Game two and the lines are already in the blender - injuries this early kill you and it showed tonight.
Throwing Copp and Frenchie into the top 6 mix will have an impact - and not a good one.
Then there's our D without Poolman and Demelo - just when you thought it couldn't get any worse.

The result was about as bad as expected - we have zero depth. But I do understand why Mo is not bringing in more of our up and comers into games like this - that would be the wrong way to introduce your best young assets into the NHL. Stanley is the exception since he's a little longer in the tooth.

Hopefully we can work more youth into the mix as the season progresses and our vets settle in - that will allow at least some hope.
Our D needs to be better (add the youth) and our forwards need more time together (especially the complete top 6) -

The RD without De Melo, Poolman, and Sbisa gone has 0 depth. I'm hoping Heinola gets in next game. De Melo being in town still, should get some practice time with Samberg, which could pay dividends, in the home stand. Jets could have 9 different d-men already in the lineup by game #5 of the season, 10 if Samberg gets in, which is hardly a model of consistency, which was the problem to start last year.

I'm kind of surprised we haven't seen 81-55-26 yet. That was the go to.

Hard loss when your leaders give up the first one on the board. 1 for 8, with only a 5-3 goal on the PP, and 2 for 4 on the PK is a rough way to start the season, and that's probably the difference last night in not getting points..

generally speaking this is true... maurice is stubborn as hell... but give the teams lack of succes the past 2 seasons and wheelers age I think its a prime opportunity for someone like laine to be a permanent fixture on the top line.... its also important to reward laine with a fulltime top line position since hes in a contract year and might want out.
Laine is clearly the most talented player on this team... hes not young anymore...its time to ride or die with laine

Yeah, Laine isn't young anymore, he's already *checks notes* ...22?

Stanley was pretty good. But when he is good he is invisible. We lack talent at D why whe dont use Heinola? He could bring more creativity and possession with the puck. Cannot win games getting outshot like this.

Its all my fault i wasn't able to watch the game.

I think that covid precaution threw off the team.

Let see next game.

All 3 games will be against the sens

Fell asleep during the 2nd intermission, based on how the Jets played, it was a miracle i managed to stay awake for that long.

Or trades. Think things would have to go seriously off the rails for a coach firing to happen.

Normally I'm a bit hard on Maurice but only thing he messed up today we opening line up decisions and perhaps special teams

His unwillingness to pull the goalie with a powerplay, down by 1 with 4:30 late in the third, is inexcusable in this day and age. How am I supposed to believe he puts any faith in modern approaches to the game when he's still making that decision like it's still 1979?

Quick thoughts...

27-55-26 Line didn't stay together for very long. They were awful through most of the first period and a bit. Ehlers was especially bad. His worst game in the past couple of seasons, from my recollection. Scheifele was bad defensively, but a driver of offense as the game wore on. Better game by Wheeler than game 1. At least he was controlling board play and was adequate at zone exits. Copp added a bit to this line, but they really didn't have much at 5v5.

81-25-85 Not a great game from Connor, though he showed some zip later in the game. Stastny was constantly covering up for them in his own zone, but needs doped and play drivers to be effective in the offensive zone. Perreault has lost a step or two. Not really that effective tonight.

9-17-22 Decent game, but nothing special. The Jets lost 4-5 straight faceoffs on the PP before Tavares' goal, and Lowry lost 2-3 of them. Normally face offs don't get me worked up, but tonight the Jets lost almost every one on special teams and it led to way too much D zone time on the PK, and too little O zone time on the PP.

12-11-23 It's just a placeholder line, and I guess they did that. I wish they could be a bit more bold and think about how to add more to their 4th line.

44-8 I'm officially worried about Morrissey. I remember when he would neutralize the best forwards. Now he's just a guy on D. We really need to see him with a better partner. Hard to see how Niku stays in the lineup for much longer. He was the second best Moose D tonight, and just doesn't seem to keep focused.

24-4 So, Forbort is looking like a very good pick-up. He's been the best D over the first couple of games. Solid defensively and very reliable with the puck. This has been a good pair. Pionk is playing a good game alongside Forbort's steadiness.

64-88 Nice debut for Stanley. Didn't get caught out of position much, mostly clean with the puck. Beaulieu had another one of those shifts where he inexplicably gives the puck away and causes a minute of chaos. He shares bottom spot among Jets' D tonight with Niku. Time to see what Samberg and Heinola can do.

Hellebuyck was really solid. Deserved a win for that performance.

honestly I really don’t think Morrissey is ever going to be the player to carry a #6 Poolman or a #9 Niku as his partner on the top pair match ups. Josh is a complimentary top pairing player so he needs to be with a guy like DeMelo at a minimum to try to take on top pairing minutes.

Maurice needs to get this part of his job figured out fast. Hopefully when DeMelo gets back he joins Josh on the top pair and we can roll at least two second pairings which might not be terrible. You put a Josh with Sami and they are closer to a 3rd pair than a 1st pair.

Just some perspective...

Very early in the season and the Jets look quite rusty. I don't expect Ehlers to be this bad very often this season, as an example.

They will look a lot better with their full D.

It's a bit early to assess this team.

Heinola and Samberg need a look in the lineup. There's just no upside to playing Beaulieu over a young player.

^ 100%

Look around the league at other teams first two games and pretty much every team has a huge clunker. We won’t be able to to judge much for the first 10 games we just need to hang in, and not stumble too bad out of the gate. Not having DeMelo on an already undermanned D core is bad.

We just have to avoid a prolonged losing streak early and hang around.

The stage is set for the rookies. Short season, no fans, all this time off. This season is going to be as unpredictable as possible. Wheeler looks tired, Laine injured, the defense is a shambles already. I just can't help but wonder if 1,2 or 3 out of Samberg, Vesalainen, Heinola could grab at the opportunity and 5urn things around for us.

And by Game 2 I already remembered why after game threads are to be avoided mostly

Yea it’s the one thing we share in common with all NHL teams on HFBoards, It takes zero time for fans on this site to overreact to a bad game.

Couldnt watch the game, how did Frenchy look with Stastny and Connor? Lines stay the same throughout the game?

Looked about how you'd expect probably. Plays the same way as he always has just a step behind.

The lines were changed to 9-55-26 and 81-25-27 around 10 minutes into the 2nd. The shots were around 12-29 in favour of the Leafs at that point.

Gotta say I like Copp up there more than Perreault. Hopefully Laine makes it a moot point soon.

Yeah, the Jets seemed to settle down after the lines were shuffled and made the shots a little more respectable.

Our top 6 should be one of the better ones in the league. There is literally no reason for Maurice to be playing Scheif and Wheeler that much.

Scheifele played more than Matthews (his counterpart) and Stastny played more than Tavares (his counterpart). If anything, Maurice's use of the 3rd and 4th lines here is the issue, not the use of the top 2 lines.

That's also ignoring the extra 6 minutes of PP time the Jets had over the Leafs (0/4 on the PP, Leafs were 1/1), and that the Jets were trying to tie the game in the 3rd.

yeah. i turned it off. the 1st half of the Raptors' game was also painful to watch. called the wife down and we watched Ted Lasso instead.
truth be told, the Jets' game was a lovely trifecta of:

-this literally being pre-season hockey
-Jets' D being thinner than normal
-modern day hockey being way, way to dependent on pinball goals vs solid rushes
