Pokemon Thread #25 - A new Tera

I have it too! One thing I miss from the originals is just the plain attack, now PP management is a much bigger part of the game. You can go into the menu and 'turn off' moves for each Pokemon in your team to conserve PP or let other moves grow. I'm finding myself relearning the range on some of the moves too.

I think there is another layer of strategy these games due to the lack of PP which is nice. Got to mix things up more and take some risks.

might be a stretch, but what are the differences between Gold/Silver/Crystal vs. HeartGold and Soulsilver? stopped playing the game series after gen II

The jump from Gameboy Color to the Nintendo DS is a massive one in terms of graphics and GUI so it'll probably a learning curve, but it makes life so much easier. Between gen 2 and the gen 4 remakes there isn't a whole lot of difference. Your first pokemon in your party will follow you like pikachu from pokemon yellow, there's a new event area next to the bug catching contest, a couple more mandatory cutscenes you'll have to go through like encountering Lugia/Ho-Oh, the gyms got a massive makeover, you can re-fight all of the gym leaders later on in the game. There's a bunch of smaller details that are different, but none that I would say are game breaking or something that you would notice unless you were really looking for them.

If you want a more in depth look than this is your best resource.

Ah, thanks! Crystal was my all-time favorite game. I was able to catch the three legendary beasts in one save. I don't think i'll ever accomplish that feat ever again..

Any other MD players wanna swap friend codes? And who did you get in the quiz results? I got Chikorita, which I've never really used in other games before. Was tempted to switch for Totodile but have stuck it out and it's growing on me.

I got Charmander

pretty lucky

Lol decided to jump back in and continue my Masuda Ferrothorn attempt. I had a Sawk jump me while I was sending a text and it was full odds shiny. I've hatched like 800 eggs.

Also does anyone have Rowlet? I've gotten like 20 Popplios from surprise trade but can't seem to get a Rowlet. edit: Nevermind

Or just horde Elixirs. But no you're right, I think overall I appreciate the challenge. I remember getting OP and blitzing through Red Rescue Team mashing A so it's definitely an improvement.

Aside from deselecting all the other moves, is there a way to assign a move to A now instead of it choosing for you? Or better yet a way to remap each move to a different button. I suppose they think it's quick enough holding ZL but I'm gonna dig again through the control options when I next play.

Do people in here link up for trades?

I just got online access, I have the fire starter and I’m looking for the others. I’d trade a level 1 fire starter for either of the other two

Am I missing something? Pokémon Shield is my first game I really played since Gen IV, and I remember there being so much to do in those games outside of the gym battles and champions. I remember there being a city with an arcade, the Pokémon contests, a huge shopping mall, a massive outdoor garden type place to hang out in, a whole underground area you could make a base and hunt for gems in, and so much more. In this game it feels like all there is to do is battle and catch Pokémon, and the cities feel completely empty. What’s the deal with that? Has it always been this way and I’m just remembering wrong or does this game have a severe lack of content?

Nah you are right, all the sideplots/quests are pretty much in the path of doing the gyms/champion. There is no Team Rocket dungeon puzzle to figure out. There is less physical space to explore. The only real explorable area is the Wild Area but you need online play to make the most of the raid feature. Hopefully their expansion pack will address this and things won't feel quite as linear and small. One of my main gripes with the game was that you couldn't turn your camera view except in the Wild Area and if I remember right they said we would have full camera control everywhere in the new expansion.

I feel the Wild Area was the saving grace of the game. The premise was amazing but it was too small in scope to actually be amazing. My hope is that it's a sign of what's to come. I would love for Pokemon to drastically change things up with the next new game, give the series some fresh new energy.

If you use Dracovish competitively you're a little bitch

My f***ing god I hate that thing and it's mindless garbage strategy. great job putting that garbage in game freak. I literally built a team in Showdown entirely around destroying that thing. And while I do, it hurts the rest of my team having to accommodate to the low thought bullshit.

oh and if you predict the obvious fishious rend and switch into something with water absorb half the time they just forfeit.

If anyone else is sick of dracovish and wants to use my team to f*** with it:

Is the lack of things to do in the cities in this game outside of the gyms exclusive to this game, or was it like this in B&W, X&Y, Sun and Moon as well?

I havent played Sword and Shield yet but I've played every other pokemon game numerous times and I can't say there was ever much to do in any city outside from leveling your shit up and beating the gyms. Ya there was the casino in older games but I'm pretty sure they ditched that entirely due to the optics of kids gambling in a game (which is funny considering that child gambling is half the profits video games make nowadays). I mean there's little shit here and there like the bug catching contest or safari zone but nothing that'll sidetrack you for more than a little bit.

Oh ya I forgot about contests in gen 3, but that's mainly because I personally never cared about doing those.

Usually any time consuming sidequests will be post game, like the Battle Frontier in Emerald or going back to Kanto in the Johto games.

I'm talking about things like in Diamond and Pearl for example, the Veilstone Game Corner, the Pokemon Contests, the big shopping mall, Amity Square, the Team Galactic headquarters, and that underground area you can build a secret base in. It doesn't seem there's really anything you can do in Sword and Shield in the cities besides beat the gym leaders. Every building I go in in any of the cities (got up to Circhester) has nothing in it except NPCs you can talk to. It just doesn't feel like there's anything on the side you can really do.

Yeah the new ones have the worst cities. There was never too much to do in any of them but in the older games the cities felt more alive. Sword and Shield the cities are just shells.

I almost completely forgot about this game. That makes me beyond sad, considering this is one of my favourite game series. Sword and Sheild just havent given me a reason to bother playing them again.

Especially with how many great games have come out so far this year.

Yeah it's worth skipping tbh!

For me alot is riding on the expansion pass. I like everything I have heard so far.

I don't regret getting the game or playing it by any means but for the biggest game franchise out there... it felt cheap.

So I booted up for the first time in a couple of months and apparently there's Mewtwo and maybe other Pokemon added? Any idea if there's a website that lets you know what Pokemon you can catch and what you can't? I know Raids tends to cycle through Gigantamax Pokemon but I don't know but raids themselves and stuff like Mewtwo. Am I still able to get a raid with Mewtwo and catch?
