that all said the canucks are a playoff team and arent giving up on the season so they will want a body to play and contribute today without having to face edler(send him to the east)

1)andersson-gives them a young 3rd/4th line centre(perfect since santorelli is done for the year)
2)kindl-replaces edler as a body is young and can play on ther bottom pair right away
3)pulkinnen- skilled prospect redy to play starting next year
4)1st rd pick- how better to restock the cupboard then with more draft picks

all of those make sense except kindl. they have 3 LD's already. stanton, hamhuis, garrison. garrison has apparently struggled a bit on RD (he's been edler's partner). bieksa, diaz, tanev on RD.

In regards to Edler; I'm sure Hank will have a couple good things to say about the Red Wings in passing in the locker room at the Olympics

Technically the Red Wings have 7 LD. Yea, they can play the right side, but they're still LD

Didn't even think about this. Doesn't have to be just Hank either, Alfie too.

Almost like playing with half of the Red Wings

LOL, yea. I'm pretty sure most NHLers are aware the Red Wings are Team Sweden so they don't have to sell it much but that little extra push in the locker room from our Swedes doesn't hurt

push him to the point where perhaps he "demands" a trade out by saying "if mgmt feels they're better off going in a new direction then perhaps its time changes are made and I wont stand in the way of whats doing best for the team"....

Oh yea. A little friendly chirping, despite being teammates, and a nickname later and he's a Red Wing. I know how this game works.

also ericsson and nyquist i wonder if big E and edler will be D partners there could be a lot of talk to edler within the wings that are there

kronwall and ericsson can sweet talk him on playing together as detroits top three then along comes nyquist to praise the youth movement and name drops jarnkrok and then in come the big wigs zetterberg and alffie(otherwise the godfathers of sweedish hockey today) and bamo, alex is on the phone from the locker room requesting a trade

I'm having really hard time to understand why you would choose Edler over Girardi. He's +/- is ****ing -22! He's offensive numbers aren't that great and considering Wings have 3 guys who can actually play defence, having a 4th one would make this team so much better. With Edler in the lineup, i just can't see that happening :shakehead.

Edler would likely be vying for the same kind of ice time / role as Kronwall, Smith, Kindl, RH forwards used on point on PP (Alfredsson)

Where as Girardi is a pretty simple guy. Solid outlet pass and doesn't need to be contributing offensively to be helpful to the team. Gives us a RH D, too, which I'm sure Babcock would appreciate. NYR would probably want way too much for him, though.

We don't know what Girardi wants from a contract standpoint either. I have been pretty high on Girardi for a while, but he will be 30 in April and he plays the type of game that doesn't always age gracefully. Also when they do shake up the pairings in New York he never looks nearly as good without McDonagh, so there are reasons to be a little bit trepidacious about going all out, he won't be cheap in terms of acquiring as a rental or what his likely next contract will be.

I do think him having a young family with a kid, might be looking to get out of New York though which is something probably a lot of people don't realize. They might be thinking schools and an easier environment than living in an Apartment while raising their young kid or kids in the future.

I agree that if the Wings would want Edler or Girardi right now, Rangers probably would want more than Canucks. That's why i hope Girardi won't sign with the Rangers and we get him :naughty:.

Depends on how different you think those packages are going to be. Edler's struggles to fit in with Torts have brought his value down. New York is still rumored to be looking for a 1st and top prospect, aka Vancouver wants another piece or two for 5 more years of service. Also because of Edler's contractual clauses he has some control on where he winds up which will hurt Vancouver if they are interested in moving him in terms of where they can direct the bidding war.

Would be quite awkward if the Wings said anything while Sedin is sitting across the dressing room.

who would you guys rather have girardi or edler?

Why not both?

Sign Girard 4 years $6,000,000

Elder For a combination of Kindl, Anderson, Ferraro, Pulkkinen, maybe Jurco, 2014 1st, 2015 3rd maybe a 2015 2nd

2014/2015 opening roster:

Nyquist - Zeus - Franzen
Weiss - datsyuk - Alfie
Tatar -Helm - Sheehan
Miller - Gldening - Abdelkader
Callahan, Anderson/Jurco

Kronwall - Ericsson
Elder - Girardi
Smith - Dekeyser
Lashoff - Marchenko

Howard
Mrazek

We would have approx. 2.5 million in cap space

I did the math based on capgeek, its not a perfect cap projection but allocated 4.5 million for tatar and dekeyser, included Edler @ 5 million and raises for Sheahan, Glendening,

We need a puck moving, offensive defenseman.

Alex Edler is 15th in relative corsi among all d-men 5v4.
He averages 3.14 points/60 mins 5v4 on an offensively inept Canucks team (24th goals per game, 26th power play goals).

He's already been more or less a 50 point d-man in the NHL. He just has the great misfortune of having to play for one of the most over-rated coaches in NHL history in John Tortorella. Hopefully Torts throws him under the bus which is a Torts trademark d-bag move and Edler demands a trade.

Dan Girardi? His career high point total is 31 points. He would definitely improve our lackluster defense however he doesn't fill the glaring need that Edler would fill.
