Here's a dark horse suggestion: Todd Nelson.

A little bit of a gamble, but the guy has consistently developed youth, gets effort out of his players, and puts up wins.

A little bit of an off the wall suggestion, I know.

I got the impression from yesterdays presser that Cassidy isn't as interim as we are lead to believe.

The only "impression" or sense I got from the presser is that DS is committed to drafting and developing. Other than that, I haven`t a clue what direction this team is heading in but I`ll wager this, if, at year`s end, Bergy/Z/Marchand, to a lesser degree Backes do their exit interviews and give him a thumbs up, I have to think DS would remove the interim tag

This may not be DS`s hand picked guy, but it`s a guy he`s worked with in the same organization for years now

I don't know who I want as a new coach but I hope it's somebody similar to Brad Stevens for the Celtics. Younger and realizes that the game is changing.

I will not argue this. But Sweeney needs to get on board to.Liles and Jimmy Hayes and signing Backes 6 yrs suggest he is not aware of the youth in the NHL taking over. A coach cannot do it without a smart G.M.

That's actually pretty good. He was wrong place, wrong time in Edmonton. Currently coaching Grand Rapids in the Detroit system.

Well done. Good suggestion.

Considering the chaotic state of the Oilers when he got them he actually did fairly well, the Oilers weren't good but were much better than they were with Eakins.

My prediction is that they will hire Leaman.

Forgive my Western Canadian ignorance here and my lack of NCAA familiarity. Can anyone give examples of current NHL head coaches who cut their teeth coaching college hockey?

A bit OT but listening to TSN Radio out of Montreal as I love to hear the panic when their team is struggling but they mentioned the Panthers will be very much in on CJ

Dave Hekstol, UND, come to mind. Haven't gone through the entire list, though. Jeff Blashill (U Western Michigan) and John Hynes (UMass Lowell and U. Of Wisconsin) also come from NCAA coaching background.

Blashill, post NCAA went on to coach Grand Rapids which I think is a huge plus

Hakstol directly from the NCAA and IMO, gets mixed results, hasn`t brought any more consistency to the Flyers than they`ve had recently. Now, is it a talent or coaching thing? Not sure

And wasn`t Hynes at the helm of WBS for many years after his NCAA ? And I`m not sure he was even a head coach in the NCAA? Thought he was an assistant

I`m not against NCAA coaches getting NHL jobs, I am however a believer there`s a lot of value paying dues/learning the pro game first via the AHL or as an NHL assistant

Any way we cut it, none of the 3 above has had such rousing success I`d be rushing out to hire an NCAA guy

Tony Granato did the reverse. Asst. Coach with Red Wings to HC U of Wisconsin Badgers.

Lots of NCAA/NHL connections.

I'm not against it either. I'm not sure there is a track record though. Maybe I'm wrong.

One of the benefits often cited for players choosing the CHL path is the schedule closely mimicking the NHL schedule and all the challenges that brings with it. Would be the same for coaches, or worse potentially. An enormous lifestyle adjustment on top of the other challenges. I would imagine a graduation to the AHL would be a more appropriate step, where the learning curve can be better absorbed for a college coach who's used to a short season and having the comfortable routine of an entire week to get his players ready for weekend battle. Tough enough for 19-22 year old athletes to make the adjustment, never mind middle aged codgers who are used to being asleep in their bed by 10.

Like Sweeney and Neely know Bruins hockey. :sarcasm:

I want this organization purged of any coach, scout, player, manager, or whatever that had anything to do with the franchise Pre 2006-2007.

No more retreads. No more old boys club.

I want David Quinn, but I guarantee you it'll be someone with Bruins roots.

Why do you think he is trying to draft and develop players? Can't put in place what you don't have until you have what you don't have to put in place.
