News Article: Powers: Blackhawks doing homework on Schaefer

Has anyone’s stock rose up this much after an injury? Dude barely did anything yet he should go 1st.

You're not getting a prospect like Tij for KK unless there's some sort of risk involved like this, unfortunately
While I’m not a big fan of Korchinski, I think people here are undervaluing him compared to what another organization/GM would. He’s got skills and a couple of years of development…further along the path towards respectable young experienced NHL dman, expected to continue improving, not expected to make a big impact for another 2-4 years. A defenseman prospect on the cusp like him is more difficult to find than a winger like Iginla. It’s not easy to develop quality dmen, yet recently (and surprisingly) the Hawks have been doing just that.

KK for Iginla would be considered a hockey trade for each organization if one has a surplus of dmen and the other has a surplus of forwards in their respective prospect pools, and the timelines fit.

He was, by far and away, the best Canadian defenceman as a draft eligible player for the world junior team in the games he played. That is incredibly rare.
Considering Canada was cheeks that tournament that isn’t the glowing endorsement you think it is.

Not all hip surgeries are the same. Nazar’s “hip” surgery was for a sports hernia, which doesn’t involve the hip joint at all. Wasn’t able to find out what type of surgery Iginla had, but if it involves the actual hip joint that’s a much more serious surgery.
Nazar’s surgery was a hip flexor I thought. Not a sports hernia.

Don’t remember where I heard sports hernia, but that was my understanding. I have never heard anything about it being a hip flexor (which would be a pretty rare surgery and also does not involve entering the hip joint).

Did you watch him play?
Obviously not.

Obviously did not see Schaefer play at the U18’s in the summer either or watched him in the OHL as he transitioned from being the 1st OA pick by Erie into a dominant d-man in a relatively short amount of time.

All this kid has done is meet every challenge head on and exceed expectations at every level, all while assuming a leadership role.

To say “dude barely did anything” just screams ignorance and clearly illustrates you are commenting on a player you know nothing about.

Pronman has new rankings out and Schaefer is number one on his list, but also notes “There are a handful of very exciting players at the top although not one prospect I would qualify as a special type.”

He puts Schaefer in his tier 1, but has that listed as “nhl all-star” which was his tier 3 for last year’s draft. He also has Schaefer a notch lower than where he had Levshunov last May.

Again..Hagens is iver-rated...Another smurf at 5'10.5 ...privikeged situation...played with usntdp =like a junior all-star team ..not a normal junuor team...but worse pkaysxat Boston College with super wingers Leonard and Perrault ..naturally will pick up assists as they score goals. Should have more goals hinself of their feeds but has relatively few goals compared to assists.

Would prefer to have seen him carry a normal junior team as thecsilo "go to guy" big star 1C..

Also do notvthink he is that great at faceoffs.

Conclusion ..not saying hecwill bust..just that the issues I have with him "privileged" situation, size, faceoffs make him I think the wrong fit ..we have a plethora of undersized skilled forwards...Bedard and Nazar already here..Lardis,Kantserov,Moore ,Thompson, coning..NOTanotger 5'19.5 C who is not going to win enough draws
.
Misa a better fit if we draftca Center..hevis goodxat draws (near 55%) and takes a lot of draws.. He can be used alk situation..hevis 6'1 185 and can fill out more..He is faster than Hagens.. I think he will be a better goal scorer than Hagens ..

I am not saying Hagens will bust ..but I do nonetheless think hecwilk equal super shrimp Jack Hughes ..

I just think he is the wrong fit for what Hawksvneed at 2C which is a bigger faster equally good goal Scorer /playmaker and goidx2 way player with skills to be even more productive than Bedard in driving a line with the bonus of good faceoff ability.

So if Hawks do not get Schaefer by landing the #1, the very next target is to take Misa...no question in my mind.

I get tge but Hagens playing at higher level than juniors=NCAA.but he is on the #1team at that level and nobody in colkege hockey pkays with the talent that he has on hiscwings(Leonard and Oerraukt(..so therecAre caveats to ranking Hagens that high..in myopinion.

Hagens is no Celebrini in freshman production and Cekebrini had to basically solo star hiscteam in his freshman lone season in college hockey..I have to discount Hagens on issues...enough to have concerns if he translates his privileged situational history to that impactful a pro career in the NHL..

I am not of course a professional scout ..justcsaying enough issues with Hagens as best fit for Hawkssituation to say that if we draft at #2 he is not my target there..

Hagens is a good little player ..but I do not think he is so clearly above Misa that Hawks havevto take him at #2 for what we need as a 1C talent playing 2C for us...I just see a better fit with Misa.

Besides..if keep emphasizing speed,Misa has elite speed...hevjustvticks more boxes for what Hawks need if we lose out on Schaefer at #1.
MAYBE other teansvon the Hagens bandwagon ..so if Hawks draft at #3 or worst case #4 we still get Misa...Possible of SJ pushed down 1 spot they take Nartinevat #2 because they already have 2 youngC's in Celebrini and Smith.
If Hawksin worst case draft#4, might still get Misa but if choice left is Hagens ,I would take Caleb Desnoyers at#4 notcHagebs...orxI would trade down 1 or 2 spots if a team felt Hageb waxa best fit for their situation and they cannot lose the chance to draft him. WE still then get Desnoyers or Frondell which would also be better fits for our 2C..

But at the same time HF50, the USNTDP "best forward" high pick has a pretty good track record (Smith, Cooley, Beniers, J. Hughes). And it's not like kids like Eiserman, Stiga, Plante were really on his level at the progam.

Just don't see that as a reason to knock him.

Oh! Is that what 50 was doing, knocking Hagens? I was waiting for the translator to tell me what he said.

I get where Fiddy's coming from.
Hagens, one of my favorite prospects for the 2025 draft, hasn't shown a whole lotta growth in his game this year. With Hagens being one of the oldest players for the draft it was expected that the younger guys would make up a bit of ground on him as they age. Well not only did Schaefer and Misa make up ground this year but I fear they both have surpassed Hagens and also Martone for that matter. After strong 2024 U18's both Hagens and Martone had statistically weak 2025 WJC's. Martone's 2024/25 regular season production has been very good in the OHL but Hagens' NCAA production hasn't been anything to write home about up to this point.

If I'm drafting top 3 I want Schaefer, Misa then Martone in that order. I'm considering Hagens if we're drafting 4th or later. Things can certainly change by seasons end however, still a bit of runway left before the draft and its plenty enough time for Hagens to turn his season around.

Desnoyers has been nothing but great everytime I've seen him. He's also in consideration if we're selecting top 4 as his stock has been steadily rising since that strong 2024 U18's where he came in as an injury replacement and fit right in on the first line with McKenna and Martone. Desnoyers looked like the second best player on the ice in the final when they captured the gold. Only McKenna had outshown him.
The way our young guys are performing, it wouldn't surprise me if we string more than a few wins together between now and season's end, and fall out of the top 4 picks.

just reading the board guys convinced me that Misa is probably the best pick for us (if Schafer is gone). also he has exceptional status which is nice,
