Hahah truuuuuuuu

So, in Maurice's head: BIG BODY PLUS, ROOKIE MINUS

Luckily for us, he doesn't have a terrible veteran on the trip to replace Stanley with.

I think he keeps him in BUT there is a slight chance he wants Logan to watch a game and wants to give Samberg a shot. HOWEVER, I think the fact remains that Samberg really isn't fully indocrinated as a pro/ Jet so that might be a flag for Maurice.

I'd say Heinola has a better chance to make it in than Samberg (did Ville travel with the team?)
hey. hey.

Samberg is 24......is the plan to groom him, until 30?

He's 21 and turns 22 shortly and he chose to go back to UMD for his 3rd year so I don't think we have been letting his rot quite yet since he just turned pro. I probably want to see him in our line up as bad as anyone so hopefully that happens this season.

Stanley played a pretty good first game. Nice going, kid!

He was a lot better than I expected. That isn't saying much though. He played a pretty safe game, but he was terribly slow. Made a couple of nice plays though, credit where it is due.

I understand the word, but don't really agree.

The defense was far from prime, and we had a couple of stinkers out there, but I'd say the forwards lost us that game. Countless fumbles leading to extended zone time for the Leafs, and lack of offensive execution.

The D was horrible and so was the offense - I'd say the team would be responsible for that loss.

I'm somewhere in the middle. I think if you want to truly leverage your prospect pool, you need to give them time to grow into the opportunity, reward those who are working hard, and truly give your prospects an opportunity to realize their potential, based of course on performance.

That's why I was all for Stanley getting in over Samberg. He's put the work in, he's doing what the org wants and he deserved his opportunity. Samberg, whilst being better prepared for pro hockey than many of our previous prospects still hadn't really had many reps with the team, and is brand new to the culture, systems, etc.

I do believe that Maurice tends to hold on to vets sometimes, however, I also think that it's overstated greatly on these forums, and I think that the benefits of veterans aren't understood to the extent that allows the average fan to truly appreciate their contributions.

EDIT: As for Niku, I also think it was the appropriate move to have him in the opening day lineup. This is pretty much Sami's last chance with the org. so it's good to try and confirm your assessment of a player as a team before moving away from them.

There's not much about your post that I take issue with. I underestimate the value of veterans and I think Coach's overestimate it.

Stanley has earned his shot and by all accounts he acquitted himself well enough last night so I am taking it game by game. I was always on Niku's team but he is in over his head in the top 4. Honestly I don't know the right timing for moving Samberg (or Heinola) into the line up? There are lots of cases where teams brought in guys at 22 and they were ready and started having a pretty big positive impact so I don't think we should be afraid.

What I do know so far is that we don't have the horses on the back end without DeMelo. We are missing a critical piece in our top 4 and have had to compromise to the detriment of Morrissey. DeMelo will be back soon which is great if Mo doesn't get cute but we need to be ready for the next injury to one of our top 4 D men. I think we need to give Samberg a shot sooner rather than later to at least see how that looks.

I was afraid our D would collapse, under the circumstances. But we had almost zero offense. By my count Connor's goal came on just our second good shot. Wheeler had one a little earlier in that period.

We were outshot 17-0 in the 2nd period by 6.5 minutes in. I guess it is hard to claim good D play with those numbers, but I think that was a team effort.

On the bright side, Niku was a lot better than he had been in the previous game, or any other game I can recall. Stanley was not too bad.

Ves should have been put in last night. Big guy with skating and hands. Its pretty apparent we need more skill to compete.

Agree but we may have to wait on an injury to Thompson, MP and/or Lewis before he gets a shot. The more pressure PM feels the more likely we are to default to safe play style and safe roster options, IMO.

But maybe there's a plan in place to rotate youth through the 4th line as the season progresses and vet legs tire. In a short season this should prob happen sooner when the stakes are lower and many teams are still finding their way. Tougher to work in youth once we're in the "one mistake and our PO hopes vanish" stage.

I don't know about the person you were originally replying to, but for my part, I had no desire to be taken seriously. :)

Imagine if he didn't go back for that third season. Buff retires and he walks right in and never looks back. If only he knew.

Too many days off apparently...

Lots of weird bounces, at least they didn't get shut out. The very first PP looked okay, but Ehlers needs to be playing on PP1 to give them some decent movement.

I liked the look of the PP - at first.

Once the puck gets out of the D zone, we are hopeless. There is no power in the power play. They take the puck back very deep, whether necessary or not, very slowly and deliberately form up, and then slowly and deliberately try to gain the zone with possession. More often than not they make it over the blueline but give up the puck before they have had a chance to do anything with it. Rinse, repeat. Disgusting. Pathetic.

I guess we should remember that there was no pre-season this year. A lot of teams have had seriously bad games already.

Lets just not make it 2 in a row.

Watching a few games from all over this start of the season teams are really all over the place when it comes to consistency. The Jets are no different. I don't expect teams to find some consistency until they play 4 or 5 games.

That game was there to win though. We couldn't put one in on the PP and we gave the Leafs way too much all over the place on the ice. The Leafs did a good job standing us up on their blueline and some of speedier players seemed to be in lala land all night.

Yes the D isn't great but with out smarter and better plays from our forwards when they get the puck in our defensive zone would help a lot. I can count a dozen times in that first period alone where they made some really bad decisions or they couldn't handle a pass and the Leafs would retain possession.
I couldn't agree more. The Jets' forwards' puck management in their own zone was terrible. Even the usually effective Ehlers was awful with the puck in his own zone.

To be honest, I don't see a lot different from last season. Jets never play 60 minutes. Almost no physical play. The coach just keeps doing the same thing by overplaying 55 and 26.
After two games (and I'm not saying it stays this way), we do appear to be doing the same things we did last year. Namely:

We don't come to play at the drop of the puck like the other team always seems to.
We get outshot routinely.
We overplay certain players.
We cough up the puck a lot.
We count on Hellebuyck to bail us out.
