the Czechs if Bednar is hot.

Canada almost always will have the best players, but I look at that team and think it looks pretty weak for a Canada team.

I'm going to predict a Sweden win, not based on logic but just based on how it would be funny for Sweden to win the tournament for only the second time since 1982 in such bizarre circumstances, with many teams missing players and Russia not even present. I also don't think that Canada or USA seem particularly good, though it remains a four horse race.

I feel pretty good about this Canadian edition, TBH - even with the huge player losses.

I've seen Sweden twice and they may have the greatest goalie in the world, but they don't look that great - I'll say that and they'll light the tournament on fire the rest of the way.

That defense is probably the worst Canadian defense I’ve ever seen. The forward group is weaker than usual. Goalie could go either way. If Cossa is really the starter, it could work but I’d be equally worried that it won’t work.

Well so far Finland. USA, Czechia have impressed. Not really impressed by Canada against the latvians, lots of help from the refs for the canadian boys.

Regarding Sweden, just look how awful we where against the Swiss, we are not beating Germany and USA.
