So many of our slot chances ended up as blocked shots, tons of sticks in passing lanes, and tight checking from Nashville. We weren't good along the boards in either zone. A few missed calls especially at the end but shit happens, and good teams find a way past that. Like GG said, it was a big boy game last night and we didn't play a big boy game.

Completely agree, that’s how I saw it as well. Last 40 min they had the puck a ton and played great defensively, but at ES they weren’t able to break through into actually creating good scoring chances that resulted on SOG. Credit Nashville’s play but also not an uncommon theme for this NYR group when the opposition plays like the Preds did.

Nashville's team D, physicality and goaltending required us to score hardworking, dirty goals -- getting rebounds, deflections, screens. Saros had a clean look at most of, if not all, of our best chances. We needed to take away his eyes on some of those and then fight for rebounds. Far too often I see guys flying by the slot/crease area. Or I see them hanging out on the backdoor but no one is bothering to get position on the D. Part of screening the goalie, is putting your body in a position that blocks the D from getting in the lane. Our guys are hiding behind multiple defenders hoping for the perfect pass. In games like last night -- which are the kinds of games you play down the stretch and in the playoffs -- you cannot rely on east-west passing, scoring off of rushes, etc. You have to get at least half of your goals as the result of winning goalmouth battles. We can dominate possession, we can even dominate the boards, but if we never fight for the blue paint in the offensive zone, we will always be a fun team to watch for the first 60 games of the year. Kakko, Laf, Chytil, Zibanejad, Gauthier, Blais, even Hunt -- all need to figure this out. Kreider is the only one who knows how to do this.

I would love for someone to work on this stat: What is our record when we score a rebound goal?

Need some help on the rules.
Can Brennan Othmann or Will Cuylle be brought here for up to 8 or 9 games and then still be allowed to return to his junior team ? Is that in the rules ?
If they come up now I think it burns a year off their ELC ? I am not sure ....good question , but I don't think now is the time for either .

We need at least one line in the top 9 that can do what you describe. Play heavy as a style. We're not going to get that from Strome and Panarin. Hunt does provide a slot presence, but it's not their foundational style. And Mika and Kreider? Nope, don't think so either. The third line? Nope.

Kreider is weird. On the power play, he becomes a net-front beast. 5v5, he's a glider and not a particularly strong board worker. 5v5, he's more of a mover and cycler trying to play catch with Mika.

Is it just me or others I am zero excited to watch the young forwards we have but instead excited to watch Igor (deservedly) get back and make those amazing passes to get rushes started.
Its amazing when K'Andre Miller is much more exciting to watch rush the puck up the ice than pretty much any of our young forwards.

What's happening is, guys like Fox and Miller are able to take immediately big-boy slots that were available. Kakko, Laf, Chytil, and others to a lesser extent DID IN FACT have those opportunities -- maybe not as great, especially the lack of power play time -- to play with the big boys. Problem was, they have zero chemistry with the big boys. So, with the exception of Kakko, now they're playing together, and that means developing together but that isn't as ideal as developing with the big boys and growing a big-boy game.

The bottom line is there's a glass ceiling these kids will have to deal with for the foreseeable future.

There's really no reason at this point for Zibanejad to be on PP1. He's not great at faceoffs and his one timer from the left dot which was his big weapon when he was actually good hasn't been a thing for a long time now. Plus, I think Panarin likes being in that area more anyway. Take Zibanejad off, let Strome take the faceoffs and put Kakko on that unit so there's a lefty shooting threat across from Panarin and near Fox.

The fact Zibanejad is doing this poorly right now with solid wingers like Kreider and Kakko is a horrible sign for a player who just signed an 8 year contract.

Zib hasn't been playing in his blast zone most of the season. He's been in the center part of the ice. Someone should tell Gallant.

Sammy Blais getting hurt seems to have helped Gauthier come to life, but it's a big loss and tonight makes that obvious.

We're a really young team still. Three of our top four defensemen, three of our RWs, our starting goaltender, and Lafreniere haven't even played a full 82 game season before. You can't expect us to steamroll start to finish.

I think that game was handed to the preds by the officials. I do think we have a lot of room for improvement that will hopefully come with time. October we were as bad as the Coyotes but with a phenomenal goalie. November we were as dominant as Tampa. December has been a mixed bag. As long as we trend up, it's all good.

Gauthier has come to life? Well, he is on pace for a 4 goal season.

Me Zibbyhead showed some signs I hope he gets going we could use more offense soon.

Nashville, 20 hits in the first period. Dang. That was a pretty brutal stat. They really just hit everything they see. I saw Tolvanen put a good hit down down low. He wasn't a player I expected to be so physical.
