I get what you're saying and I think you may be right, but that's my reaction to the whole situation.

The best up and coming leader we have right now is Lindgren . I would also consider Tony or Trouba...but Lindgren checks a lot of boxes and he might be the least to have it bother his play . There is a case to be made for CK but he would have to man up more often IMO to be a real captain . Can't always go into a scrum scolding /lip service /face slap Marc Staal style/slight pushing .... but rather sometimes you go in swinging and gloves on the ice behind you like Chara and many others have and will do . Kreider just does not have that element in him . I know the purists will certainly disagree with me...and that is OK LOL.... EDIT...and even worse....sometimes you have to be in there ahead of the linesmen and refs !!!
 
The Rangers seem gun-shy about choosing another captain, and I totally understand why. It's been reported that McDonagh struggled with the weight of the captaincy, and I did think his play started to decline after he was named captain. Callahan was a lead-by-example captain, but not a vocal, "rally the troops" leader.

If I had to choose one, I think Mika. He seems like a laidback, likeable kind of a guy who wouldn't put pressure on himself if he wore the C. He doesn't have the serious demeanor of McD or Callahan which in this case is a good thing, I think having a captain who is approachable is important for this young team.
 
It’s gonna be Kreider. If it was gonna be Zib it already would be. He’d probably have gotten it if they couldn’t re-sign Kreider but now that he’s locked up he’ll get it and Zib will keep an A.

The Rangers not trading him has to be a sign, right? I mean, if freaking Goodrow returns a 1st rounder, and you do not trade Fast, you are planning to keep him long-term.

Right?
 
I don't see them stripping Staal of the A while he's under contract.

My hope is that they keep him.

They also didn't re-sign him. So there has to be some uncertainty as to whether they can find mutually agreeable terms. My guess is that Fast wants to stay, but also knows there's a decent chance that some team gets crazy and gives him like 4/$16 or something, which we wouldn't be able to afford.

Let's hope it works out.

Realistically, it should be Zibanejad, but I hope it's Fast. Feels like a player that could be Captain based on his usage and how important he is in the lockeroom.
