i don't know why, but i get the sense that shanny is delaying the firing of carlyle because, like you said daisy, is to bring in his own GM, who in turn will bring in his own coach (with shanny's approval of course).
if you think back to the press conference, when asked the question "Who will have final say on all the hockey decisions?" Nonis answered with an awkward laugh saying " i told you they will ask this question, didn't i tell ya!" (while looking directly at shanny and leiweke). after this awkwardness passed, nonis said that he has a boss and will report directly to shanahan.
and if i recall correctly, in an 1 on 1 interview, leiweke was asked even though nonis was dubbed as "his guy" cause of the long extension that he gave nonis, can shanahan make a change at GM without leiweke's consent? and leiweke said, that this is shanahan's team now, and if shanahan believes a change is needed at GM, he will trust shanahan's instinct and support him 100%.
also, if you recall the PC once again, shanahan didn't endorse Carlyle (except for saying he was a good coach) and at the same time didn't endorse Nonis either. all he said was... him and nonis would have to "work together" to improve this team.
when burke was hired, at his PC, he said right away that he loves the fact that the Leafs have Ron Wilson as HC and proved it sticking by him for 3+ years.
^this type of reigning endorsement was never given by shanahan or leiweke about carlyle or Nonis, which leads me to believe Shanahan will hire his own GM and coach.
the reason for all this silence (i believe) is because shanahan has a bigger plan up his sleeve and isn't just looking to axe carlyle. he probably wants to clean house, from top (management, scouts) to bottom (coaching staff). when masai ujiri came in, he was given permission to clean house. he did it and brought in his own guys. and colangelo was re-assigned immediately and eventually stepped down.
this is purely speculative on my part, but this silence by the leafs leads me to believe that there will be big changes, bigger changes than only firing carlyle.
heck, the first thing out of Nonis's mouth "this is great for the Toronto Maple Leafs, I mean... really... this is really great, who can't look at this and see this is great."
No one who is confident needs to pump tires that hard. I said it day one, the Nonis Fire watch is on. It might be next week, it might be next month, it might be next year (i.e.: let the team do its thing, give Shanny more time to do exactly what he wants to do - ergo - let Nonis hoist himself on his own petard so to speak) but Nonis is not going to be here much longer. I would be
shocked if he's here by the time of the Centennial. Everyone said - Nonis is not going to be content to be Greg Sherman (that is now the Sakic/Roy show down in Colorado). Burke was all "Oh yaaaaahh Feaster and I will be finnnnnneee." 96 days later, Feaster's on his keister.
I don't think anyone is getting fired - before the draft. Truthfully, if I were a betting girl, I'd say you'd probably not see anyone fired until July. Let the semblance of normalcy look like it's around and then the axe is lowered in August or something.
and I said this too. considering the buzz word du jour in LeafLand is "culture change" and accountability." what did we see happen not even 15 minutes before?
Any 1 on 1s with Lieweke: we need to see an attitude shift, we need to be accountable. I messed up, I thought I didn't need to work on the Leafs, I now put the pieces in place
Any 1 on 1s with Shanny: I can't make promises, I have to do work, I have to see how we can change the culture and leadership skills, I, I, I. me, me, me.
Any 1 on 1s with Nonis "well, we'll have to look at our scouting. Well, I'll just say that Carlyle's a good coach. Well, I wouldn't say game seven was a collapse. Well we still have a good team
Carlyle's presser: we'll I ASKED them to do the work, and I still don't know what happened, and I guess i'd be more decisive if I had to do it over (and then throws Jake Gardiner or Franson you choose), under the bus.
day 1, its clear that the management team is not on the same level.
also - if you watch the first 1 on 1 with Shanny (just him and media galore) he kept saying he'll need to bring in his guys in....eventually.
basically, change is a coming.
