Laf just needs to mature a bit. Another year or so.

These kids will never be ppg players without power play time. So anything close to 50 pts almost exclusively at 5v5 is very good. Laf scored 20 goals last year at even strength as a 20 year old. However in 3 or 4 Kreider or Panarin or both will be gone. Things will change and these kids will be on the PP when they’re 24 25 years old. They’ll be top guys eventually. Both chytil and Kakko were looked at as busts when they were 20 21.
Right, but at least you saw the flashes with those two. I just don't see high end skill with Lafreniere at this level.

Isn't he like 6 months removed from a 19 even strength goal season at 20 years old? I'd call that a decent flash. He's having a rough start this year.

Can one of you brainiacs please find a list of players who scored 19 goals at even strength in a season before they turned 21?

Trocheck hit a post and leapt in the air to stop a goal
Goat did a Stromer
Numerous in close high quality shots
Hot Goalie
we will be fine
Oh PS..Filip is a baby Jagr
Igor will be Igor again
KAM will find his game
Vesey is fine as top 6 rw
we will make the playoffs
Debbies will lose over 5 in a row shortly
The team loves GG
we will win at least 1 rd this postseason and no one will want to play us
Hayek looked better than Mac Truck finally
it may be better to be middle of the road instead of going for 1st overall so as to keep both 1st rders
2 needs... finisher aka Vatrano...large 2LD type
lets remember the timetable..last year was an aberration..
Lets trap some Yotes tonight

It's not ridiculous. It's a coaching and management change ie a vision change that brought Montreal's kids to life.

I can dig up a quote where I said Caufield needed a better coach than the dino clowns the Habs had under Bergevin.

The Rangers are similar to the Bergevin Habs, institutionally rigid and uncreative. The Habs realized their mistake and brought in Gorton, who learnt from his mistakes as a Ranger GM. He in turn brought in St. Louis specifically to develop the kids and create an environment where they can flourish.
that's my biggest issue. I love Gallant as a leader and person. Do not think he can coach modern day hockey.

It's sad to see Laffy right now

The question is, are we willing to potentially put the team in a short term pickle for the sake of developing the youngsters?

I’m not sure a Dolan-owned team will ever make the correct decision on that one
I don't think it's a short term pickle.

A proper coaching staff gets the team working as a unit as well as developing the kids. Right now, we have neither.

I just flat out do not understand how anyone can watch last night's game and have much negative to say about the NYR.
did you watch them shoot? It's the same issue.

Take away the cross ice pass and the team short circuits. They are lazy in creating... as in they think they're sneaky looking for the cross ice pass but everyone and their mother knows it's coming. Players stop skating. There's no passing/shooting lanes and no one does anything about it.

There absolutely is more to get out of these kids. They need the ice time in crucial situations to get their finishing confidence up to par, and a solid base in practice/tactics. It was good to see PP2 hold the puck low and attempt something different than the Tuba Blast, baby steps in the right direction even if it didn't work this time.

(e: also it's typical of the current state of affairs that the one shot against ended up in the net after a NYR defensive breakdown...)

Yeah hopefully he’ll be our Josh Bailey - a token 3rd liner organizational favorite… ala Brett Gardner .

To be fair we were saying Chytil is a bust the loudest last season.
Which isn't surprising at all since this type of talk always happens whenever a player is going through the worst shooting% of their career. The opposite happens whenever a player goes on a shooting% tear like William Karlsson shot ~24% his first year in Vegas or Hagel last year when he was shooting like 22% before being traded to Tampa. Now Laf's under the microscope because he's shooting 5.7%, despite it really just being variance

I get you, but time and time again the vets have shown that they don't figure things out. They continually force things the way they how to do them. And they wait until 3 minutes to go to get desperate.
Don’t know what to tell you if your view is as stated “time and time again the vets have shown that they don't figure things out” is a direct reference to one of the best PP units in the whole NHL for last few seasons.

At least the Rangers would get something decent to good if they trade him sooner rather than later. It'd be so on brand to wait a year or two too long and get another "change of scenery" prospect for him or just let him go for nothing.
This is nonsense. He scored 20 goals last year and was good in the playoffs at the ripe old age of 20. He just turned 21 and has been playing on his off wing. Maybe that has to do with his regression so far this year. People were giving up on Chytil and Kakko not too long ago. Laf is going to be a good one. How good remains to be seen but giving up on him right now is a huge mistake.

I’m not claiming the answer to this team winning games this season is moving Kakko and Lafreniere to the power play. I’m saying the answer to their development is. Unfortunately, those two things are at odds. It’s almost as if rebuilding and trying to win now doesn’t mix. Shocker.

…..
The bolded is not true - as long as the Kids line is first on the ice after PP - ie getting their minutes their development should be fine. Unless by “development” you simply mean getting to 70-90 point season production. Then read @Kovalev27 post re. expectations for points.
