No one fits the definition of aging vet better than Derek Ryan.

Trotz we have your man. And his character will be the KEY to unlocking Marchie and Stamkos potential.

Not that i think Parssinen is really anything to write home about, but it's very much looking like hiring a coach to just take over as GM was in fact, a bad idea with pretty dire consequences.

Which is interesting since Trotz was a really good coach and if somebody told me he was "a smart hockey man", as the cliche goes, I would have totally believed it. It turns out, however, he is truly clueless at this GMing thing.

I would go as far as maybe Washington knew what they were doing when they let him go. The man does not understand much about actually developing the roster. We can also remind ourselves Nashville didn't have real 1st line forwards for what seemed like decades at the time during his HC tenure.

It's not even really that uncommon for a good "coach" to simply not have the right mindset for "management". I think Trotz is showing to be a prime example of that, where his "smart hockey man" abilities are much more on the "micro" scale. The in-game minutia and details. Working with what they're given by the GM. Not the "macro" scale it takes to really build out a coherent roster.

Multiple things to unpack here. Poile was great at drafting good forwards, not great or elite. In his entire tenure as a GM, the best forwards he drafted for the Caps were Gartner, Allison and Bondra and for the Preds I'd say Legwand, Hartnell, Fiala, Radulov, Erat and Craig Smith. Not a great legacy for a guy calling the shots for close to 40 years.

People often remark, he never had any top 3 picks. Teams have found great to elite players outside of the top 5 picks all the way outside of the first round. Does it happen often, not terribly but it does happen and you'd think he'd find a gem there. It's odd because he found Josi and Weber in round 2, Saros in round 4 and Rinne in round 8 so he has found elite talent in later rounds, has never been a forward.

The best centers Trotz had were Arnott, Ribeiro, Fisher and Legwand and for a very short time, a very worn down Forsberg. Outside of Forsberg, the rest were low level 1Cs and 2Cs, not guys you build your team around.

Once Trotz was gone, Poile traded for Johansen and Turris and later signed Duchene as a FA. Turris and Duchene were 3OA and Johansen was a 4OA pick. Unfortunately, Duchene was more of a winger for the Preds and the other two were once again, low level 1Cs.

Trotz has said he's needing to get a 1C. He may very well be heading towards one if the season continues as it has. Two problems, Brunette is not helping the kids grow or see if they'll be long term fits. The other worry is there is a very good D prospect whom I terrified the Preds will take instead of the center prospects.

As a long time fan, if they had gone with the rebuild model, I'd have patience right now. The fact that we went out and spent big money in FA and it's failing miserably while also playing AHL tweener talents instead of the young talent we have is frustrating. Christmas cannot get here soon enough and I hope the team goes on another losing streak to finally rid ourselves of a coach who does not adapt well.

The fact that they're even considering moving Parssinen is mind blowing and makes me shake my head in disbelief.

I've never seen a team so keen on trading all their home grown talent. Trotz must really not like the team's drafting philosophy of the last several years.

I mean I can kind of see what he's going for, getting rid of Poile's guys, but they are throwing away talent for nothing we should at least he getting assets from them.

Yeah this screams Nick Robertson to me.
Not old enough for Trotz, does he even go out of position to take an unnecessary hit?
