Player Discussion Podkolzin (PbK) Thread Part 5

Good to see Podz coming back up I think he would fit well into a 3rd line role under Tochette
I think the reason these guys got recalled is that the Canucks are hardly done dealing......maybe something breaks even during the upcoming road-trip.

If they're potentially dealing guys like Boeser or Garland as rumored, then it's likely all they'll be getting back is picks since they'll likely be retaining salary on both. So they may need extra bodies.

I doubt the Canucks are looking for picks for either of those guys. I would think they are looking at 18-24 year old players who could thrive in a bigger role. IE players like Micheal Mcleod or Cal Foote

Calling these guys up just gives them a normal forward group, though, as they've lost Lockwood, Mikheyev, and Horvat since Jan 25th while only adding Beauvillier, and will likely want to carry 13 forwards regardless of trades since they're going out east for a week, including a back-to-back. This move doesn't really forecast anything.

Podz was the better player in Abby. Just recently people are saying he started using his shot more and is playing mistake free hockey. Podz is never going to be the player who lights up any league with his point totals. He is a Defensively sound forward who plays a heavy game and has a good shot.

Hoglander is putting up points but is still making puck management mistakes with the puck and supposedly hasnt gotten better in that department since he got sent down.
I hope so, because I don't want Pods traded. He has taken a step back ,but is the kind of player who might follow that with two steps forward. Hogs has his limitations. My feeling is they might do some package deal of players, Hogs or Rahtbone could be sweetners. The Canucks have so few real prospects I don't want to see a former 1st rounder traded unless they are a flop like Virtanen.

Podz has been electric at the AHL level (but still can't finish with any consistency). His playmaking, range and motor though, are undeniable.

It appears, that the Canucks (lack of) Player Development Group missed an opportunity to see if he could be an effective Centre; the position Podz former coach, HHOF Igor Larionov projected him to play in the NHL.

Discussed here:

It's not like " the Professor" has any special insight regarding the game of hockey.

If Pods could transition to centre, the Canucks could be set for years down the middle no matter what the draft might bring. If the Canucks could make another trade to pick up a lottery protected 1st Rd pick they could find themselves in a nice position to pick up two D Men and a Centre or Two C and D in a deep draft. That would probably mean a package deal involving Demko. But I see Pods like Petey and Hughes, no way you trade them. Get some good young players in the draft so Petey wants to resign.

Podkolzin's development has been one of the Canucks greatest mysteries this season. He looked well on his to being a top-six winger, when he had strong last 30 games a year ago and finished the season with 14 goals.

Then at the start of this season the bottom just dropped out of the bag, as he lost complete confidence and was healthy-scratched on more than one occasion. Then it was down to Abbotsford.

But obviously he put his time in the AHL to good use. Some of the credit has to go to Jeremy Colliton and the Abby Canucks coaching staff.

When Podkolzin drives the net like he did last night, he's almost unstoppable. Just no finish....but eventually his chances will start going in....Still a Grade A prospect for the Canucks.

Throughout the game, but particularly in the 3rd period against the Islanders tonight, Pods played very well. Both sides of the puck, he made a difference, and seemed to be rewarded with meaningful shifts.

What was even more impressive was that he was anticipating the game correctly..intercepting passes, and being at the right place at the right time.

Have to credit the staff in Abby for working with him.

He's looked strong in all 3 games since being called up, and is back to looking like the player who finished the season so strongly last season.

It's frustrating that things went so badly off the rails for him to start the season - and doesn't reflect well on Boudreau - but it's great news that he looks back on track.

There was something up when Allvin and co sent down Podz, Hoglander, and Aman to the AHL. They wanted to take them away from the poor habits the team was building under Boudreau. No coincidence that they came back rejuvenated after playing with Colliton and now are carrying that same play under Tocchett. Tocchett/Foote/Gonchar are high level players that treat practices as a learning session. Boudreau was more into having fun at practices and do mini scrums which is why players love him so much.

I'd basically pegged Aman as a younger version of Lammikko, with about as much offensive potential as a Craig Coxe.

But a couple of his moves and his goal in this game, have me thinking otherwise. He also showed some offensive flashes down in Abbotsford.

Aman might be one of the beneficiaries of Horvat leaving town.....getting more ice-time down the stretch. He certainly has the size and the wheels to be effective in a third-fourth line role.

Looking like a nice pickup from Allvin, after the Av's drafted Aman but decided not to sign him.

Anyone worried about this guy yet??

Should've picked Boldy like I said on draft day.
of course everyone is. 12 goal rookie campaign and some really impressive goals to this year. A horrible sophomore season.

I had Boldy 1 spot ahead so wasn't too disappointed and thought it was a solid pick but the gap right now is pretty large and Boldy would be nice.

Still think he will become a good player for us but damn do we need another top6 scorer and im not sure he's ever gonna be that

Pump the brakes on sending this kid to New Jersey.

He’s got the right attitude, he will persevere

it feels like he will top out as a 3rd line checker at the NHL, however, I recall thinking t he same thing when I thought Burrows will top out as a 3rd line checker, Ryan Kesler at best a number 3 centre. I hope to be dead wrong again.

Definitely a bit of a disappointment this season given how well he played down the stretch last year. Hopefully next year will be a bounceback.

Should have drafted Boldy.

There I said it, alot of us wanted Boldy at that position.

Work ethic, yes.

Attitude, I’m not so sure. Gets down on himself way too easily. Very fragile mentally. Which sucks because he clearly has the ability to be a solid 3rd line winger.
