I think it depends on if he can keep his impressive two way play up and if he starts to build a name around the league for doing so. That clip of him blocking a few shots in a row, and continuing even after he broke his hand, I think helped.

We'll see how the market is as we approach the TDL...

I think he can but it's not clear if Hughes wants to trade him.

Nor is it clear if he should. Right now the team still needs Savard and Matheson in my opinion. If things go well, they can both be traded next year.

Hughes confirmed the plan is to bring Hutson in at the end of his NHL season.

Most think he and Reinbacher will be in the top 6 next October. I say, giben that possibility, might as well trade Savard the moment a 1st is offered. Even if Hutson and Reinbacher end up not being ready, we'll still be fine on the blue line.

I do understand the vet leader angle though. But if not next year, the year after, Savard will be gone. Do we need to take the chance of passing on a 1st just for one more year of Savard? And the young guys need to play. Can't keep Xhekaj and Struble in Laval forever. One will need to play on the right side, and we'll need a spot for them. We can't have everything. We can't have Matheson and Savard's leadership, and spots in the top six for Guhle, Barron, Xhekaj, Struble, Reinbacher, and Hutson.

Solid, physical defensemen , who have a proven record of leadership are a rare commodity in the NHL and can serve as an important piece on any team who thinks that have a shot at a Cup. Think what Weber, Chariot and Edmunson supplied to the Canadiens in that recent all too improbable Cup run in 2021.

If he stays healthy, and some contending teams start making late additions to bolster their respective line-ups, it would not surprise me if one team reaches out to the Canadiens in an effort to 'keep up with the Jones'. A first round pick is not an improbable recovery for a player of Savard's talent and pedigree. Retention or otherwise.

I don't think we get a single first round pick at the TDL for any of the players that will be traded. Monahan and Anderson were the only candidates but with the way they're playing this season I'm pretty damn sure no team will be stupid enough to do it.

Well yes, he's as good as Chiarot. Who returned much more.

Honestly I’d rather have as high an end prospect as possible. If he got a first, it would be a later pick.

Savard isn't a candidate?

At 50% retained for this year and next, yes it's possible IMO. i mean we are talking about a pick most probably between 25 and 32

So far, this management team has gotten Newhook, Mesar, and Beck with picks in that range, plus Hutson, Engstrom, and Fowler right after. I'd like to add another dart in that range for Savard, who won't be here after next year.

Well yes, he's as good as Chiarot. Who returned much more.

I don't think so. I could wrong tho, I thought we'd be lucky to have a 3rd round pick for Chiarot.
There were almost no other RD's the year Chiarot was a pending UFA, so that really helped his value. Plus with all the injuries and Petry sucking, he jumped into the number 1 d role and played the best hockey of his career. Plus he had just played a key top 4 role in helping us go to the finals. It was a perfect storm.

Savard does have a stanley cup on his resume and is playing well. So we'll see...

He’s the vet I’d hang onto the longest. Looks like hockey on D when he’s on the ice. These kids still suck half the time however much long term potential. And there are 3-4 more coming up the ranks at the blue.

If he continues to be consistent, absolutely and we shouldn't have to retain a dime he's got a very cap friendly contract but as the previous poster mentioned I'd rather have a high end prospect.

Nah, teams are holding on to their firsts as hard as the Mole-son is holding onto a dime.lol

It seems every year is different. I don't remember if it was last year or the year before, but one recent year was, if I remember correctly, the year the most 1st rounders were traded at a trade deadline.

Sure, anything is possible, nobody knows until the time is upon us.The way teams operate is always an adventure and this season, as so many teams have yet to know their place down the line makes it even more unclear.

Don’t think any of our vets will fetch 1sts even with retention except for Anderson. Kovacevic might have had a chance but he’s been brutal. Monahan is basically a PP specialist right now. Savard has the best chance but a team really has to be desperate so I doubt it.
