Why fire a coach when you aren't sure who you are going to bring in ?

Well if you want to play a certain type of game ie offensive or defensive or rush team or puck possession team then you first need to put the coach in place who has a system that address your plan.

Then you know the types of players you need to play that system and who needs to go and stay and needs to be acquired.

Its the horse before the cart planning.

I do wish the team would either say "Randy's not getting fired" or just get it over with though.

The NHL needs a black monday or whatever the NFL calls its where pretty much all coaches who are getting canned get it the same day.

 this silence is driving me insane. i guess they want to keep the focus on the playoffs (i'm finding it odd that only ONE coach got fired (Trotz) - and all seriousness - he didn't get fired, he just didn't have his option picked up so basically, he's just a UFA)

I hear ya, but the fact that all they would say at the press conference is "Randy is a good coach", says it all I think

The need to hurry is not a driving force behind the timing....

I would say that a candidate has been identified and maybe talked to...

I really believe it is Trotz .....he would need some time to talk with his family as it is a big move.

Who ever we hire has to have the GM/President support and the players need to understand that it is a my way or the highway from now on....either play the system or you will be moved!

Allowing the players the right to freelance has proven to be a flawed system....Change in leadership and a clear understanding that you play the system or you do not play is required. Hitchcock is a prime example....it is his way or no way! Not a lot of difference in the D zone system employed but the players play it....and when they get possession the forwards are not all flying out of the zone but two forwards create speed within the D zone giving two options inside the zone and one forward fly the zone giving a deep option as a stretch pass. The major difference is the D man use skating and a good pass selection to non static players, with a tape to tape pass, and not a hard around the boards pass.

Well technically he isn't a UFA yet as all contracts run from July1st to June 30th (Players and Coaches) to correspond with NHL seasons.

So just because Nashville's season is over he isn't officially unemployed at the moment only informed that he will be. To the best of my knowledge.

Nashville could have a change of heart or plan and still re-sign Trotz to an extension if they wanted to, as he is still an employee.

Trotz would have to want to return.....

Interesting article http://www.edmontonjournal.com/spor...rld+Barry+Trotz+ready+next/9757690/story.html

 i was hoping for the same as well.

:biglaugh: yes! like Canadiens Sweep!
But in other news "RANDY CARLYLE FIRED!"

LOL.....who?

;) the leafs

wow. this article is interesting. Very. there are only 7 markets.

Winnipeg gave the :thumbu: to Maurice (good for him)
Trotz can't speak French [that i know of] and Julien's not getting fired :thumbd:
Melnyk gave the :thumbu: to MacLean saying he'll be back this season
Hartley plays Burke Hockey - he's not going anywhere :thumbu:
Eakins.... well I doubt they're going to fire their 4th coach in 4 years so he's save :thumbd:

that leaves :leafs: and :nucks

and interesting too that his son Nolan is a special needs child (I don't know what it is, the article just mentioned it) but you can really pimp the heck out Sick Kids here.

BetterCallSaul really sold me on Trotz, so i'm on the "sure, why not!" train.

I'm betting that the NHL basically said do everything during the 'dark days' between series 1-series 2. that's why no one got fired.

Barry Trotz son has Down syndrome.

I know Trotz and have spoke with him on a few occasions..not as a friend but as a person I met while been employee in hockey, he is an Alumni of the place that I worked at and has come back on several occasions to speak. He is a good person and a better coach....he is a person who is needed at this time to lead the way out of this abyss. He is a man of convict and high Character.....

I will leave you with one quote of his: .I will never apologize for doing what I feel was right. In life, I think a lot of people have done the right thing and have to pay a price for it. When you do it right, you don't have to apologize.

This was after he sat two of his top players in a playoff series that he was down two games to zero! They won the game that he sat the players by the way!

i never thought i could love barry trotz any more than i already did, but here we are... :yo:

honestly, if we over-look him as a candidate for HC, i will be upset.

again - I'll say it again:
i don't know why i have this thought, and it might not make sense - but here it is.

If we hire Trotz - we're probably stuck with Nonis for a while, unless when (not if) Nonis gets fired, whoever comes in loves Trotz too.

vs. if we get a newbie coach (ala Blashill or something) then you'd have to think that Shanny has an idea for a new GM who will not mind having him there.

(i mean you can argue either way - it's just this thing i've got in my head) we constantly fire the coach before the GM and then the GM comes in and then we're on a more hyper coach watch than normal

i don't know why, but i get the sense that shanny is delaying the firing of carlyle because, like you said daisy, is to bring in his own GM, who in turn will bring in his own coach (with shanny's approval of course).

if you think back to the press conference, when asked the question "Who will have final say on all the hockey decisions?" Nonis answered with an awkward laugh saying " i told you they will ask this question, didn't i tell ya!" (while looking directly at shanny and leiweke). after this awkwardness passed, nonis said that he has a boss and will report directly to shanahan.

and if i recall correctly, in an 1 on 1 interview, leiweke was asked even though nonis was dubbed as "his guy" cause of the long extension that he gave nonis, can shanahan make a change at GM without leiweke's consent? and leiweke said, that this is shanahan's team now, and if shanahan believes a change is needed at GM, he will trust shanahan's instinct and support him 100%.

also, if you recall the PC once again, shanahan didn't endorse Carlyle (except for saying he was a good coach) and at the same time didn't endorse Nonis either. all he said was... him and nonis would have to "work together" to improve this team.

when burke was hired, at his PC, he said right away that he loves the fact that the Leafs have Ron Wilson as HC and proved it sticking by him for 3+ years.

^this type of reigning endorsement was never given by shanahan or leiweke about carlyle or Nonis, which leads me to believe Shanahan will hire his own GM and coach.

the reason for all this silence (i believe) is because shanahan has a bigger plan up his sleeve and isn't just looking to axe carlyle. he probably wants to clean house, from top (management, scouts) to bottom (coaching staff). when masai ujiri came in, he was given permission to clean house. he did it and brought in his own guys. and colangelo was re-assigned immediately and eventually stepped down.

this is purely speculative on my part, but this silence by the leafs leads me to believe that there will be big changes, bigger changes than only firing carlyle.

The reason why Shanahan is delaying is because there is no urgency at this point.

I'd like to believe that, but I'm not optimistic.

Heard they couldn't reach Trotz right now anyway. Apparently he's night fishing with some buddies.

Not sure I'd be happy with them bringing in a guy who takes missing the Playoffs so lightly.

heck, the first thing out of Nonis's mouth "this is great for the Toronto Maple Leafs, I mean... really... this is really great, who can't look at this and see this is great."

No one who is confident needs to pump tires that hard. I said it day one, the Nonis Fire watch is on. It might be next week, it might be next month, it might be next year (i.e.: let the team do its thing, give Shanny more time to do exactly what he wants to do - ergo - let Nonis hoist himself on his own petard so to speak) but Nonis is not going to be here much longer. I would be shocked if he's here by the time of the Centennial. Everyone said - Nonis is not going to be content to be Greg Sherman (that is now the Sakic/Roy show down in Colorado). Burke was all "Oh yaaaaahh Feaster and I will be finnnnnneee." 96 days later, Feaster's on his keister.

I don't think anyone is getting fired - before the draft. Truthfully, if I were a betting girl, I'd say you'd probably not see anyone fired until July. Let the semblance of normalcy look like it's around and then the axe is lowered in August or something.

and I said this too. considering the buzz word du jour in LeafLand is "culture change" and accountability." what did we see happen not even 15 minutes before?

Any 1 on 1s with Lieweke: we need to see an attitude shift, we need to be accountable. I messed up, I thought I didn't need to work on the Leafs, I now put the pieces in place

Any 1 on 1s with Shanny: I can't make promises, I have to do work, I have to see how we can change the culture and leadership skills, I, I, I. me, me, me.

Any 1 on 1s with Nonis "well, we'll have to look at our scouting. Well, I'll just say that Carlyle's a good coach. Well, I wouldn't say game seven was a collapse. Well we still have a good team

Carlyle's presser: we'll I ASKED them to do the work, and I still don't know what happened, and I guess i'd be more decisive if I had to do it over (and then throws Jake Gardiner or Franson you choose), under the bus.

day 1, its clear that the management team is not on the same level.

also - if you watch the first 1 on 1 with Shanny (just him and media galore) he kept saying he'll need to bring in his guys in....eventually.

basically, change is a coming.

The reason why Shanahan is delaying is because there is no urgency at this point.

True. But I'm thinking as long as the raptors are in the playoffs the leafs are taking a little backseat and shanny is enjoying staying out of the spotlight for the time being, but once the raps are done and the media shift changes, Shanny will need to do something.
