Stone is going to get 9.5-10 millions x 8 y for sure, and will have many suitors at that price.
Agreed.
Fantastic player, there will be no shortage of interest both at the trade deadline as well as July 1 to sign him long term.
My bet is he ends up with a 7 year $70 million deal.

Yes. But I think the team that will acquire him at the deadline will go hard with the 8 years deal. If they can't, they'll trade his rights to another team that will do the same.

I feel he gets the 8 y deal.

Both will be expecting bare minimum $7 Million per year.

I think in the end Stone ends up in Dallas.
Duchene signs a dumb contract with a very bad team.

If I were Duchene I'd take a small contract with a guaranteed contender for one season. That is, if he wants to win of course.

I think Duchesne ends up in Dallas... If not, who are they going to play at #2C? Faksa? They need a C big time to replace Spezza.

Only thing I am not sure with the NYI, is if they'll be willing to offer those massive signing bonus deals, especially with a possible lock-out coming.

Both Duchesne ans Stone will want that.

Exactly what I said, see my next post.

So, are you saying the team that acquires him before the deadline will trade him away before the deadline if they can't sign him immediately?
I just can't see any way that's realistic at all....

Yeah not many teams will give up anything for rights to a UFA after the season if over. If they do their dumb.

John Tavares hitting UFA last year was the best thing to happen to the NHL, now that he's done it, other stars are starting to see what's out there instead of just signing a new deal like they ALWAYS did in the past.

But that's changed now and because of that we have the most exciting deadline and potentially free agency coming up in years

Disagree.

It's not like we have loads of unsigned stars. We have two teams with unsigned stars, both have specific reasons why. It's more of an isolated incident.

Doughty, Seguin, Wheeler, Hertl, Pacioretty, Gourde, Fleury, Henrique, Couture, McDonagh, and Ellis all signed extensions as UFAs with their teams after Tavares, none went to July 1st. We have yet to see a pattern of players not signing with their teams.

Stone is worth 65m over 7 years (9.286 cap)
Duchene is worth 58m over 7 years (8.286 cap)

Potentially but maybe he already had Dallas as his #1 pick anyways, if he was really going to test the market, why didn't he?

You get to know the guys, how you fit, and get a feel for it all. My favorite example of this is how Flyers fans were 100% sure they could sign Bobby Ryan as a UFA. Instead, he stayed in Ottawa. In hindsight, the Flyers are happy about that, but at the time everyone was positive Philly was #1 on Ryan's list. No team can really know that for sure (some rare exceptions), and it's worth paying up to get the leg up most of the time.
