In five years? We're at a lull until the cup finals start. Nothing else is happening so what the hell. Pick your Conference finalists in five years
West:
Minnesota: I just see them retooling on the fly. Wallstedt should be a legit 1, and they have the young talent in Yurok and Rossi and Boldy not to mention KK will only be 32.
Vancouver Canucks: Dunno, they just seem like they have a team that will age well. Hughes and EP40 will still be under 30, They have some nice prospects and Demko/Sivlovs is still a good young combination
East:
Montreal: I think they've done a nice job stockpiling talent at all the right positions and if Fowler can be a legit 1 then good on them, Caufield, Slaf and Suzuki still in their mid to late 20s and they have some great D-prospects in the system who should be core pieces in 5 years (Hutson, Rein, Mallioux,
New Jersey: Great mix already and 5 years of seasoning for the super young kids like Mercer, Hughes and Nemec will be like Colorado acouple years back. Goaltending is always gonna be an issue until it isn't, but at worst, Shmid, Daws, Brennan couple be at least serviceable and still under the age of 30.
I mean what will the Rangers have? Igor will be 34, Planarian will be late 30s, even Fox will be early 30s.Utah
Chicago
NYR
Montreal
Total shots in the dark.
I mean no disrespect with this, but it’s weird to see some people picking the Oilers. Assuming they keep McDavid and Draisaitl, those guys will be in their early 30s by then. I’m sure they’ll be good, but their peak is now and I don’t see shocking levels of young talent with them.
(FWIW: wouldn’t pick the Canucks either. JT Miller is unlikely to be who he is by then and I wonder what that’ll mean for the team.)
Picked the Rangers because I feel like the city at some point will be the most likely place to draw key free agents to make a great team. Again though: an absolute shot in the dark.I mean what will the Rangers have? Igor will be 34, Planarian will be late 30s, even Fox will be early 30s.
Change Quebec-Hamilton to Atlanta-Jacksonville and I'd agree with you.Utah-Houston
Quebec-Hamilton
Dallas will get knocked out by Nashville.West:
Dallas:
Prime Johnston, Stankoven, Bourque, Harley, Bichsel
Heiskanen, Robertson, Hintz, Oettinger etc all not terribly old
Utah:
I really like their prospects and what they're building there. Give them 5 years, I think they could make it
HM: Colorado. MacKinnon + Makar will still be around
East:
Buffalo: At some point all these high end draft picks are really gonna add up
New Jersey
HM: Ottawa
Chicago is relegated to the AHL to make room for team #36; the Memphis Riverboat Gamblers.Chicago wins the Cup in 2029.
Okay, full disclosure, I have no idea. Just guessing that by then even a semi-competent GM will be smart enough to build the blocks around Bedard. If the Hawks won a Cup in 2010 three years after getting the 1st overall pick, then why not the current Hawks 6 years after?
