What do you see in Zether?

Many are questioning his intensity and his skating but he was very efficient for Rögle in a 4th line energy role, also and particularly during playoffs. He may not have played much but his skating is definitely a lot better than most people seem to believe. Otherwise he'd have never been this good in such a role playing on wider European ice. His skating is gonna need work of course but it's not all that bad for the big guy that he is.

I don't think Rögle helped his draft chances much by giving him limited SHL minutes rather than keeping him on their junior team but he was just too good for juniors and even though he didn't play much he was still an important part of Rögle's turnaround and eventual playoff run where they didn't lose a single game until the final. Had he played juniors instead he'd have put up ridiculous stats. He was PPG in the J20 a year ago already.

While I know that he's an 05 late birthday and therefore expected to be a bit more mature I just have a hard time believing that a player displaying these kind of qualities during his draft season isn't gonna turn into an NHL player. We're talking about a kid who is physically imposing (even playing vs men), very mature and responsible for his age and I have no doubt that the offense he already showed vs (older) kids is gonna translate to pro hockey as well as he gets more ice time and more of an offensive role.

Big, physical righty (probably not close from filled out) with soft hands who can play both C and W. I understand that he's a polarizing player but in my view he's about as safe of a future NHL player as it gets.

I'm very curious on your take on Levshunov
That's quite a fall from consensus

I like him but there are just so many good defensemen available in this year's draft. Many of them with better tools, higher upside. Silayev is way tougher than Levshunov, Dickinson, Parekh and Buium are way more skilled, Yakemchuk is both.

Good prospect, just relatively soft for his size. I also don't think he's dynamic enough to drive play at NHL level. He's gonna play in the NHL but I doubt he's gonna have the offense to play on the top pairing. 2nd pairing seems more likely. Solid allround prospect but without elite skills. Hands and vision very much average only.

Starting to get final draft list territory but not just yet. Still wanna see couple of guys, like Badinka etc but I am starting to have decent idea where I have these guys slotted. Not going to pretend that I have like solid idea of last top 20-30 positions in my list but at least I have seen some stuff from them. Usually at least one game and some clips to support it.

This draft starts to drop in quality after T4 quite lot. Not that they are bad players, just clearly bit worse in where they are now when compared to guys above them.

Tiers until t6 i am pretty confident at this point but obviously there is still quite lot of players that I havent really seen other than maybe highlights so I am not willing to put them on the list yet. I usually watch at least one game and some of the highlights before I put an initial position on guys. Upper tier guys I usually watch more games. Random dude on the internet only has so much time to spend on this hobby.

I know the 2023 draft hasn‘t even been done yet, but I think that it would be interesting to talk about the 2024 NHL draft.

This thread‘s purpose is to gather all your rankings throughout the next year, so you can see how your views on certain players changed throughout time.

I’ll start off the thread with a top-64 feel free to use it as a baseline for yours.

here are my initial thoughts for the draft. It is a clear top 4 in my opinion, all 4 guys could have a claim at the title by seasons end. Demidov is unlikely because of him being Russian but he is very talented.

if you need a defender, THIS is the class. it is one of the deepest blueline draft I can ever remember. honestly it wouldn’t surprise me if 5 of the top-10 consist of defenders when all is said and done.

I’d like to point out that Norway has never had an NHL draft pick selected higher than 42nd overall, and they have never produced a first round pick. This year the country has 2 of the best prospects the nation has ever produced in Michael Brandsegg Nygard and Stian Solberg who could both be first rounders. It’ll be an interesting storyline to follow moving forward for the nation.

This is my personal list, not what I expect to happen on draft day. Therefore, some unpopular opinions included but it's where I'd rank the prospects based on potential.
Top-64 without Boisvert, Massé and Beaudoin is BOLD!

Taking a stab at this since I've had so much issue sorting my thoughts on the top guys:

1 Celebrini
2 Levshunov
3 Yakemchuk
4 Silyayev
5 Buium
6 Demidov
7 Catton
8 Parekh
9 Lindstrom
10 Iginla

No Gridin either. And I probably should have left even more prospects off my list because I'm just not excited about them. Some of them (like Wetsch or Brandsegg-Nygård) I listed only because people whose opinion I value a lot are high on them. However, I'm not a scout, just a hockey fan. So my ranking is influenced not only by my own viewings but also others who might have more expertise.

Since the draft order is pretty much set, this is a good time to reveal the famous Santos List. This is a mock draft, not a ranking list. Ranking list's often leaves out team needs and draft strategies(if a team has a notable strategy), i tried to find the unholy marriage of all 3 and here it is, enjoy:

1. SJS: Macklin Celebrini
- No-Brainer.
2. CHI: Artyom Levshunov
- Hawks are short of top pair RHD prospects or top pair D in general, so they take the best one available. Can't go wrong with this one, minute munching RHD.
3. ANA: Sam Dickinson
- Forward core in Anaheim is starting to look good but defense needs more talent. There is something Seider-esq in Dickinson, therefore Verbeek picks him.
4. CBJ: Cayden Lindstrom
- Columbus adds size to the forward core.
5. MTL: Berkly Catton
- Habs add much needed secondary scoring.
6. UTAH: Anton Silayev
- Utah Wildcats continue getting bigger... and russian. This is going to be tough team to play against.
7. OTT: Carter Yakemchuk
- Sens are short of RHD prospects and Yakemchuk fits in their identity very well. And since he is one oldest players in this class, Sens can expect him to be in the lineup soon.
8. SEA: Zeev Buium
- Krakens D prospect pool is basically empty and the teams D core is aging as well. They take best d-man available.
9. CGY: Tij Iginla
- Ownership wants butts to the seats and jerseys to sell and top of that they get a good hockey player.
10. NJD: Ivan Demidov
- The russian factor drops Demidov but New Jersey can afford to wait Demidov for a longer period than the others.
11. SJS: Zayne Parekh
- Sharks D prospect pool is empty so they take the best d-man available.
12. PHI: Cole Eiserman
- BPA, Philly fills the void left by Gauthier with another USDP product.
13. MIN: Beckett Sennecke
- Minny adds more size and grit.
14. BUF: Konsta Helenius
- Buffalo repeats what they been past few years, hunting for highest upside.
15. DET: Michael Brandsegg-Nygård
- Fits in Detroit's draft strategy like a fist in an eye.
16. STL: Michael Hage
- BPA
17. WSH: Adam Jiricek
- BPA
18. CHI: Trevor Connelly
- BPA, a troubled kid and a troubled NHL org. It should be a match made in heaven.
19. VGK: Liam Greentree
- Vegas hopes to find the next Mark Stone.
20. NYI: Stian Solberg
- Physical and mobile PMD, i can see il padrino Lamoriello being very interested.
21. LAK: Igor Chernyshov
- Fits in the team identity.
22. NSH: Charlie Elick
- On paper Elick is prototypical Preds pick.
23. TOR: Henry Mews
- Leafs have to start fixing that horrible back end, they haven't picked a d-man in first two rounds in 6 years.
24. COL: Sacha Boisvert
- BPA
25. BOS: Jett Luchenko
- Bruins picks best center available.
26. MTL: Dean Letourneau
- Habs add size.
27. CAR: Cole Beaudoin
- Canes select size and grit.
28. CGY: Ryder Ritchie
- BPA and another local boy to Calgary, maybe Ritchie and Iginla stays there longer period than Tkachuk & Gaudreau.
29. DAL: Terik Parascak
- BPA
30. NYR: Lucas Pettersson
- There is some Aho-esq in him and Rangers are hoping for a steal here.
31. ANA: EJ Emery
- Ducks continue to bolster up their defense.
32. PHI: Yegor Surin
- Michkov-era is beginning in Philly and Briere makes sure that Michkov has enough buddies and picks a whole new type of bully to the Broad Street.

Just because Yakemchuk is a late birthday and the defenseman with the highest upside that doesn't mean he should be rushed to the NHL. He's more of a project. If given enough development time, the return could be huge. Especially his skating is a work in progress. I hope he stays in the WHL for an overager season and gets at least one full AHL season as well. Ideally he'd go to Europe as the lighter schedule and wider European uce can really help those kind of defensemen (Bichsel, Seider) work on their skating but that's not gonna happen. Still I think it's gonna be important not to rush Yakemchuk.
