The Henrique idea makes more sense in the offseason when Haula's contract/roster spot is freed up. Also not sure if Anaheim's ownership is too keen on eating a significant portion of the deal for the entire season, but we'll see. From an Anaheim perspective, it might make more sense to see where they're drafting post-lottery before making a decision on somebody like Henrique.

Henrique also has a partial NTC, but if he were smart with the list then it would block most of the league. Taking a step away from the ice, he and his wife just had their first kid a couple months back. They might not be looking to move quite yet.

STL - Ivan Barbashev (C/W)
- Middle 6 guy able to play all forward roles and brings much needed physicality and another strong body to work along the boards, something we lack for the playoffs. Cup winner with Blues in 2019. Career high 60 points last year, on pace for 40 this year.

PHI - James van Riemsdyk (W)
- Overpaid as hell but would bring the exact element to our powerplay that it has been lacking. Probably wouldnt see top 6 ice time, but in the playoffs those PP opportunities are extremely important and adding someone of his caliber to our PP arsenal would be great. Good with deflections and screens, makes his money around the net.

Others

FLA - Sam Bennett (C) UFA 2025
FLA - Sam Reinhart (RW) UFA 2024
- Two more interesting names. All depends if FLA would be ready to retool its roster a little bit. Reinhart would bring some much needed scoring touch (career high 33 goals, on pace for 25 this year, has been 20 goal scorer his whole career) and another right handed shot. Bennett would bring some good sandpaper and make a great 3C for the next two years who could jump up in case of injuries. Has 91 pts in 124 games with FLA.

Now what should be on the table? Not necessarily for these guys, but in general. I'm more looking at it like what shouldnt be on the table. In theory anyone outside of core 4 and the obvious untouchables Luke and Nemec should be up for grabs if said hockey trade makes Devils a better club now and in the future. Holtz, first, Boqvist, Muk, Vilen, Foote, Clarke, Thompson, Casey etc. I dont mind trading away roster players either if it makes us better.

I'm not saying we should go all in, like sell our whole farm to somebody.. but we shouldnt wait either. I want to bolster up this team a bit come trade deadline. If you cant catch a big fish like Meier or something thats fine. Bring in some character guys and proven veterans to take over Boqvists of the world eventhough I'm a supporter of his. I think in this league as long as you make it in, you can win the whole damn thing. All it takes is one injury here and there or couple bounces your way and youre looking at conference finals or something. You dont have to be a powerhouse to win once. Theres been more weird Cup finalist and winners than this 2023 Devils team. Hell, Rags last year were not that far off from Cup final. They got lucky with Pens losing Jarry, that happens in the playoffs. Beat Canes in 7, thats one bounce right there. Had a 2-0 lead against Lightning. Who says Shesterkin couldnt have stolen Avs series for them? I get that he had a historical year, but any goalie in this league can get hot and have a dream run, dream series.

I think we should plug some of the holes and really try to make a run for it this year. Worst thing is that you get your core guys some experience for the future. Dont make dumb trades like "1st for Chiarot" kinda stuff, but dont be afraid to make moves either imo.

How great is it that as a NJ fan we can have this discussion with a straight face after the halfway point? Still premature to look at anything closely but they have progressed so much in one season. At this point it’s more than just the league average goaltending although that obviously helps

Yeah I mean usually we'd be having discussions like can we get a first for Kulikov and how much Gusev has value until he gets bought out.

With respect to TDL deals you never know how the team will look in terms of health but if they are all healthy I would not get a forward. I would look at a right handed defender to sit behind Severson

Jeez, I understand his goofs are very noticeable but you really think Sevs needs that much babysitting?

i agree but i also want a middle six forward with size and or physicality

Hah. I just think they have a pile of lefties if they need one. They don’t have a backup righty.
I am seeing alot of B Smith on both sides
He's a lefty, does he have a comfort level on right?
I know all of the "he should sit for..." but he's got value. 56 playoff gms played, 14 last yr with Car. 1G 3A

He’s a lefty and presumably they can get a guy like him who is a righty with an expiring deal for a modest cost. That aside if the cap doesn’t allow I’m not giving a pick or a meaningful prospect to add a depth guy.

Trust me, leaving Bernier on LTIR all season maximizes the cap available to be utilized for Devils.
It's how Tampa have rorted cap situation for years, and why they actively traded for Brent Seabrook.

Tampa didn’t get cap space from getting Seabrook LTIR contract, they got cap space because they traded a healthy Tyler Johnson for Seabrook’s LTIR contract and got his 5m off the books.

That cost them a 2nd and having the Seabrook contract on their roster for 3 years after that, which isn’t great actually.

Some confusion about this was created when it was wrongly reported at first that Tampa got all of Seabrooks’ salary as cap space (6.875m) but nope, they just got relief for the 5m from Johnson’s contract.

What’s our cap situation and what could it be like at the TDL? I’m going to echo @HBK27 with a hearty f*** if I know.

Apparently Vrana has been scratched twice for Grand Rapids the last 2 games, is this something we should legit take a look at or stay away from completely? I would love for Vrana to be on Hughes's wing but this off ice issue might be legit cost the dude's career from the looks of it.

If he has been forced to go to NHL substance program, I would stay away completely.

There's too much going on there and it feels like it's still an issue. I'm out on that for now

At this point, everyone is capped out. Adding someone like Johnsson to any trade is ostensibly just a cost of doing business add. If anyone is asking anything more just for taking him back, then they can take the offer they like second best and the devils can move on

I think the Devils should look at Erik Portillo. I'm not sure he's going to be a star, but he's certainly got at least NHL potential.

I have to imagine the Sabres will deal him at the deadline.

According to a reputable source on Twitter, if we have a completely healthy roster and send down Bahl & Foote while Bernier remains on LTIR, the Devils would have $2.048M in cap space at the deadline.

The math is the current cap space listed on CapFriendly ($390K) plus the value of Bahl & Foote's contracts.

So, unless anybody has any better/other information, I think that's the amount of cap space we should assume is available for any trade deadline deals.

Did they say what Nemec’s cap hit would be? I know performance bonuses of ELC players are calculated into their cap hits if you use LTIR but I don’t quite understand how it works (as in all things related to LTIR).

Does it only count bonuses he can still achieve? Is it pro-rated? Do I even know what pro-rated means in this context or is that just word association? I don’t know, maybe? Also, how much do I f***ing loathe this shit?

Oh wait, I definitely know the answer to the last one.

You made it really far into that post before you broke out the asterisks. Small steps.

Canuck fan coming in peace.

So someone (An article from something called wheel house hockey. Houseofhockey.net) is suggesting that the Canucks are close on a deal with NJ.

Boeser for Holtz. Apparently they want Canucks to take 30% retention, and the Canucks are asking for a 2nd pick to do that.

sounds like a tolerable deal to me.

Any comments on value. I gather NJ fans are not that high on Holtz right now. Do you have the space to fit Boeser in under the cap, or would you be looking at a salary dump to make the deal work?

Devils fans are mostly patient with Holtz but see him as expendable.

Most pretty much wouldn't take Boeser for free with that contract.

Devils fans are not that high on Boeser, on his regular speed advanced stats and actual scoring rate. But fans aren't the management group, so who knows.

I can promise you this is pure BS from that site.

Every major legit insider has the Devils in on Meier. He is by far their top target and priority, with Holtz, a 1st rounder and another player/pick as the base of nearly every deal. Even if they don't want Holtz, the Devils have more than enough assets to pull off a deal. No other deal will be close until the Meier situation gets figured out.

If the Devils don't land him, maybe NJ (shudders) pivots to Boeser, but I can't see Holtz and a 2nd rounder going the other way. Devils fans will legitimately lose their shit if this deal goes down. Hell, we'd probably lose our shit if Boeser is dealt here for much less.

Devils have maybe $2M in cap space, so money has to go out in either deal. Sharangovich might be part of a deal for Meier or Johnnson could be moved in either deal - he wouldn't cost a team much beyond cap space, as his total salary is only $750K this season, more than half of which has already been paid out.
