I'm actually a really big fan of Keller and it's a tough decision. I think at this point the cost control of Smith going forwards lines up better for the Habs. But I wouldn't be heavily opposed to this trade, Keller has some high end skill that can get overlooked by many because of where he plays.
agreed

don't think the yotes will trade him, but man would be fun to watch

No one knows whether Smith will be as good as Keller, however I would still just rather draft Smith in this option.

Making a move like this would be a sign the team wants to speed up the rebuild, even with him we still have lots of holes and likely aren't a playoff team.

37g, 86 points at the age of 24 on a team where the 2nd highest point getter had 58?

The 2nd and 3rd scorer both played only 60 games.

Schmaltz was on pace for 75 points and Maccelli 63 points.

I obviously did not watch a single Coyotes games last year. But i would take with a big grain of salt any numbers posted by their players in such a bizarre season for them. Keller is a good player but i'm not sure i'm ready to anoint him a ppg player. If he can be had for a bunch of B pieces fine but we're looking to move forward and not sideway and i think there's a very good chance smith becomes as good as Keller.

Just pick Smith.

It feels as though people think Montreal is or will be a much better team than they have been the last couple of seasons, despite there being no evidence to support that. That doesn't even get into the cap situation, which still isn't great.

Cooley > Keller?

Smith may well turn out to be a Keller. But that's far from assured.

I think there will be room for both. Hoffman comes off the books next summer and Armia's last year can be moved. Also, maybe Armia is part of the deal for Keller to equilibrate salaries.

Also, when's the last time an American wanted out? Petry was due to covid. Was it Rod Langway???
I disagree. I've done the calculations. The contracts cooking off the books in 2024 probably won't be enough for PLD + a star goalie in FA (Sorokin, etc). It'll be around 16 mil so like you said Armia will have to be shed just to get those two signings done. Then you have to think about all of the RFA's going forward from 2025-2027. That will be the bulk of the cap and habs will have to trade Gallagher and maybe Anderson to hit all of those contracts in instead of being like Chicago back in the day but without the cups. You also don't want to be like the leafs. A bit of cap flexibility is pretty much a necessity

No I get all that, for sure, he's a fine player.
But look at it mostly from a Habs management point of view,
You are clearly moving forward with a plan that looks something like 1C Suzuki, 2C Dach, and are trying to build and acquire pieces around that.

Why, would they ever trade our 5th ov pick AND MORE for that particular player and the fit it would have on our team, on top of costing us building assets we need.. for the build.

Nobody knows if Keller will keep doing 80 points either. It was his 7th NHL season. He's been up and down a lot. I took him in my pools a couple of time based on potential and i'Ve seen him play a lot in the past seasons. I was left sort of "wanting more" every time.

Well Hughes often talked about accelerating the build when he first came on, including by trading 1sts for young players. He already traded a 13th overall for Dach...

And, the poll is about 5th overall for Keller, not anymore pieces than that. And, Keller is clearly a piece that's part of the build. So it's one piece that's part of the build for another...

Will Smith likely isn't a good piece for another 2 years. So what you lose in years (say at least 5, because we don't know how good Smith will be as a rookie) you gain in certainty of the player. Keller has already put up 86 points. Smith, like Slaf, hasn't shown they can put up 20.

But, I actually don't have a dog in this race. I don't know Smith well enough. I was more interested in hearing the discussion. I'm more on the "get an elite star/generational player" train. So I'm for using good, but not generational, assets, like Matheson, Owen Beck, and Florida 1st to move up to get Michkov at 3. But even for that type of move I don't take my opinion seriously - just don't know enough about scouting and Mickov vs. Smith.

If you're hoping Smith will be the big star center, well he may be. But he's only listed as 5'11 and 3/4. Can we contend with Suzuki, Dach, and Dubois as our top centers? I think so. Though I'm always open to trying to upgrade. Just not sure Smith is the guy.

I dunno man, after seeing how he took on them Aliens and saved the Planet, I really question what as Keller done for anyone?

Keller would instantly become our best player and no you will never get someone like him for B pieces

Smith easily
Smith could become as good as Keller, but even if he does not, he can still be more valuable to the habs considering he is 7 years younger

Adding Keller, also means no Dubois, and the habs would be better with Smith + Dubois than with just Keller

That Keller contract is a steal for 5 more years. Doubt Smith will be as good and this should make Dubois want to sign here more.

We are not contending in those 5 years. By the time we might be able to content he'll need to be resigned. I'm puzzled so many people would be willing to make that trade. It makes no sense atm. It would have made sense couple of years ago when we traded for Drouin.
