Surprised Kane’s only doing a 1-year deal, but then I’m not. They can hide a bunch of bonus money in the contract, attached to extremely low expectations aka Bergeron.
Guess he also wants to weigh his options every off-season and/or deadline.
The good thing for Detroit is, if he’s as productive as last year and they struggle this year, they’ll get a nice piece for him in return. Won’t be anything crazy, but they will get at least what Chicago got.. 2nd and a 4th with the upgrade on the pick to a 1st if the team makes a conference final. If he leaves the process open to 2-3 teams, they’ll get more.
It’s Kane though. They won’t move him unless he wants to move.
Look, Kane has it good in Detroit. His young family is there with Debrincat’s young family. Kids are the same age, and they’re always together. That’s a big thing for a player to have a support system when you have little ones and you’re on the road as much as they are, with no family in town. Hell, I’d even suggest his partner has told him that’s where she’d rather stay.
Those types of things matter when you have little ones. He goes somewhere else, she has to pick up and move again, with no support system in place. It’s one of the reasons he chose Detroit last fall.
