Dallas apparently is willing for a pure rental. I bet they sign him though
I'm seeing news where Carolina would lock rantanen up for a 8 year contract before the trade to Dallas. I'm glad we are sliding out of the convo finally. I would not nessessary want him here. Skips the backchecking and defence way too often for him to fit in our system and the parts we would have to give away could seriously destroy the locker room.

What is our offer? Lundell +?

I don't think that Zito is even entertaining the idea of acquiring Rantanen. He doesn't have the assets and there's no need for Rantanen because the Cats won the Cup a year ago with a top6 that was composed of players that are still in the roster.

Dundon is known as cheap.

Seems like you are the winner…

Rantanen’s extension coming at OVER 13M for signing in Dallas !

Seems like Carolina never went over the 100M/8years… Which from what I heard, is already what he declined in Colorado. How do the Hurricanes even thought they would be players with that offer ?

Stupid Canes and cheap Dundon ! :biglaugh:

Looks like the Loafs won't be adding any real impact boo hoo

They have some decent trade assets but no room to fit anyone cap wise unless there's huge retention and/or roster players going out the door. Their top four forwards make almost $47M combined so being so top-heavy is screwing them over. ha ha

I have faith that Bill Zito will not do something insane like trade Mackie Samoskevich or Anton Lundell for a rental of this guy who is currently experiencing a career implosion in Carolina.

Looking at his trade history, I think Knight is the only roster player that was signed another year to be moved. Huberdeau and Weegar needed contracts.

Wow

I think Rantanen is a very good player, but 13M annually? Some even suggesting it's north of 14M/y ?

That's absurd. I honestly wouldn't take him 1:1 for Sam Reinhart, all things being equal. I think this is gonna be a Huberdeau 2.0 situation.
Rhino and Mikko are about the same level, but no one in their right mind would (or at least should) pay Mikko $13m+/year over paying Rhino $8.625/year.

Mikko’s incredible, but Rhino is 1000x better defensively (and effort wise) while Mikko is only marginally better offensively.

He has learned from the Giroux/Chiarot trade-deadline !

Seth Jones wouldn't have been here without the terms left on his contract.

Bill won't make those mistakes again, going after guys he knew he wouldn't be able to keep unless it's for a discount. That's just not how it works. But he knows now...

Don't worry.

Rantanen for ERod, Balinskis and a bag or two of (gently used) pucks.

What say you?

I don’t really view the 2022 deadline moves as a mistake at all.

It’s easy to let recent success/recency bias creep in. You’ve got to put yourselves back in the shoes of a franchise that hadn’t won a playoff series in 26 years. This was not a winning team, with a losing culture, and one of the most depressed/suppressed fan bases in all of sports.

I’d argue those 2022 playoffs were an absolutely vital stepping stone for the franchise to learn how to start winning and have success when it mattered. It also showed the org what and who it needed to take the next step. There’s a lot to be said about experience and “having been there before” and the value that brings.

With all that said, yea Chiarot sucked lol.

I agree.

But still think an experienced Zito wouldn't have given up Tippett AND a first for a rental Giroux that would only waive here.

Also, an experienced Zito wouldn't have given an unprotected first for Chiarot.

There was room to make those two deals happen without giving up this much IMO.

I think it's his biggest mistake... But won't do it anymore.

An experienced Zito traded what he did for Jones, and he that only come here or Dallas and Dallas wasn't interested in Jones. MT apparently only wanted to come here, he sent a fair deal the other way. He pays a fair price even when Florida is the only possible destination.

But I agree that he might have changed his opinion about high end rentals.

Billy doesn't care about Knight or the first... He said two important things during the press-conference:

- terms and retention made it possible, only reasons they did it.

- when you have a chance to get a Seth Jones, you go get it !

Which to me means he really does value Jones pretty pretty high (those were his words with Tkachuk too, remember), and value his contract.

So he was okay with paying the price, even though he was the only one willing to dance... I'd rather he overpays now and gives us that BIG boost for the run this year (and 5 more after that), than waiting for a better situation or lesser offer possible at the draft !

Maybe at the draft, Jones would have expanded his list of possible destinations... You never know.
