Player Discussion Pontus Holmberg

Turning what around? He's had a good 10 games in his career.

Doesn't matter. It's time to get rid of the guys that don't work. Robertson will probably clear waivers he is so bad.

His English is horrible, WTF? Did they stop teaching English in Sweden? Usually Swedish players have been very eloquent speakers. Sundin, Forsberg, Lidstrom, etc.

It does not sound like he knew English before arriving in Canada.

Since arriving from Sweden in 2022, he’s had to overcome a language barrier, but Holmberg has been working both on and off the ice. His English has improved thanks to classes, watching TV shows like The Office, and mimicking television dialogue.

Whatever it takes, the Leafs need a real third line center. It is the key to the difference between contenders and pretenders. Trade for Kadri -- now. Its the final link in the chain we need.

Wait until trade deadline. Most of their salaries for the year would be paid by then and there will be plenty of team selling

1. Kadri isn't a real third line C.
2. Calgary are currently in a playoff position, based on %. They aren't going to be sellers right now.
3. Calgary doesn't want to trade with us.
4. Kadri wasn't that good as with 3C usage with us, when he was with us.
5. Shanahan would never allow a trade for Kadri.
6. Kadri is a 1.26 P/60 5v5, Minten is 1.79 P/60 5v5.

He is just an anomaly, either he didn't care enough for the subject growing up, or he might suffer from some sort of learning disability.

You're right. We just need to sit tight and buy everyone amulets

Pontus Holmberg has started to score. What have you liked most about his game of late?

Berube: His strength, for me, is his strength on the puck. He is strong with pucks and hangs onto them. He gets in on the forecheck, wins those battles, and gets the puck (back). He has done that all year. He just hasn’t produced the goals. His being around the net more and scoring some goals around the net is a big key for him.

When I talk to him about playing with [Nylander and Tavares], it’s about getting in there, hanging onto pucks, getting it to these guys, and getting to the net. They are going to get it to the net eventually. That has to be his focus.

He has good details in his game, too, defensively… He is very coachable. A great kid; he’s a quiet kid, but he just wants to keep improving and getting better. He has a lot of upside, in my opinion.

He’s been really good lately. Someone in another thread attributed it to playing with Nylander, but when you watch the games that really has nothing to do with it. Better linemates help, but he has been more physical and aggressive with his play. He looks good right now. He’s drawn many penalties for us.

He is actually noticeable for good reasons for once. Yeah he looks good. Domi looks terrible in contrast.

Always been a fan of his and glad to see the cobwebs brushed away from his mind. Hopefully it continues. He's had two playoffs runs in the SHL and the AHL that hopefully can be replicated. Some players are like that and they need certain environments to thrive.

He's only 25. We might have another one our hands and that couldn't come at a better time.

I wanted to waive him, but he’s turned it around. Still don’t like him in the top 6, or anywhere close to it. But he can be serviceable and fill in if injuries arise.

Before Willy gave him 2 empty netters what was he doing ? Sometimes you just need to see the pucc go in but prior to that everyone or you guys wanted him out of the line up so it seems like he got confidence and playing his game where did the confidence come from?

Domi needs to exited. Wasted roster and cap space. He is useless out there, and takes selfish penalties, not the kind that actually prevent scoring chances. Such a low IQ player.
Correct Hes being clearly outplayed on both ends of the ice by Robertson id rather we kept him and got rid of domi

I thought Holmberg looked very involved last night. Played an excellent game.

His 4 goal offensive hot streak are heavily influenced by 2 empty net goals and an own goal that was awarded to him.

Funny that 2 of the guys we are looking to upgrade on are playing well.
Holmberg and Robertson.

I see what you’re saying, but still Holmberg doesn’t inspire much confidence in me riding shotgun with JT and Willy come game 1 of the playoffs. We clearly need more scoring in the playoffs, can he chip in? Especially in that role. You need someone else to score sometimes. If you’re in the top 6, you need to provide some scoring. Last playoffs he provided zippo. Same as Jarnkrok. You can’t have these guys putting up 0 points if you expect to go far.
