Speculation: Caps Roster General Discussion (Coaching/FAs/Cap/Lines/etc) | 2024-25 Summer Edition

Ovie broke his leg and missed few weeks, to come back and score at the top of the world pace. The tone has been set. Protas will not miss 2 months for a little cut in his little footsie.

We will see him back G1. Maybe even RG82 to get some feel.

Time to get the camels out and take a sip of TJs fountain.

I might be in the wrong thread, but what is the Metro stop to get to the Caps practice facility?
Ballston-MU, Orange and SIlver lines. (The entrance to the station is actually a few blocks away from the structure the practice facility is on top of. But it's the only close station.)

This seems kinda pessimistic to me

Two weeks is playoffs, no? Essentially they probably won't be ready for the playoffs?

I'm not sure we are a better team than Montreal without our two best players.

I still don't get the Fever-Roy pairing.
I so desperately want to see Fehervary back with Carlson and Sandin with Roy. I will admit that Fehervary-Roy has been a little better lately, but a reminder:

Fehervary - Carlson - 60.8 xGF%
Sandin - Roy - 54.1% xGF
Sandin - Carlson - 53.4% xGF%
Fehervary - Roy - 48.9% xGF%

(Chychrun - TvR is fine - 50.7% xGF% which is better than any other Chychrun pairing)
(all xGF% via moneypuck)

On the flip side, I am glad to see McMichael - Dubois - Wilson reunited. It sucks to have Leonard down with Mango & Eller, but the top six from earlier in the year should be reunited once Protas is healthy.

@895 - I read that as they're progressing but that Carberry doesn't want to put a specific timeframe on it. I'm not hitting the panic button (yet).

So I assume that Fehervary-Roy also get the hardest assignments. If you're constantly getting d-zone draws against the other teams' top lines, ~49% xGF% isn't bad.

(But Fehervary-Carlson is my personal favorite.)

I don't know of a way to measure zone starts by pairing (Twabby?), but that's a fair point. However, none of the caps D are heavily sheltered except for Chychrun.

D - D zone start %
Fehervary - 57%
Roy - 56%
Sandin - 54%
TvR - 53%
Carlson - 48%
Chychrun - 42%

And with the way Carlson can transition the team from defense to offense, it doesn't scare me to have Fehervary - Carlson or Sandin - Roy facing tough defensive matchups. Maybe you use Fehervary - Roy in a similar vein as Chychrun - Carlson as a situational pairing, but I would much rather see the other pairs used the majority of the time.

And that could be what Carberry has in mind. It's entirely possible he is using these relatively meaningless games to get that pair some valuable minutes before they are defending in the last few minutes of a playoff game.

Thompson is definitely not one of their best players. He has to be for them to have any chance but since that signing the dropoff has been biblical. I think the goaltending is their biggest concern coming into the playoffs
