Feels like very early on, if we were doing reactionary weekly power rankings…

Martone and Misa probably right up with Hagens in a three-way contest for #1. Hagens is really just getting going in his NCAA season so this is more about the two OHL guys blowing up. Martone’s size and projection is incredible but the other two are true dynamic centers so it would come down to team needs and traits. This feels like 2023 a bit, minus Bedard factor - just get me a top 3 pick and I know I’m gonna get a foundational piece.

Tier 1: Hagens, Martone, Misa

Frondell probably temporarily drops out of Tier 1 simply due to coming back from injury and rust. Same with Schaefer. I don’t think McQueen is quite the level of the tier 1 guys but he should be right behind them.

Tier 2: Frondell, Schaefer, McQueen

Of the rest, I think you have to drop Ryabkin out of the top two tiers due to his start-stop situation - but he’s got the talent to get back in the convo. I think Eklund 2.0 might have the best chance of all the forwards to crash the top groups….he’s having a great season in Sweden.

As far as challenging Schaefer on the blueline - Hensler has the tools but will need more freshman level production and that may be hard to do on UW. I think Jackson Smith may be the guy to watch…his got a great combo of size, skill and production and big two-way WHL defenders tend to go high. Mrtka’s traits may put him up there as well. I think there are lots of good defenseman prospects in the middle and late 1st but this doesn’t appear to be a great defenseman draft if you are picking super high. Definitely not as good as 2024 though I think Schaefer has the potential to be the best of both years.

Schmidt has taken the lead among the mini-stars with his incredible start, with Benak still adjusting to North America and Mooney shelved.

Big risers: Bear, Behm, Sharpe, Genborg, Lakovic, Potter, Carbonneau, Cootes, Cihar. Somebody is going to take Genborg in the first round, he’s an animal.

Too early to single out fallers but disappointed in Gavin’s start and most of the USNTDPs.

Side note: This is gonna be the Canadian, Swedish and goalie draft. The CHL crops look great…the high end OHL talent, WHL depth and at least a trio of potential high Q picks. Everybody has known about the Swedish 07 group for years and add in Eklund. And tons of goalie prospects. As suspected, the American 07’s and Finnish crop look weak. Russian crop looks wild cardish at best. Czech’s look pretty interesting.

It's a personal taste. The sum of skating and qi impresses me. If he were taller and stronger I would see a case for the top 5. But it is very likely that he will be somewhere between the end of the first and beginning of the second round.

2. Martone
3. Misa
4. Ryabkin
5. McQueen

It’s early; I haven’t really dived into it too much yet. These 5 seem to have distinguished themselves from the rest of the class so far though, especially the first three, although a lot can change between now and draft time.

Ryabkin and McQueen both have a bit of a wildcard element going on compared to the others here, for different reasons.

Should be an interesting year.

Pretty good looking WHL class so far and will be helped with Mrtka coming to Seattle but McQueen will need to stay healthy once back along with Hamilton+Gavin getting on the right track or they'll fall. Bear+Lakovic could push for close to top 10 if they keep progressing, Behm+Schmidt have the skill but still have questions how they'll translate to pro hockey.

I’m glad to see you not think McQueen is a top-5 talent. He could be, but from what I’ve seen this season he lacks the “it” factor that I would want to see for a player taken that high. I’m personally worried he is a Logan Brown, but I do understand the upside there.

I really like Jack Ivankovic and would love to put him 1st round but his size will prevent that as he is 5'11, but you never know.....once you start getting around pick 20 it is pretty much up in the air at the moment for guys about 15 deep in the 2nd round of who would go where...very good draft for goaltenders IMO with Ivankovic, Frolov, Andreyanov, Harenstam all in my 2nd round with any of them getting 1st round looks IMO

Love to see Jackson Smith and Aitcheson getting some respect, and I love seeing the Osmanis honorable mention. Out of curiosity, what made you put O'Brien, Moore, and Benak so low? Also, what do you see in Rombach and Simpson to put them so high? Especially for Simpson, who hasn't played a game this year and wasn't super impressive last year.

O’Brien: The bad Hlinka is still in my mind and he hasn’t exactly lighten it up this year. He’s a good player, but I also think that the type of game he plays is not the most difficult to find.

Moore: Never been a fan. He’s semi big and skates well, but his offense looks like the type that doesn’t translate to actual NHL PP type level of offensive ability. I don’t see high end offensive traits. In a more structured pro game I don’t think his type of offense works well. The big issue with him is that his compete level is very weak and virtually non existent at times. Think he doesn’t show up often enough either. It’s in spurts.

Benak: I like the skillset, but I feel it’s almost impossible to be a 5’7 winger in a junior league that isn’t 1PPG and get picked earlier than where I have him. I think public lists have him way higher than where I assume NHL teams have him right now. I think I like his game to put him where I have him because I don’t suspect NHL teams have him in that range right now.

Rombach: He doesn’t put up offense, but 6’6, can skate, has a solid first pass. Not a sexy type of player, but those types of players go higher than public lists usually have them.

Simpson: I thought he was pretty decent last year. He played 4th line for TC, so keep in mind those stats are playing 4th line most of the time. They didn’t give him more than that because he splits between high school and USHL. This year it seems like he’s only playing high school, at least until the high school season ends. But he’s probably the best High School Hockey player in Minnesota this year. He was the USA’s best forward at the Hlinka (point totals don’t show it because he couldn’t buy one but was creating the most scoring chances).

Thanks for the list PB!

It does seem like Jackson Smith and Caleb Desnoyers have done the most so far to lift themselves into the “look like top 10 type picks” range from the group that started the year outside that range with both awesome statical seasons and both highly well-rounded games and very projectable traits and tools.

I question whether Hensler will be able to hold on to a top 10 type position and I think Eklund has done enough to be firmly in that convo but I see your rankings 1-11 as somewhat of a “tier” and wonder if you see a bit of a break after that as well - or maybe you are really bullish on Aitcheson and a few of the guys right below?

It was kind of 1-6 at a similar level and then 7-11 for me at a similar level, and then from there very close (however many starting at 12) for the next group. I feel like the first six are all players I'd like in that range (for the typical draft), and then 7-11 is also palatable for their range, but then I feel at 12 you start getting to players that seem more like they may be a little lower in another draft, and there's not much separation or certainty on what the right picks are.

I think with Hensler one thing to keep in mind is that Wisconsin historically the last five years isn't an easy team for a top prospect to play for. Obviously that doesn't necessarily help him get better, but I don't think his start has been disastrous. Could've gone better than it has, but I'd argue players like Holloway (14OA in 2020) and Stramel (21OA in 2023) that were late birthdays that played their draft season at Wisconsin had rougher goes of it, at least in the early going. I still see Hensler as a player progressing towards a top 4 defenseman, and there's a chance for better than that. I never bought that he was truly a challenger for top 5, but I'm also not as down on him as many seem to be.
