I didn't say it doesn't happen but could he have signed with the Stars anyways without them giving up a pick?

Who knows? The Stars were willing to pay a 4th round pick to increase their odds of signing the best UFA goalie on the market, and it worked.

I think negociating rights in Stone case are going to be even more valuable given the fact that 8th year is especially valuable to a 27 y old UFA... That big contract might be his last, an 8th year paid with big bucks is a big factor.

And even with that trade, Dallas could not have signed him to an 8-year deal. If a player is not on your reserve-list (or whatever it's called) at the deadline, the max you can offer him is 7 years, even if you acquire his rights just before July 1st, like Bishop and Bouwmeester.

You are right. Would have to be a sign and trade.

If Stone is on his way out, I wonder if there is a deal to be made with the Avs that could get the Sens their first rounder back, contingent on Stone signing a new deal.

Doubt it. Avs should take that top 5 pick and get a high level player on an ECL.

1st + prospect is fair. The issue is when you demand that the prospect be top 1-2 or adding a 3rd NHL ready player.

Well considering there is something called a CAP.. the other team may have to send back a player to make it work

John Tavares hitting UFA last year was the best thing to happen to the NHL, now that he's done it, other stars are starting to see what's out there instead of just signing a new deal like they ALWAYS did in the past.

But that's changed now and because of that we have the most exciting deadline and potentially free agency coming up in years

I think it’s more just that Melnyk is pathetic

I think Duchesne ends up in Dallas... If not, who are they going to play at #2C? Faksa? They need a C big time to replace Spezza.
Faksa is the 2c right now sadly, because Spezza is garbage. We're in dire need of a 2c. Duchene fits the bill too perfectly, that Nill will instead go after a Brassard or Johansson type

Both will be expecting bare minimum $7 Million per year.

I think in the end Stone ends up in Dallas.
Duchene signs a dumb contract with a very bad team.

If I were Duchene I'd take a small contract with a guaranteed contender for one season. That is, if he wants to win of course.

Yeah its SO easy to predict who will win the Cup 11 months before it happens. Just ask Hossa.

Only thing I am not sure with the NYI, is if they'll be willing to offer those massive signing bonus deals, especially with a possible lock-out coming.

Both Duchesne ans Stone will want that.

Yeah, and New York state also has one of the harshest tax regimes in the US. Comparing it to a tax haven like Texas makes it look even worse. Basically $10.1 in NYI gets you the same take home as $8.5M would in Dallas.

He’s definitely getting at least $8M on the open market. I’m guessing a team will be desperate and give him $9.5M. I could see the Habs giving him that kind of bread.

no chance, Habs should keep right on doing what they are doing, building with youth

I would rather have Stone than Duchene. Better twoway player and Duchene is having a career year after not having scored 60+points since 13/14.

This is way to far into the common sense realm...a truly necessary move by both teams. I suppose if Avs are gonna open the wallet for Rantanen then maybe it can't work for them, but man does Ottawa need that pick back!

You say "common sense," and everyone else hears "my own unrealistic fantasy."

At this point, I don't think Ottawa has anything to offer to get Colorado's 1st. Nevermind getting their own pick back.

I care not for either team(not a hater) but I just watched Stone play the other night...I'm sure it wasn't his best game ,but he was still really good.
I think the Sens will get something juicy in return!

People should remember, it is out there that one NHL team put 13 million on the table for Tavares. If JVR got 7m last off-season and Evander Kane got 7m, Stone is highly unlikely to get less than 9m in the open market. Depending on the bidders I can see it reaching over 10m. My guess for the major UFA's is this.

Karlson - 11.5 -12.5
Panarin - 10.5M - 11.5
Stone - 9.25 - 10.25
Duchene - 8.25 to 9.25
