should Cozens really return that much more than Kakko? I mean I guess if you think so then you dangle Toronto 1st pls whatever players/prospects from old regime are left like Reichel, Allan, EDM, Kaiser, Kurashev, etc

Difference is Cozens is signed for 5 more seasons after this one.

Kakko could theoretically force arbitration and then be UFA in a year.

According to Friedman, there’s a ton of interest in Murphy, lots of scouts at the game last night along with continued interest in Donato and Jones.

If I’m Davidson, price for Murphy is a 2026 first.

Yes no reason to rush a trade since can bring him into the offseason and back for next year if nobody is budging.

2026 1st for Murphy @ 50 %

Now that Heiskanen is injured Blackhawks throw Seth Jones to Dallas (20% retained) with Ryan Donato for Lian Bischel, Mavrik Bourque and Matt Dumba?

I have no faith at all that Murphys groin injury won't re-appear.

I hope some NHL GM doesn't share my skepticism.

So we are going to retain 9.5 million over the next 5 years so we can grab a middling LHD and a 5'10 forward prospect (like the 2 things we simply do not need when you look at the prospect pool) and take back a negative contract player like Dumba as the cherry on top?

If we are taking another year of Dumba back, that is plenty of "retention" and the Stars can figure out how to make Jones full salary work in 2 Summers when the cap is 20 million per higher. Beyond that, I want an actual useful piece that fits a need.

I don’t think there is a snowball’s chance in hell that Murphy returns a 2026 1st round pick, perhaps a late 2025 1st if the the Hawks retain 50%. In my opinion I just don’t think he is that good and his injury history presents other questions that could cause teams to look elsewhere.

With respect to Jones, there is no way I would be tying up a retention spot for 5 years. As others have mentioned, with the cap going up significantly over the next few years the narrative around Jones and his contract is going to change. A RHD who puts up points and eats 25 minutes a game is still a very valuable asset and will be easy to move without retention should the Hawks choose to do so.

funny how I commented Donato and Murphy retained should snag a 1st and universally hated for it..now someone else posts same thing and everyone likes it...interesting...just don't comment on KD being a complete dipshit of a GM and people will agree with your posts

Do you want a cookie?

Hawks have needs everywhere.
Nope....pretty sure we have LHD and smallish forwards covered pretty well in the prospect pool and 4th/5th liners at the NHL/AHL levels too.

I don't disagree with you that it would be nice to move on from Jones at some point, we just disagree on what fair value is doing that, RHD that can eat 25 minutes per game and chip in some offense in the 35-50 point range are pretty darn valueable even if Jones has been a touch overpaid. Virtually every team in the league would find a spot for Jones at 7.6 per with the dearth of RHD and the cap set to rapidly increases. With that much retention, the ask is multiple 1st rounders in value, especially with playoff teams having late 1sts as their currency. Add in taking Dumba and his 3.75 next season....the price goes up.

LHD prospects are simply not a big need. Vlassic is pencilled in for the foreseeable future and we have Korchinski, Allan, EDM, Kaiser knocking at the door. I am not saying no to a top pairing guy like Schaefer if we get the chance, but otherwise I am trying to address other holes first. I like Borque, but 5'10 is the last thing we should be chasing with the best trade chip we hold (and even moreso if we are retaining and taking a shit contract back too).

Dallas prospect pool is pretty shitty and they would not be one of my top choices to deal Jones to. If I am dealing Jones and taking back Dumba, the starting point is Emil Hemming and their '26 1st which I would not love.

I would trade Hall, Maroon, C.Smith, Murphy, Martinez, Brodie, Bertuzzi for whatever you can. I would be willing to offer Murphy + Donato if and only if it returns a 1st rd pick in 2026. I would then move heaven and earth to trade for Matthew Barzal to pair with Bedard. He is exactly the type of player Bedsy needs on his line who has speed and hands
this post has one negative reply, which in turn has a reply from one of the mods of this board defending your initial statement that donato and murphy should bring back a first. if this is your idea of being "universally hated", i have to say you must have been a fairly popular person throughout your life.

100% agree on both the potential return for Murphy, and the lack of need to retain on Jones.

I do think a relatively short term bad contract might have to come back (Manson or Dumba), but the increase in cap should have Jones' contract be reasonable without retention.

On Murphy, see if you can get a 2026 pick back, but the quicker the deal the better to move him while relatively healthy.

Agree with you on the potential return from Dallas. If we're moving SJ while taking back an anchor in Dumba - I think Hemming and a late 2026 1st is a decent place to start. With the forecasted increase in the cap - Jones' contract is going to be very reasonable in short order.

Agree...deal Murphy ASAP or wrap him in bubble wrap. Retained, I think you can get a 1st for him because the teams trading for him are trading a late '25 which most feel this is not a deep draft and a big drop off in the mid to late 20's on talent relative to most drafts. Even a '26 1st is not all that valueable for teams that know they are going to be good....say Stunley Blowman in Edmonton aka the guy that lost 3 Saad trades (maybe he wants to lose a Murphy trade twice). You could always add a sweetner ala Lafferty added to McCabe.
