Possibility of Martinez Trade?

Crazy, but this year with the cap the $400k difference between AMart and the other 2 could be the deciding factor.

It won't really matter we are 1 over on the roster having 24 and only 86K over the cap right now. As soon as one gets moved we are ok and it doesn't matter who.

I think he may seem devalued to you because we have one of the best and deepest defenses in the NHL.

He will flourish on a team that puts him in their top 4.
I would be shocked if he didn't.

Mitchell hasn't played hockey in over a year. Would you rather have Martinez there to back him up or Alex P Keaton? I saw enough of Ellerby last year, guy brings nothing to the table, no upside, no downside, just a bowl of vanilla ice cream with that famous former first rounder tag keeping him in the NHL.

Of course Martinez is the better player of the two, but let's keep in mind that we also have Schultz. And although Ellerby didn't show much last year, let's also keep in mind that he only played in 35 games on a new team with a new system.
 
I'd take Ellerby over Martinez. Cheaper, bigger, plays both sides of the ice, more physical, and didn't flounder as much as Martinez when given more responsibility.

I asked myself 5 or 6 times last year regarding Martinez did he flounder when he was getting more responsibility or was he injured

Fair enough, but when he gets called out by Sutter about needing to be able to handle more minutes and how he can't be beat the way he was in a game, I don't think injuries are an excuse.

Schultz and Ellerby have no upside. They're the old Dennis Green "They are who we thought they were". Martinez still has upside. And if we're gonna throw out excuses to make our arguments sound better then I'll present the sophomore slump and defensemen take longer to develop. IMO, trading Martinez now would be similar to trading Darryl Sydor. The Kings have a long, painful history of trading dmen who go on to either have long careers or help other teams win. Guys like Schultz and Ellerby aren't those types of players. Am I saying Amart should be in the top 6? No, simply saying I like having a 2 way guy there in case somebody goes down. Schultz and Ellerby are stay at homes, not even sure why Schultz was signed.
 
Man, some are quick to write off and forget how well a healthy Martinez played in his previous two seasons. Yeah, he was not very good in 2013, but does that wipe out his previous two seasons as a regular in the lineup? One could make a case if Muzzin or even Schultz be ahead of Martinez due to their size advantage, but Ellerby? No way. I think the only reason he's back is to have someone to waive and to assign to Manchester.

And King fans seem to just assume Muzzin is the real deal after a total of 56 NHL games and he faded badly as the season wore on and floundered in the playoffs. 17 Gp, no goals, 3 assists, minus 2, dude didn't set the world on fire.
 
The only reason both Ellerby and Schultz were signed was to have insurance in case Mitchell or another defenseman went down. Last season the Kings had to use their 7th and 8th options in the lineup due to injuries. Now they're better prepared if it comes down to that type of situation again. Given their low salary figures, it's fairly evident that those two are fighting to pin down a spot on the roster.

Martinez and Muzzin are competing for the #5-6 spot to determine who plays with Greene on the bottom pairing and who could also see some time on the PP. I'm more confident in Martinez's abilities than Muzzin's tools. Muzzin has the better shot and physical game, but he also lacks composure. Whereas Martinez is the better passer and smarter player, but can get physically intimidated at times.
 
I think the Kings go with Muzzin because next year Mitchell is a UFA, but keep Martinez around.

Muzzin can take Mitchell's spot next year and Martinez can slide back into the #5 spot alongside Greene (if re-signed).

As good as he was in 2012 he was equally as bad in 2013. He had no business being on the ice in the playoffs last year, even with as bad as Muzzin and Ellerby were, Martinez was worse, being owned by Scott Gomez was the final straw.

He will be given a chance to redeem himself in camp and the pre-season, but the coaches have short memories, and the last time we saw Martinez playing he looked like a fringe NHL'er.
 
The Kings will have to go with UFA route to replace Mitchell if he leaves after this season. There is no one in the system that projects to be a Mitchell type player, and certainly no one that will be ready next season.
 
Sutter loves size. Ellerby and Schultz have it. Sutter and co seem to think they can mold Ellerby into a consistent Dman. The Kings have wanted Schultz for a few years. Martinez played like white dog **** year. The Kings have their "puck moving" dmen in Doughty, Voynov and Muzzin. I think Martinez gets moved either in a trade or via waivers at the end of camp.

Martinez is older and smaller than Ellerby, and he has more upside? He's 26 years old!

Martinez had a rough first stint, played great when playing bottom pairing sheltered minutes with Greene, then struggled again when he was given more responsibility after injuries.

I'm not saying he's junk like some are assuming. I DO think people cling to a playoff performance too much, like wanting to keep Penner.

I just think there are better options in the organization. I think he's effective in a limited role, but given the uncertainty of defensive defensemen, I think having a more steady blueliner is more important.
